150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

Anyone have any thoughts on the Sun System 150? It looks great, and is inexpensive, but I've heard that the enclosed ballast can get heat up to unacceptable levels. I intend to ventilate well, but for any of those that have used this light, whatcha think?

i have that light in my set up right now and i couldn't be more happy with it just plug and play caint get much easier than that
with one fan on the bulb directly and maybe another over the top of the canopy and your temps should be fine

if your not much of the diy type i would defiantly get it

How would one of those HTG Supply 150w HPS Remote Ballast kits fare in a 15" w x 28" l x 31" h space? Would it generate too much heat? If not, what amount of ventilation would be needed?

exooo1, I have 2 of those each in a 17.5"x21x30ish space with the ballasts located elsewhere. The lights make a lot of heat for that small of an area, I ended up having to use cooltubes in addition to my cabinet ventilation. The nice thing about the HTG system is the bulbs are very narrow, I used the pyrex bakearound tubes & I can't image a normal size bulb with a bubble or oval shape would leave much room for air to flow inside the little tube, I think it's only about 2 1/2" inside or so. I used the overhead reflectors, but the rest of the fixtures went into the trash, still probably cheaper than most kits without fixtures though. I bought a couple little 4" 110 volt computer-style fans for the cooltubes & they do fine, I can put my hand right on the glass if I want. Still need additional air in & out of the chamber though, no way around that.

I think temps have a lot to do with factors outside the lights themselves. For example, adequate and ample ventilation (a proper centrifugal fan, pumping 100+ true cfm, as opposed to a small axial). Then there's ambient intake temps. I would expect a 150 to raise temps a good 5-10 degrees above ambient, depending upon the setup. Potentially double that with inadequate ventilation.

After the above, one does what one can (ie: getting a remote ballast, keeping wattage reasonable, etc). In the 150 range, I didn't think the ballast was much of an issue, but it seems like it might be, so going remote is probably a good choice for me.

Wow.. very cool. I've never seen that pyrex cooltube DIY. Looks good and cheap!
So that HTGSupply 150w HPS Kit + the cooltube would be my best bet for a grow in there?
Was planning on a couple daylight CFLs on the side too..

certainly would be a good option at least. I've only just put my first plants into flower so I'm no expert, but I have been pretty voracious about info while setting up my cabinet & think I made the right choices in lighting. One piece of info I came across has made me second guess the cool tubes is hearing how much light glass can cut, absorb or re-direct. I'm not sure what the physics is exactly but putting a bulb behind glass does result in a reduction of lumens. Some glass is better than others, not sure how the pyrex bakearound tubes perform light wise, but i'm betting the answer is in this thread somewhere! let me know if you find it. I used some 65watt cfls for my veg side - two chambers 17.5x18 footprint one bulb each. I ended up putting both bulbs in one chamber & it seemed to really give the plants a boost so I may get 2 more for the second chamber - (again, my first grow so I could have mistaken a natural acceleration in growth for a boost from the added bulb. The plants were about 2 weeks from sprouting when I added more light.) I feel like I'm getting up there in power usage though - 2x150 HPS, 4x65 CFLs, eco 4" exhaust fan, 2 mini cool tube fans & I'll probably put 2 more computer style fans in there to put a breeze on the flowering plants. If I had it to do over I might redesign to integrate the cooltubes into the exhaust eliminating a couple fans.

hey guys...I haven't been back in the growing game too long..since this May..my first harvest was very minimal to say the least...this time around I started with a clone of Flo and it is looking awesome so far...I want to put up a couple pics later on today...

btw, what is the average harvest you guys have with a 150wHPS?

Its been a while since ive posted in this thread but im back and harvest is on the horizon. This is my 3rd grow and seems like the best yet. I ran Blue Dream on my last grow and was pleased even tho I still battled slight temp issues(close to low 90's) This is the Madman OG (Abusive OG Kush x LA Confidential) week 6 , I plan to chop on week 8. :smoweed:

ive seen reports of yeilds anywhere from 2 oz up to 5
there are alot of other factors then just the light tho
but i think once you got everything working right you should easly see 4 oz
just dont set your hopes to high its a learning process eventually you'll get the yeilds you want

best of luck tho hopefully this run will be better then your last

Just finished the frame. What's a good material to use for the rest?

Great DIY job there DB :rasta: That's a frame for what? Soil? Hydro? How many plants under it? Chicken wire IMHO is the best for scrog. Easy to cut and form to shape. Sturdy, but flexible. What kind of clearance are you lookin at?
Stay safe n :smoweed:

heres a few (blurry webcam) pics I took tonight..this is supposedly Flo...its nice and frosty with many budsites but the only thing that is purple on it are some of the stems..I received the clone in Mid September..it rooted on the 24th of Sep. and I grew it under constant floro light until mid october...I think its almost 4 weeks into flowering..

day 42 flowering, the temp reading is wrong, i had my doors open for about a hour before that vid changing nutes and shit. My temps are STILL at 80-85, any advice on how to keep it cooler? im running that brown fan that 6 in ducket fan and a big pc fan to push are out the box in the roof.

i cut the four 4" holes today. it dropped the temps by 4 degrees. i am pretty satisfied with that. i have 10 (dc x alf) auto flower and 10 sour bubble ryder auto that i'll be testing this time. hopefully these babes will do better with the lower temps.
