$229 for 800w LED.....how bad can it be?

Not really the right thread, but cob's are thermally limited, in development terms. It's such an energy dense package, that they run hot. We need to run cool to get best efficiency. We moved away from them, as passing 150lm/w was looking like a brick wall. Making 2umol/w a difficult goal. Meanwhile, individually packaged low power LEDs were moving towards 200lm/w and 2.5umol/w. This left the cobs in the compact lighting market. Things like flood lights. While the energy efficiency of little LEDs, with a good share of metal to dissipate their heat, moved ahead. Today, some of the biggest LED names we never heard of, are knocking out LEDs past 2.5umol/w for never heard them prices. That is where this thread has it's roots.

Be aware, that often we get named LEDs and a measured output that sounds good. However, not providing enough metal, means in 5 minuites time they won't measure the same. This is perfectly legal. As is measureing their output in a coldroom situation. This is why we like to look at the spread of light over an area, and the parts used. Without us focusing purely on the efficiency stated. It's just too easy to fake it.

If your running a 6 x 100w COB setup why not a 600w HPS ?
my 100w COBS were only good for 12"x12" sq imo
I know a place for off topic chatter, votes please

I need new LED setup, what are the best full spectrum LED’s available today? Last time I grew, few years ago, it was COB’s that were the best. CREE something or other, still have them but looking to upgrade.

The only high quality LED of interest to me lately is what Grandmaster is putting out. These are not cheap.
1500 Watts 240V. I wouldn't run it full tilt. 80% MAX.. I dont think there is anything better in quality

You like the new "mint white" chips? Or just it's brut strength?

Can't help but wonder if running any of these chipsets at just under 100% would not be good for
chip life etc.

They're all sold out. No name brand on them. Our best guess was they were ordered by someone and then cancelled so sold cheap on Amazon.
I bought a bunch of the same pcbs on alibaba. Build quality was regular but price fantastic for 474 diodes.
Pcb throws a lot of heat back onto the cannopy, i had most joy from their veg strips to be honest. But the 229 deal was fantastic...

Not been on Ebay for a couple of years , five minutes and a migraine later and i remember why i stopped.

But if you filter out the crap there seem to be some decent prices and quality if the chip is what it claims to be.
Phlizon are an established brand that look good on bare specs , anyone used them ?

Ive heard they run quite hot comparatively. Are you in the US? Id rec everytime HLG boards DIY. Board + sink is about 50$ each and its the easiest thing ever to setup. You can get your light spread right that way. Its a company which is 100% reliable. And it allows you to either go cheap or spendy, the diy approach means you can start out small and then expand.

We dont seem to get the range or low prices in the UK compared to the USA , possibly down to safety approval and being a much smaller market.
Researching to light a 4 by 4 now and there are many solutions and low winter temps are a big factor in the choice.
