mattkilla420, can't tell if your closet floor is square or oblong. You may get better light distribution if the hps lamp element is parallel with short dimension of your footprint.

Do your doors bleed light? Even the tiny cracks are enough to stress your plants to seed. If you need to light trap the doors, we might have a few ideas to help.

My closet is Square is 2.5x2.5 . What do you mean about the better light distribution?? didnt really understand that. Yea man I put panda paper on both doors at the beggining. There is still a very little light leaking between the doors so put up plastic over the outside of the doors and made a light trapped intake.. its pretty beginner but i think it will work.. I put a pic up tomorrow..
looks great id higher the 150 so its even light for all plants and put the cfls on the sides and flip it 2 12/12.but use your imagination its only as fun as you make it good luck

Yea i only have 1 CFL at the moment so my theory was to put the stronger HPS on the smaller plants to encourage them to catch up, while puttin the one cfl closer to bigger ones. My plan soon is to do exactly what u saay lift the HPS and have the 2 cfl on side. Check out my thread man and youll see. Flippin to 12/12 Tomorrow thats y i got my lightproofing done tonight... later guys!

Yep, sounds like you have the light leaks fixed.

If you had a 2' x 4' closet, light would distribute better with the hood parallel with the 2' wall. Light emits from the sides of the lamp, not the ends.

Since we're square it doesn't matter which way the hood's turned.

On a side note, 50 watts per sq foot is typical for indoor growing. You have ~30 before adding the CFLs. Might help if you level the canopy as best you can and lower the lamps as much as possible.

You have a good setup for a doughnut - a bare, vertical bulb hanging in the center and plants 360* around the bulb. Just thought I'd mention in case you ever consider vertical.

Great start, keep up the good work.

Thanks Bro. yea i been looking at more and more grows the longer i get into this hobby of ours and i saw a few of those doughnut grows. Man that does look ideal for my kind of grow. How muich does one of those setups run. Cheaper i would think bc all u need is a ballast the cord and the bulb correct? How does it cool. Is it like a vertical cool tube and u hook your fan to it or what. The ones i saw were bare but they were in larger rooms.

Anyways I dont wanna post these pics on this very well viewed thread but i will. Something i rigged up overnight since im making switch today maybe somebody can reccomend a better DIY one. Made it out of a solo cup which ones step one wrong. the inside is white which recflects light instead if killing it duh. Used two pieces of cardboard and made two slits in the cup one about 1/2 in from top and one 1/2 in from bottom. This is a shot with them open to show u all way thru.

and 3/4 CLOSED

Last night when lights were on in closet i turned off all lights in the room and no evident light leaked thru anything whatsoever. RIGHT ON!! heres a shot of whole thing!!

Yep. You could even convert the sun system hood to remote ballast by extending the lamp wires.

A cool tube isn't mandatory, it would still burn plants if they come in contact. (A chicken wire cylinder around the bulb keeps plants from getting too close.)

Most growers have a fan on the floor, pointed upward at the bulb. The floor fan just circulates the air and minimizes the hot spot at the bulb, it's not part of the exhaust system.

Closets make great grow setups but they're tougher to set up when it comes to venting and light trapping. Quite a few closet growers here, maybe they can give you some ideas. Best wishes.

Yes, you can use the original hood for the ballast housing.

I wouldn't use a lamp cord. I'd get a grounded extension cord from the dollar store. That way you can attach the ground from the ballast housing to something metal at or near the bulb. Grounded extension cables come in various lengths.

Be sure to use wire nuts for the wire connections. Wire nuts are threaded clockwise. Be sure to twist the wire ends clockwise, otherwise the nut will twist apart your new connection.

Disco is right on here, grounding is always a good idea as the voltage coming thru the cord on the bulb side of the ballast has been stepped up considerably . Alot of ceramic sockets have a 3rd threaded hole w/threaded metal gromet even if they only have 2 leads(white/black) coming off. Sometimes the hole is not threaded in which case just go get a small bolt/nut to use as yer connection point for ground.

Also if you can get yer hands on a pair of crimping pliers and a few inline crimps(16-18ga size is what I used but that will depend on your wire gauge) it makes for a cleaner look. Not that wire nuts dont work as my 150 was hooked up w/em forever till I redid some stuff a while ago. I have also been guilty of not grounding my lamp cord before in the past and it worked. Better safe than sorry...

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

All the best,

Read up an all the closet grows. I have my cab in the closet, but it was out in the open. Had no temp issues outside the closet, but once inside my temps get up to round 85 on a hot day. Had to mod my cab to run an active intake and exhaust, but I think I only need to make more passive intake. My intake is 8inches round, with 4x1.75 inch holes on the side.

Gonna throw some pics up today of my bagseed, aka blueberry, aka ak47. Just really don't know, but its veging so damn slow. I'm running an organic soil with lucas formula. What could be the cause of this?

My temps are between 82 to 85, RH is between 45 and 52. Ph is between 5.9 and 6. Should I be letting the ph fluctuate a bit more?

Sounds like you gonna be watering a lot. That, and the rockwool will let light in all over those precious roots. Imo, I'd use a method that works.

Btw I've been hella lazy, and haven't gotten any pics up yet, but still am wondering why my growth is so slow in veg? I'm sure the defoliation isn't the case, cause last grow it loved the defol.

Any ideas on how to do that to the sun system? I found where they did it to hps security light. would the process be the same?I think next grow Im going with the vertical doughnut setup. It looks awesome and i think it would be perfect. And i just happened to just get off the phone wit a guy i know whos got a 400w HPS Security flood type light brand new for $50. :yummy: I would have to make that one a remote ballast as well. Anyone know a thread where someone did a sun system remote ballast?
