-35 f. currently. Another 4 degree drop and propane liquifies.

Supposed to be -11 for the high on Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. Had thought about smoking some dry-rubbed pork ribs in the propane smoker, but maybe not.

A bon fire with my older son present outdoors for Christmas Day, with maybe leg of lamb or cornish game hens with wild rice and brown rice dressing instead, perhaps with giblets or oysters in the dressing, and water chestnuts.

Approaching blizzard is going to be interesting 35+ mph winds and 24+ hr snowfall with around a foot. Then crashing temps and another day of wind. Thursday night to Saturday will have the roads closed I would guess.

Mailing the Christmas gifts early. Gassing up the snowblower. Go to town for the necessities .Reposition the cars for optimum snow drifting.

Moose Eater is in for the day. Wow! -37 F wind chill temperature? Friday is going to be nuts here, Highs around 5-7F with sustained 33 mph winds and gusting to 50 mph. Wind chill will be around -20 F all day!

Got myself to the store to get groceries, I was about to run out of some things.

Nope. I may have 2 pieces of equipment to pick up in town today, so both my wife's car and my truck are plugged in since a bit after 6:00 A.M. this morning. (*Transmission heat pad on my automatic transmission, oil pan heat pads on both vehicles, battery heat pads on both, and a freeze-plug heater on both).

-40 f. doesn't keep us home if there's stuff to do. I just make sure to roll the vehicles on the long straight stretch in the driveway a few times (back and forth, with all vehicles parked facing 'nose-out' in the Winter) before turning the sharp downhill turn onto the road, leaving our 230 ft. long driveway, as it saves boots on CV axles to 'pre-churn' the grease in the boots on the CV axles...

I haven't had a failed CV boot on a front axle on one of my rigs in close to a decade or more (maybe 15 years, even), due to this procedure. My wife's vehicle recently had one front axle replaced for a bad boot, but that boot came up from Az. and S. Cal. where the car had spent most of its life until I brought it up, and she parks in a tight lot at her clinic, where she has to do a number of (cold) 3-point turns to exit that place. I'd tell her to park in the street for a straight-ahead departure to benefit her CV boots, but she has to plug in during the cold months, and a cord from there wouldn't be good.

-50 f. or colder has kept us home at times. Though not always.

-60 f. = definitely staying home, unless someone is dying.

Thats great! You're geared up! Thanks for the tips! Yeah if your greese fails, thats going to be an issue. I may need to get some of those heat pads if it keeps getting cold like this for emergencies. I do outdoor work so basically take off time in the winter but get some things taken care of.

You can put your own heat pads on fairly easily with RTV silicone adhesive sealant.. The freeze-plug heaters take a bit more mechanical skill and effort.

The churning of the grease simply softens the consistency of the grease inside the boots, and protects the rubber on the boots from being quite so stiff and fragile on any turns when still very cold.

I rarely do a boot by itself or a remanned axle, as they're more trouble and/or money than they're worth. And new manufactured CV axles, whether OEM or cheaper after-market, run into a lot of expense, even if just labor/time..

If its too cold to drive comfortably, it's damned sure too cold to be turning wrenches.

Thank you for the tips! Yeah, you're experiencing a physical change. Everything turns hard and shatters at some temp. How cold is liquid CO2? I think thats about where you are. :smoke:
