The NL i had in 08' was incredibly light green, had a sugary sweet musk, absolutely no OG or offputting skunk flavors whatsoever, was very sticky and still to this day was one of the best samples of nug i've ever had

other peoples descriptions of cereal and honey makes me think they have had similar experiences.

if anyone knows who makes a northern lights like this feel free to chime in, ill be on the hunt for it until i've found it

This guys been doin' NL work....

What do you remember? Please share! I wasn't smoking cannabis until '02 so I wasn't there for it.

I've grown northern lights several times, although it's unclear where the clone I got came from. The flavor was mild, slightly fruity with a lot of earth. The high was relaxing but not sedative, very good for stress relief and giggles.

I've got some NL Blvd seeds (NL5xNL5/NL2) that are going to be one of my next grows. Since those are all based on the seed bank's original stock, I'll have a better example for myself of the '89 NL high.

Good luck on the blvd, it looked very nice and if it is the one I am thinking of it should be a good representation.

Dr. Frankenseed,Burro Johnson thank for sharing

imho NL line has so many representations that it's rather hard to expect stable outcome for anyone who want to try NL.
i mean g3corn's experience is that it is relaxing but "not sedative", while Dr. Frankenseed says its "paralyzing". there are as many NL versions as breeders out there, i'd say for those with a good memory of what original NL was like its crucial to explain her traits, especially smoke-wise, just stating it's " 'xx year NL" says nothing.

here's Kalbhairav's thread about Genehtik NL
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=368785&page=15

his conclusion:
...
The initial samples were thick, heavy and with a prevailing acrid touch that hangs in the air. All the plants but two were similar in smoke. There’s not much to smell until the flower is broken up and then it’s predominantly a subtle musk that I associate with EU weed. Any trace of citrus/lemon is almost completely gone. All that’s left is a very hard hitting indica that isn’t very multi dimensional. Couch lock for me.. The two favourites were a little more tasty but with the same effect.

The best plants were ‘back right’ and ‘back left’ with a close third coming from front left (refer to pictures of all five plants). The pheno that looked fantastic (back center) turned out to be airy and middle of the road. So my favourite turned out to be the favourite in terms of structure, flower formation (tight, dense) and smoke. I might of kept my fave just to run again if I had a veg tent. Alas, not enough room right now..

As for this line of Northern Lights, there’s much better out there, for sure.. This was middling at best. Having said that I’m not at all disappointed I grew it. The experience has helped me get my head round the tiny tent and what I want to achieve there.

It's been mentioned plenty of times already, the most remarkable thing about the NL5 was how it maintained a high level of quality when grown in classical commercial hydroponic setups. Mother plants, clone room, veg room, flowering room, simple chemical hydroponic fertilizers, add in a skilled indoor cultivator and the plant would thrive. Good yield, very easy to clone. Very stable and repeatable growth pattern. I've smoked wet hydro NL5, harvested a week early, that was hung for 3 days that was better then the majority of what you see in modern dispensaries.

All the typical effects associated with cannabis, goofy thoughts, the munchies, the giggles, introspection, along with a relaxing mellow non-paranoid rush at the start. Great for bong hits. Good bag appeal, plenty of frost, sweet tasty smell, bright green, I would never consider it the best in any one quality but it was above average in all categories. When I first got into growing Northern Lights was the strain to have, it deserves all the praise it gets. I'd like to know how many people were able to pay off student loans, mortgages, buy new cars, and eventually buy the house they were growing in.

just stating it's " 'xx year NL" says nothing.
:

Please don't sound like an ignorant dick.

The 89 in the 89NL#5 is there to separate it from the American NL#5 cutting, being that the 89NL#5 was created by Nevil Schoenmakers. Yes you can find a devastating 89NL5, but just like every other strain you have to look for it.

14 pages and no one ever even mentioned what was so special about that '89 NL ? What the high was like, flavours, taste, etc. nowadays NL being suggested as a low odor stealth plant, did old version have the same low odor trait? in any case, what the smell was like?

I did Nirvana’s version from seed, not an old school 89’, but I really liked it. Easy grower and very little maintenance needed, fat nugs with a subtle mix of pine, fruit, and skunkiness. A bit of cheesiness even came out after a year or so of cure. I did get this for the low odor aspect, and it was indeed a good low odor stealth strain. The high was nice, obviously leaning towards stoney and indica, but not a complete couchlock don’t -want-to-do-anything effect. I would get hungry as heck from this one too. Not the loudest or most sexy strain, but I still really enjoyed this one and would run it again. Just good old nice herb that to me was really satisfying in its simplicity and quality. Might have some pictures I’ll try to dig up

cool Happy Times, thank you.
could you elaborate how she was smoke-wise, please? did you get that "very hard hitting indica that isn’t very multi dimension" as Kalbhairav said or yours was a different experience ?

I’d say that’s fairly in line with my experience, she’s wasnt as indica hard-hitting as the MOST sedative strains I’ve tried (like Cataract Kush from a local dispensary) but certainly leans that way. Decently balanced indica-leaning high

Kalbhairav NL is not the same as 89/NL#5. His NL was supposedly NL#1, which is more Afghani then the others.

What effect are you after?

I just saw today that Todd Mc got some original NL5 seeds from Seattle Greg and will be trying to reproduce this line once again.

Funny how some people (SG) were bitching like a little girls on NL#5 being only a cutting and not a seed when It came down to Nevil's NL#5 (from seed), now all of a sudden it's a seed line. LMAO
my

Rumor has it nevils era nl5 haze is also being reproduced.

Edit, it seems he plans to use the nl5 vs his haze to make the nl5 haze

On Sunday I put 4 NL Blvd seeds in a paper towel, and they're already starting to break through the soil! Plenty of vigor in these genetics. I'll have updates in my thread but I'll try to bring in some updates here from time-to-time. :joint:

My 1989 NL 5 that is currently being auctioned at the Seed Depot are F3s on my end, but it was obviously a worked line already. They were made from seed provided from the original stock of '89 NL 5 that were never released due to the breeder's incarceration. They cannot be called Sensi as they never made it to the that year's catalog.

They did not come from bodhi or maddfarmer, although the female clone they have was mother to my seed, but that clone was donated to them from a mutual friend we all share. I chose to take the seed, not the clone, for the specific purpose of hunting a male to preserve the seed. I still have the male and am planning F4 BX1 for regular release sometime in the next year.

I don't hang here, but I will pop in to check this thread. Please feel free to ask me any questions you like, other than who handed me the seeds because I am not allowed to share that.

And, here's some pics for you. If you're old enough to remember her, then you recognize her. I am very excited to have the opportunity to reintroduce this girl to the breeding pool, which is why I specifically put 15 in the auction packs, so that others can work with her and get her stable genetic back in the pool.

Hey there Melvan, I'm really glad I found this. Do you have any idea where I can find seeds from this lineage? Thanks :)
