2014 Wild & Wonderful Outdoor Adventure!

Greetings, ladies and gents! Welcome to my wild and wonderful outdoor adventure this year. Little late start on the grow journal, but better late than never. It's never to late to learn new things and to share what I have already learned from this wonderful community.

The land I'm growing on is some overgrown (no pun intended) farmland that is now hunting land that I know well. The two plots are at the bottom of a ravine (no water present, just vegetation) surrounded on both sides by steep slopes and heavy vegetation, fallen, trees, thorns, etc. Lots of wildlife out here, plenty of deer and snakes. The plots are actually along a deer path but I had chickenwire fencing covering the plants when they were young and now I have the area fenced off with 50lb pull fishing line.

I'm fortunate to have awesome natural soil, I'm talking this shit is the cat's meow. Due to this I'm not amending the soil with anything but a little lime. My holes are 3' in diameter and about 30-36" deep. Bigger holes = bigger plants. The seedlings (after germed using a germ machine (damp sponges cut in half with seeds in the middle inside a closed tupperware container floating inside a bigger container with water and a fish tank heater to keep the temp at 76 degrees) were started in a mix of 1/3 Ocean Forest and 2/3 Light Warrior Seed Starter. The seeds were germinated on 5/17 and put outside in their final holes on 5/30.

I have 9 plants going this year, 6 of which are KC33 and 3 of which are Green Poison from Sweet Seeds. All are fems.

My fertilizer of choice is Jack's Classic All Purpose 20-20-20 and Jack's Blossom Booster 10-30-20. I prefer to use fast-acting water soluble ferts because I can keep my native soil which doesn't dry out nearly as quick as an organic soil mix, which means much less watering and possibility for heat stress.

I might be forgetting some things that I should mention, but I'm in a hurry so if there's anything else you'd like to know just ask. If you have any suggestions I'll take any I can get because there are always many more things to learn.

Without further ado here are some pictures:

Seedlings when I brought them out on 5/30:

And if anyone could help me diagnose whatever the fuck is going on with this leaf I would greatly appreciate it. There are like these translucent spots on one of my Green Poisons that you can see here:

Here are some other recent pictures I've taken. These are from two days ago, and I'll take more tomorrow.

And here is a straggler. One of the Green Poisons. Not sure why, although I believe it may be due to him receiving less sunlight than the others, but if that is the case he should begin to catch up soon as the sun is now sinking lower in the sky as the days pass.

Hi there,
it sounds quite good, but sadly no pictures are visible.

Looking forward to see some KC33 outside.

Hmmmm. I wonder if someone can help me with this. Thus far I have just been uploading them to an album here on ICmag and from my album posting to the thread. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello!

Try to upload your image to the website "imgur". Then you copy the "bb code" you get and paste it in this "discussion".

I don't know if it will work but I think yes! :)

P.S.: Sorry if my english is bad but I'm Italian! :)

Yesterday I took a trip out to spray them with some Immunox. Gotta start preventing blight and other such diseases now before they hit.

While I was up there I took some updated pictures.

KC33 is rocking:)
The leaf damage in the up picture is made by some pest, the spots are sign of bites.

Looking good, not much veg time left, but they will get bigger very soon.

Yeah the pests have been rather annoying this year. I sprayed the plants a couple times with a Malathion concentrate from Spectracide but it didn't really do anything so I'm now exploring other insecticide options.

At my latitude I still have about 3 weeks of veg time left before the flowering hormones start to be released. Like you said the time of year is quickly approaching where they really take off, and I'm about to up the ante a little bit with the fertilizer.

Also they should still keep growing bigger for the first few weeks of flowering, especially the KC33 which loves to stretch, so I'm gonna be giving them 1/2 veg ferts and 1/2 flower ferts up until about early-mid August when I'll switch to just flowering fertilizer.

I'm also about to begin supercropping this week, so I'm expecting good things to come in the near future :plant grow:

The only thing I don't like about my grow this year is the plants, even though they get enough sunlight, they don't get as much as I would like. Unfortunately not everyone can have dozens of plants in the open backyard without worrying about flying pigs.

I see.

What concentration did you mix your Malathion? Did you use any wetting agents or just a straight mix?

I really hate the fact that the bottle smells like gasoline. I'm hoping to be talked out of using it, but I can't seem to shake these cucumber beetles with "traditional, safe" methods.

I believe an acquaintance of mine has been successful with the liquid "Sevin" spray (carbaryl active ingredient). He got the bottle that attaches directly onto a garden hose, and the white spray seems to leave some white residues on the leaves when dry. I asked if it smelled like gasoline or anything in particular, he said no. I trying to find more info on Sevin/carbaryl but not a whole lot of good info so far other than that it is a wide-spectrum insecticide that seems to work well.

Your leaf spots are caused by scales. Nasty little fuckers they'll cluster on your stems sucking the life out of your plants without you noticing. They are usually clustered up and down the stem really hard to see. If they're attacking the leaf already you probably have a bad infestation. They look like scales not bugs. Get a magnifying glass to help if you can't spot them. The divots on the leaves are the shape of their bodies. They are horrible will stunt your plants.

The Malathion I mixed a tablespoon of into a gallon of water. And yeah that shit just smells like some straight shit you should not be putting on plants.

As far as scales go, how would you go about getting rid of them?
