exploziy gbb: My plant wasn't doing that good before I harvestsed. My own fault. But, I still harvested nearly 2 ounces using the same set up as in Bulenath's pix above. It's a highly productive and inexpensive grow technique!

150W CMH with HPS Ballast?

150W CMH with HPS Ballast?

I have a question for the 150 Club. After hearing so many great things about CMH bulbs I thought I might investigate them for my next grow. Now correct me if I am wrong, but from what I understand a 150 CMH Bulb will work with a 150 HPS magnetic ballast.

I have a 150 Regent security light from lowes. I started out using just the HPS for veg and flower until I had some cuttings to veg while I was flowering. In this instance I made a cheap temporary box and Vegged under daylight floros. The floros made the plants much bushier and shorter with many more bud sight compared to what the same genetics did under just HPS. So I was thinking if I could just use a CMH bulb with the security light I would have the best of both worlds and possibly a more potent smoke. Does anyone know if I could use a CMH Bulb with a 150W HPS security light? Thanks for the help!

i was wondering the same thing, i have a HPS growsystem lamp or something of that sort but was considering using a CMH bulb... take a look at my set up, the links in my signature.

Today was an exciting day for catman!

Ordered a vapor light 150w HPS!

Picked up a 31''Wx19''Dx31''H cabinet. I got some panda film to light tight and maybe I'll throw a veg chamber in there too.

Ordering a Can 705 filter to pair with a 120mm DC fan.

Good times ahead!

hey guys,

i'm new around here--been reading a lot for the passed few weeks and finally started my very first grow! i'll be growing in an stealthy NGB style cabinet -- a modified armoire from Target. i bought it for $40 off craigslist.. SCORE! the dimensions are 49"H x 41"W x 20"D. i'm currently trying to finish the inside & will eventually have a 32"H x 14"W x 18"D veg room, a 44"H x 23"W x 18"D flowering chamber, and a 12"H x 14"W x 18"D utility room.

i plan to use a 150w HPS vapor tight but right now i've just germinated some bagseeds and will soon put them under some 23watt 6500K CFLs.

after i get the hang of things a bit more i'll start a proper grow diary. just wanted to say thanks to all for the great wealth of information on this site.

cheers!

The toughest of all your problems will be completely light proofing each chamber from the next, while all in the same box. Unless you can crawl into the box and see for yourself, when you close the doors you have no way on knowing if there are any light leaks....It posses too much risk for a first timer! I would opt for a bigger light and just use that big cabinet to flower under a more-or-less-50-watts-per-square-foot design. Then build a seperate chamber to veg/clone/mother under 18/6.

Boondocks,
does that 200cfm muffin fan make a lot of noise?

I have a 200cm muffin fan and it's pretty loud. mine is 24 volts, 6" sq and like 5 blades

Don't Doubt the Cool Tube

Don't Doubt the Cool Tube

Hey all you 150-watters!

For those of you out there that are, for some odd reason, still doubting the effectiveness of a cool tube for the 150W, I bring you some test results. I update my cabinet thread every week so I decided to see just how well my cool tube worked for 7 days.

I have my cool tube hooked up to one side of a Dayton-style blower.

I rotated my plant so that a bud was positioned within 1/4 of an inch, if not touching the tube, for an entire week:

I am here to tell you, with confidence, that a proper cool tube on the 150W has allowed the bud to stay there for an entire week without any "adverse affects":

Cool tube + 150W = Happy Dance

Just a little bit of reinforcement for the cool tube.

The cool tube is nice. I put a piece of very thin glass on my 150w HPS hood and I was able to get the plants very close to the glass, no heat at all. but about mid grow I took of the glass and the extra light sent my girls into orbit.
I use a couple of CFLs which I get very close to the plants, but I keep the 150w HPS about 8-10 inches away. That 10%-15% light loss didn't make up for the closeness. I need all the light I can get.

Nice work on the cool tube Quazi!

Many people have been saying that a cool tube with the 150w isn't worth it unless you need the vertical height and need to control the temperatures. I see you can get your plants much closer, but how did it effect your temperature?

People speak of the 10% or so light loss from the glass, but I wonder what happens to that 10% with the inverse square law because you are closer, less light is diminished.

I'm going with the trial and error that people have done because their yield was higher w/o a cool tube.

Catman is seeing funny colors right now and there can only be one reason for this! My 150w HPS came in the mail today! :headbange:

Thanks to Quazi's guide (thanks again!) it was a piece of cake. I'm going to keep the ballast in the current enclosure.

I gave the bulb about 5 minutes to warm up and it just didn't get as orange as I've seen on 400/600 watts, but my room filled with shadows. The filament inside the bulb was still alternating between the light orange and violet. Will it keep oscillating like that or is it suppose to finalize on a certain spectrum?

I'm going to mount it centered depth wise and perpendicular to the width like Pipedream says so.

Unmediated catman analyzes everything! We'll change that soon enough =]
