The adventures of Dabman & Rosin in the art of the squish

A buddy got me motivated (TY lappy) to build a press and learn the art of rosin making. Getting heated plates made for the application but I stared fucked around with a 20 lbs press using the plates by putting them in the oven. Find it more satisfying than oil so far.

1 Squish, 5 gram puck, .5 gram of oil, less than I expected, got .7 total after second squish, puck still feels oily. Other run was about .8 on a 4 gram puck. Several squishes.

flarfy nugs stem removed and hand pressed into a puck

Nice dude, or should I say dabman? Welcome to the squish squad. I converted about a year ago and it's been fun to watch things evolve. To think of how it started with hair irons and see where it's at now... pretty pretty pretty good. You used a 20lb press?

Ive been converted for a year, and still use and love a hair iron, easily produces personal amounts, and with a clamp, quite efficiently.

Honestly, I had to put the hair iron away after I repressed the pucks in the 20 ton. Sooo much more came out, I figured I was wasting too much.

Thermocouples came Saturday, the heater cartridges shipped today. Hopefully I will be able to get the plates back to the metal shop for holes to be drilled and we can be pressing properly by this weekend.

Well i was rocking a slightly different style, and this is a thread here on started by arthritis sucks, about it. However I switched to a more pinpoint clamp, and my hair iron has yet to break so i haven't had to attach them to each other. The clamp is a vice grip 11SP, and i am using a lilique professional hair iron, which is very nice as it goes lower than most, so it has a nice range of useable temperature.

yeah its not easy to get it all out with a small clamp and hair press i agree, but if you dial it in and are getting yields as high as you get with bho, you can be fairly sure you are getting very close to all of it. I can only press about 1-1.5 grams at a time efficiently, but i only need to do that 3 or 4 times a day.

That's cool, and hey props for coming up with the clamp idea and more importantly sharing it with the rest of us. It worked well but the hair iron was not efficient for my purposes as I didn't care to press out small amounts 4-5x a day and scrape it up off multiple sheets of parchment. That got old pretty fast. I agree with you on the effectiveness and ease of use, though. But if you're trying to press a sizable amount of material efficiently a hair iron ain't gonna cut it.

I had a similar experience, Lapides. The added pressure and better temperature control made a big difference. The next step up is going to be interesting.

Have you tried using a larger press or has it only been hair irons? I think you might be surprised what that added pressure can produce, even if you don't elect to press larger amounts. The hair iron works, sure and it's super simple which makes it accessible which is where it really shines, IMO. But it hasn't been as effective or efficient as a larger press, in my experience. It's still not perfect - the bigger press, I mean, but things are at least trending in the right direction.

Heater cartridges came in yesterday and I took the plates back to the metal shop. Dude said by the end of the week, but he called me this AM to confirm the size of a hole, so MAYYYYBE getting them back today.

Pretty excited.

I already want to upgrade my bottle jack to a pneumatically jacked one.

i prefer hydraulic because i can ease into presses which helps me avoid blow outs when i'm packed to the gills or pressing fresh material. it allows a bit more finesse than pneumatic, which is all or nothing---it punches or stomps rather than squishing.

pneumatic will work fine especially if you're pressing mostly hash but it seems limiting to me.

So the finished plates came in this afternoon! I am very pleased with the results.
Got stuff wired up and squished a quick little ball of malawix(nl5haze) and it works wonderfully. I couldn't be more pleased.

Nice set screws to keep the heater cartridges snug. The diameter of the carts is 0.23622 and he made the hole .25, so it's already good, but the set screws add a nice touch

Steady temps. I can move the bottom plate to square it up, im not THAT sloppy :)

I dont know how to make this one correctly oriented

nice work lappy!

is the heat adjustible?

how much did the plates and electronics set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah the heat is totally adjustable via PID, like an enail setup. Instead of a coil, I'm using cartridges. 300 watts per plate, heats up to 180F in about 3 minutes or so and stays very steady.
