sorry for sucking at updates guys, just had alot going on the last 2 months with life not to mention all this stuff.
update to catch you up:
in early sept i was tearing down my soil grow and trimming and cleaning up..lots of fun trimming and whatnot..here are some pics that i had laying around i think this was week 4 flower...cant find my later pics...(this is the same phenos that i used for my buckets.)
as far as my system's issues with leaking, i replaced the 4" corregated pvc (only pvc my home depot carrys) with 4" abs pipe (very rigid black sewer pipe). the pvc piping that i used had very little structural integrity and was sagging creating wells of water in my returns which would leak. after fixing the leaks in the system i fired it up and let it run again for a week. unfortunately i have 450ppm tap water to start with and i was having some issues getting clones to take to the system straight out of rooted rockwool so i decided to veg in beercups with soil for a few weeks and then transplant. i know this isnt recommended but this worked for me and most of the plants are very happy however it should be noted that i did loose a few im assuming from shock. when i transplanted i was careful with the roots and would soak them in water and i carefully rinse all the soil away from the roots as best i could.
during my thread abscence i also built out most of my new room (you can kinda see in the pics that i built a studded wall in front of my garage door) and insulated most of it for the upcoming summer months but atm i dont think ill be having room temp problems for this run so i did only what was necessary for sound security and got started asap with the grow.
the nutrient solution that i started with in my system was 450ppm tap water and 5ml GH micro 10ml GH bloom which i added and measured at 6.5ph and 900ppm. my thoughts were to use a slightly diluted lucas formula since i had such hard tap water. in the last 2 months i picked up an ro machine to mix with my tap water in an effort to lower my initial ppms pre nutes.
as you can see from my pics i have plants that are a few weeks older than others since things were alittle hectic getting them to take.
i was having water temp issues and ran at about 78 degrees for almost 3 weeks before breaking down and picking up a 1/4 hp water chiller (see below pic) which is keeping me at approx 68 degrees now. it should be noted that before the water chiller i started getting algae and had to wipe out all my buckets i also added a bit of 3% h2o2 to the system and it cleared up.
my algae was most likely due to my stupidity and water temps...i slacked and took wayyy too long to lightproof my res and buckets. after the algae issue was resolved most of the leaf twisting that i noticed started clearing up...but i have recently noticed some yellowing in the new growth areas.
as it stands i am 7 plants short of a full system and 6 or so are very small and underdeveloped...so to make more use of the lighting i threw in some soil potted plants in the center area of the system and adjusted my lighting accordingly...these were the mothers and aprox 3-4 weeks if veg older than the clones that are in the system.
current info on the grow:pics are have all been from day 6 flower
on 10/20 i flipped the lights for 24 hours of darkness and drained the system to refill with 50/50 ro water and tap water and i added nutes back as recommended on the gh 3part bottles instead of using the lucas formula this time as i think bigtokes has mentioned.
it should be noted that previously i didnt add the gh micro and let it circulate first before adding the gh bloom...in fact, in my infinite wisdom, i mixed the gh micro and gh bloom together in a milk jug with some water then after shaking it (which i have recently discoverd is a no no) then, i would pour the mix into the res a little at a time and measured ppm every 30 min or so.
since the flush and flip i have been running between 6.1 and 5.8 ph with 1200 ppm over the last week that i have been in bloom...for the most part other than the newest growth having a yellow hue everything is looking much better since the flush. after a few days the yellow hue seems to turn to green like the rest of the plant. i still have 7 or so "runts" which never developed much roots but i just couldnt wait any longer to flip since i am running out of room.
i am assuming that i killed or flushed out alot of my benificial bacteria...which is something i was trying to prevent but i just couldnt chance loosing all the plants. i am also thinking that i might need to upgrade my pump since alot of the root systems arent very big at this point...i have a hard time imagining that in 6 weeks they will have filled up my buckets like i have seen in other threads.
i def coulda documented this grow more methodically but circumstances prevented this...anyway ill be checking in and updating here on out at least each week...thanks in advance for your tips and all the previous compliments
oh guys i almost forgot to share something verrry important regarding security that i learned the hard way!!!
ok so remember how i wanted to use digital ballasts right...well my dream came true and i got to use them.....BUT it turns out that you could have a severe security hole if you have them anywhere near your cable infrastructure (10ft through a wall in my case).
in particular watch out for these ballasts...which may be exclusive to my hydro store but i hear that lumatek is made by the same chinese assembly line.
i wound up switching out for magnetic coil ballasts real quick when the cable man came to the door saying that he was picking up severe signal to noise ratio from my house after taking readings on the neighborhood tap while he was investigating the outtage in the neighborhood... when i say outtage i mean everyone in a .5 mile radius had no digital cable, phone, or internet until they narrowed it down to my house and shut me down.
i was able to get this resolved with the new ballasts then had the cable company come back and turn me on again.
i guess no electric bill savings for me...at least till i find some heavy duty fr sheilding methods and im positive that i will have no problems.
binary....thats interesting! i read arguments where folks said those dont put out enough interference to effect anything...i was once a cableguy too, i believe you!
That is a nice clean setup you've built, but I have to chastise you for one big no no. NEVER use silicone sealant or hot glue on a serious system. That is the signature of an amateur. Always use Uniseals with PVC and bulkheads for flex tubbing.
Also, are you saying that everyone in the hood had cable problems except you? http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/8600/cid/2009
Looking good i3inary!!!! I'm running a very similar setup feel free to check out my thread.
Glad you pointed that stuff out about the digital ballasts. I've got 2 and shortly after i plugged mine in i noticed that i couldn't connect to the internet. The next day a telephone tech stopped by my place and told me the problem was from inside my house. These things give off serious RF interference....needless to say mine have since been returned to the store
after reading the hygrozyme thread a few times i decided to give it a shot and try to make up any ground with my smaller plants. so 2 days ago i threw in 600ml of it in to do what it can....i have never used it before so i used half strength (i am considering another 600ml or so if i dont see any results in a few more days). will i need to add it everyweek even though i dont flush?
i also have liquid karma sitting here which i have also not used before (from what i read and hear it cant do any harm and is very mild)...i have hesitated to use it since i didnt want to throw any extra variables into my first run. ...and finally week 6 i was planning on using gh kool bloom.
..any thoughts on either of these in bio buckets?
i have been hearing phenomenal results from some guys in humbolt regarding using the house & garden products...i am really interested in trying the whole package with the bio buckets next run and was wondering if anyone tried them out?
oh, i won some of rez's sour diesel ibl on seedbay the other night...so i do believe that this will be my next run...i was amazed at what people had to say about that strain.
Could I suggest that being this is your first run to keep things simple. We all know the potential of the Bio Buckets but would it not be possible to screw things up with all these unknown additions. Each new product by itself maybe wonderful but in conjunction they maybe harmful. Just my 2 cents
