Ever perform major surgery on a root system?

Since I'm sending my current clone mother throught the flower room soon in order to replace her with a more mature plant, some preparations had to be made. She has been in this planter for several months now and the stretch would certainly rootbound her. A major surgical operation was in order.

This is the before shot

She is removed from her plastic bag in the crate

Roots look just OK, the soil is currently very dry for this procedure. The growth spurt common after fresh watering of a dry mdium will help her blow right through any shock issues.

Stab that knife in and saw away!. I sharpened it nicely with a wetstone before doing this, so it lid very easily through

Just an inch off from all sides, including the bottom

Put a new bag in the crate, wait for soil to poke holes. Dont forget!

Slip trimmed off plant into the new bag with a couple inches of new soil on the bottom. No problem fitting her but you may have to hold her in place as the new soil goes in to keep her centered

Pack the soil in and around evenly, going around to all sides and gently packing it down till it's full

Water her thoroughly inplace with a standard strength fertilizer solution, heavy on the superthrive for shock reduction. This is a real use for it!

She looks pretty good for having just undergone major surgery. we'll see if it lasts

72 hours and new growth has clearly begun and quickly. New soil is very sweet

I did that to a few of my Moms

I Bonsi them and once and awhile you have to repot them but don't want to use a larger pot.
They don't seem to mind all that much.
I also wait untill the Medium is dry and water after the transplant.

Yep!

Yep!

At the point where I'd decided to change from soil to hydro (spilled alaskan fish fert all over myself, but that's another story), I did ,in fact, do a MAJOR root surgery. I was growing Lifesaver...first big name genetics, only female in the pack.... and determined not to lose it. So I sprayed as much dirt off the roots as I could and blindly jammed it into a bubbler... two days later...slime....stink....rot....ewwwwwwwwwwww! So...feeling (not so) bulletproof I pulled out a freshly sharpened butcher knife and shaved all but the tap root off in a desperate attempt to save the plant from myself....amazingly it worked! She turned into a tree in short order....filled the bubble bucket with healthy white roots...no infection....and everyone had pie! LOL

It is incredible the kind of abuse these plants can take from us and still treat us so KINDly!

Thank Jah for putting cannabis in the weed family, eh?

You would think the same fools that go out a spray sticker weeds on th lawn every weekend would realize that pot will never, ever, go away until the cockroaches do. Logical connections are not the strong suit of the Suits.

Another great lesson from the professor. Good stuff, Cap.

123P,
Wow! That's cool. What a resilient plant.
