1st grow: Nirvana NL, coco, Heads 6/9 formula. Continued...

Hello everybody,
Back with my update. 5 weeks and till vegging with 2x24W CFLs. I got really busy at my work so I can't do any mods to convert into vertical. I'm happy tho. I'm not sure what would be the proper grow rate but my girl is 7in tall and about 10in dia. Very dense. Seems like instead of stretching its developing new buds. Green and healthy looking. Coco is really easy. I was afraid of the hassle with mixing nutes and all but it turned out the opposite. So far I'm mixing 1 gal batch weekly and with H3ad's 6/9 formula it's a walk in the park. Here it is...

tennesseetoker: Soon I guess. I set the screen at 6-7in height so I'm thinking another inch or two... Chime in with suggestions...

Nice looking buds Disco, foxtail-y :) What is the strain?
j23: That plant is looking super healthy. Let me know if she smells during flower, I heard she wouldn't, and that might get me to buy some.
Keep rockin' those 150s y'all!

i have a fair amount of experience, ran a 1000mh before, a 400hps, a 250hps and a 150hps, i do realize intensity adds alot but nothing will negate the inverse sqaure law and that dance between light intensity n heat control is one we all play. heres my question, im wonderin about yeild potential for say 6 plants vegged a month, and then flowerd vertical circular style 3 plants to each 150 and if i could yeild an ounce a plant possibally? does the 150 just not have enough power for this and would 15 grams be more like it? 3 gallons of soil as the medium. im in the dark on what a 150hps can really do, ive only ran it twice n it wasnt vertical. ive seen a 150 yeild pull 140 grams in 70 days of autos and around 110 grams of reg strains in 9 weeks flower.

IwannatokeNbone: You'd have to veg and LST for more than a month. I've gotten nearly 1gm/watt with my 150, and probably could have pushed it a bit further to make use of every bit of space that vert provides, but it takes patience and time. :ying:

more with a 150

IwannatokeNbone:

vert
FIM and then stake.

1.0 gpw is very possible.

If you get real lazy..... As long as the plants are healthy, 28 grams per plant is almost a given.

A higher plant count can drastically reduce veg time. (See CatMans grows or DiscoBiscuits latest grow.) All depends on your states laws and your personal comfort level. Just my 0.2 :rasta:

yeah i pretty much never run horizontal, total waste of light, thx guys.

You've got a good plan. Your goal should be a breeze, especially considering you're an experienced grower. Dialed in, 4 zips plus per bulb should be easy with the right strains.

You won't need reflectivity as much as you would with a horizontal setup. Plant spacing can pretty much limit wasted light. With this in mind, don't make your footprint too small. You'll have more room for maintenance and air circulation will be better.

A 150 is good for 3" to a foot of penetration, depending on canopy density. A minimal fan that successfully removes the heat may not provide enough canopy circulation. The bigger footprint helps keep the canopy from jamming against the walls and limiting air flow.

If anybody else is considering vertical, it's a bit different in several aspects.

Don't trim lower nodes, trim the back of the plant.

Don't rotate plants, leave the untrimmed side facing the lamp, wire-to-wire. Even if you veg horizontally, you can still flower vertically. You may be surprised how much more plant matter you'll trim when growing vertical. But the results are better than rotating untrimmed plants.

And don't underestimate circulation. A fan on the bulb will assist the interior canopy while passive intakes assist the exterior. The backs of your plants might not have any buds but you still want air to circulate through.

Although I tend to agree with leaving plants positioned one way throughout flowering, I have to completely disagree with the advise you are giving about trimming flowering plants.

First off, the 150 bulb has a limited throw...which means that it is only going to be effective for so many inches vertically when the plant is X amount of inches away. There is a sweet spot, if you will.
You want the most productive part of the plant in this sweet spot.

The most productive part of any cannabis plant is at the top. Closer to top center, the bigger and most productive.
The lowest branches use lots of energy and put out very little mass.

It is always best, no matter what position of lighting, to trim the lowest third of the plant only. If you trim out branches from the back of the plant, you are only robbing yourself of good productive bud.
If you feel that light needs to be directly on the bud site to make it productive, then by all means tie the branch and place it where you want it. But don't chop it off.

Buds down low in the swarf area will never amount to much unless they were subjected to lots of light, and even then they are not that productive. Buds up higher, on the other hand, do not need to have direct light on them to put out hefty nugs.

I just happen to have a plant ready to chop that displays what I am talking about...
This C99xDC is at 9 wks today. This shot shows how it has been positioned around the vert 150 since day one. I have never rotated it. I only trimmed out the swarf at the bottom third of this 16" tall plant.

This is the back of the plant...the part that never sees direct lighting. Some healthy nugs back there, aye?

This is the bud site that is 180 deg away from the lamp...
Do you really want to chop out bud sites that would produce buds like this? Of course not. :)
You could leave the swarf on the bottom, and move the lamp down there..and end up with swarf.
