I made a few mistakes building that lightbox, but it does the job. There is a stack of blutack and tape bogging up the gaps between it and the growbox. A more simple design would make for less leaks and fixes but I kinda got stuck to the idea I hjad in mind.
Also, if you are venting your light separately I would go with a positive pressure cab for your lightbox, along with the usual negative pressure grow box. This way any air leaks between the two will be from the lightbox to the growbox and then out your scrubber, rather than the opposite where their lady stink can bypass the scrubber. This is one mistake I made, will probably rectify it soon by flipping the fans over soon, especially if I start to smell them.
Thats cool but you said you still get some light leaks? Are you venting thru the pvc in the back? How do you have those setup? I had a crazy time trying to get my veg->flower vent light proof and finally ended up using 3-90degree black pvc elbows with a thick felt filter over each vent. Im not sure if all this was necessary now because some of the light I was seeing in my "dark" flower room was the afterglow from my cfls but at least Im confident now that no light is leaking from the veg chamber.
I just exhaust the whole cab, for heat and smell, at the same time so I dont run into the problem you speak of. Im sure you will fix the problem, the day you start smelling them like I did
No light leaks, just some minor air leaks, as in some air escapes the growbox through the lightbox and bypasses the scrubber. That said there is virtually no smell, once or twice I've had a hint of it but funny enough not lately, so I haven't done anything about fixing it. I could just inverting the fans though, but haven't got around to it because it seems to be working as is. Perhaps between grows, or if I get a ratchet type screwdriver.
The PVC elbows have extensions on them, and filter cloth. If I turn off all the lights at night and pull the cupbpoard out from the wall there is a tiny bit of lumination, insignificant though.
Some light leaks from the lightbox but only as far as the utility box, I've got the air going up, around the corner and over the ballast and adapters, timers and shit, muffled with some black filter cloth before it goes out the top. Again, when I turn off all the lights and wait for my eyes to adjust there is a very slight illumination. And yeah, the inlets are the PVC elbows in the back, I had light leaks up until I added the extensions to them. The filter cloth keeps things clean, but make sure there is no chance of the filter cloth going inside as it'll likely catch fire if it rests the lamp.
If I could do it again I'd have just one fan above the light at the front, invert it so it's the inlet and draws air from the utility box where the scrubber exits, cut the hole in the top on the back instead, and get away from having to cut so many tricky angles and joins for the woodpanels. But it works so I'm happy enough to roll with it as is, and if later I have odor concerns I'll just invert the fans, and replenish the carbon. I have a couple of boxes of activated stuff ready to go if needed.
Time for an update. The ladies are slowly adding weight, I cut off some more leaf. The grapefruit are really showing trich's on the budleaves now but my camera is too shitty to show it. Here's a pic of the canopy and some buds from the skush, I think it's about Day 32 but I'm too lazy to do the math.
It's looking really nice in there Getting close to the point where it's hard to resist taking a small tester isn't it?
I don't know Skush but grapefruit should really be speeding up the budding now - I just love the way she smells.
They've seemed to be racing each other, one of the skush was a tad bigger through veg but the others caught up a while back. They both smell great although the skush is a bit harsher, the grapefruit fruitier of course, but I love rubbing my fingers on the bud and smelling them. I don't really notice how much they've grown until I decide to give them a trim every week or so, hoping for them to pack on some weight over the ne4xt three to four weeks. I need to get a microscope or something to check the trichs. I'd love to take a bud sample but so far I've only cut branches I thought weren't worth keeping around.
Haven't updated for a while, here are a few pics of the four main buds and the canopy a few days back at about 45 days. Another couple of weeks to go;
Starting to run out of time for them to pile on any real weight, looks like I'm going to end up with one decent sized cola and about 6 or 7 small nuggets from each plant. That said it'll be the most bud I've had over the last four years so I am pretty happy regardless, and should keep me going through to my next harvest before winter. I had a little taster of each plant, dried out above my lightbox fan for a few days, delicious and fruity, pretty smooth even without the proper cure.
I wish I had vegged longer, the heat hasn't kicked in yet and the box is still running at 30c or under, and I have them sitting on a box just to keep them near the light. I don't have my soil dialed in, just potting soil, tap water (left uncapped a day or 2), and generic nutes through flower every 2nd watering. The plants have seemed healthy throughout the grow, no signs of deficiencies, but I never really got an explosive stretch of growth either. I also have doubts about my bulb. But all up, a good fun grow, skush and grapefruit will be giving me some fine bud to smoke, and I've pulled off a stealth grow in the smallest space I've ever tried, noone who has been in here has suspected a thing. Next will be a reveg of the four ladies and popping the last four skush beans. I'll post pics of the plants before I harvest them, and then of the yield.
Also, gotta say you might want to consider trimming a bit less. I think there is wasted light when there is gaps in the canopy. Maybe that's just how it grows?
