You'll need big buckets or short grow cycles. People do it all the time Scale note:18 gal tub.

D'oh! Forgot to mention, thats 21 weeks worth of roots. 5 veg and 17 flower. Obviously an 8 week, 12/12 from scratch plant would be smaller.

new to the 250w club here  i got some grapefuit and an auto-hybrid (ak47xlr2) growing in soil, finally im able to give them some bright hps sun. seriously, i have to wear sunglasses everytime i enter the room. :D it's a problem that i don't have a cab so the light spreads to a large area... but the walls are white.

it's definitely an improvement to 120w clf's. i'm keeping the light about 7 inches away from the top of the plants and have a fan blowing directly at them, i was thinking it maybe too close anyway... i suppose it will do good to move it a bit further away.

whats up ya'll just wanted to stop in and join the club.im running a 2x2x4 cab in my closet with an aro digital ballast and a phillips 250w mh that i had on one of my old reef tanks.also i use a panasonic whisper 265cfm fan hooked up to a diy carbon scubber that keeps my cabs temps cool and im putting together anima's unique and simple ebb & flow system with 5 two liters and a 14 gallon res.i will post some pics when im done building the system..

does anyone know when i should turn my 250hps on?
i have 7 lr2's that are at day 19, and their tops are about 14"-15" away from the 250 at the moment.
i was thinking of day 21-23, but not too sure if it will be too intense. and the plants are 3.5"-5" tall

You can turn them on at any time. For me 6" is about perfect to start flowering, that way they don't get too tall and overgrow your space. They will likely grow 1-3 times their current size by the end of flowering. The 250 won't be too intense for them, just make sure you water appropriately and have good airflow (watch your temps!).

Any of you have experience with 250 hps vs 400 hps? I've been running a 250 hps and I get a new bulb every 6 months or so. I've noticed that my buds are all sort of airy and stretchy. I grow 3-4 in a modular SCROG and the light is about 8-10 inches away. While they are Haze strains (from bagseed) I am wondering if I wouldn't have better luck with a 400...

Ya, man. Have grown under both types.

As others have noted, 250w is about right for 2ftx2ft cab, maybe a bit bigger. If you have 3-4 in a scrog, that suggests that your space is a bit bigger than 2x2 (or that you are growing a small scrog!)

Don't put a 400w lamp in a rig that is much smaller than 3ftx3ft or it will, most likely, get too hot. It's not a very efficient use of power either. If your rig is over this 3x3 (1metresq) size, think about moving up to 400w but only after...

...thinking about upgrading your reflector (if you have an entry level/budget reflector). IMO the adjust-a-shade reflectors with a deflector under the bulb would be perect for you to grow a SCROG under. With the deflector, you could bring the lamp a bit (not much) closer to your plants ; the adjust-a-shade will enable you to, adjust the reflector to get the most even possible spread of light under the lamp.

However...

why on earth are you growing from bag seed? Buy some seeds - if you are lucky you will get good plants from bagseed but normally, this is one to avoid. You can buy good seeds for not too much cash. Start your grow well - get good seeds or clones

growing a haze strain means you will get airy, stretchy buds because that's how they are - nonetheless, if they really are feathery and insubstantial, that suggests you haven't got sufficient light

Best wishes for your gro, dude :joint:

limey, thanks for the input...you are pretty much dead on. My space is exactly 2"x2" for flowering. I made modular SCROGs that allow me to flower strains, rotate, and harvest them. The flower room can handle four max, but what I lack in flowering space I am trying to make for is clone/veg space so I can have a constant supply of girls. My goal is to have 3-4 mothers of various straing so I can have a nice headstash with some variability to it. Short flowing Indicas, and heart racing Sativas...

My first few grows with bagseed were from a NY Haze strain, and yet again you hit the nail on the head...fluffy buds...great smoke, but I want something more substantial and perhaps a little more 'Indica'

I wanted to take a few test grows first to get everything dialed in and get my green thumb. Been growing a little less than a year now. I am now working with (Nirvana) Top44, Papaya, and Big Bud, and it's slowly pushing out the Haze in terms of preference. Unfortunately the T44s, were 4 of 4--MALES!!! :violin: So now I am going to grow out some Papayas.

I made my own cool tube and the 250 came with one of these reflectors, so I cobbled it all together. I am getting adequate cooling, but from what I am hearing 400 would be way too much for my space.

The good news is my last harvest was around 4.5 ozs from the 2x2 foot space last run, so I think I am getting better.

I think I'll stick with the 250 for a while and just try new genetics, as I get better at this--my results are improving...

Those are excellent results, my friend, and you should be proud.

2'x2' = 1/4 sq metre and given that the rule of thumb for a good grow is 500g per sq metre and you are growing 130g in that space, I don't think you are going to do alot better (unless you go for a proven very high yielding strain... and even then...)

So "props to you", as I understand they say in the States. keep up the good work!

peace :joint:
