G`day OO

Interesting fact .
In Spain they not only want to know your Surname [fathers name ], they want mothers maiden name as well for official documents .
Acknowledgement of the mothers line ?

Thanks for sharin

True, forgot about that ;) . There are even countries where only the mother's name counts...
Besides, males are often bigger and have more muscles which in case of a racing horse may be what's needed and what determines a 'good' trait.

Never mind; if you think you have to select females go for it; I´ll keep going for males.

May be, if one day you go to one of this canna-trade shows ( Viena is not far from you), and you see Luc from Paradise Seeds, you can ask him about the White Widow male he bought in the underground scene of Ámsterdam and you can ask him if this male improves the offspring, and what are his toughts about your post above.

I don´t know about the rest of Spain but we had a matriarcal society around here, till Christianity started and all that.

ROFLMAO! No, I'm absolutely not saying that the males don't matter! I was referring to post 76 and am saying that the males likely don't contribute more or different things than females. That means, in most cases BOTH MALE AND FEMALE ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT (female cannabis in terms of potency likely a trifle more).
Maybe Luc's WW simply had more dominant genes for the traits he was after?

For what it’s worth, it’s been said that there isn’t any crossover/recombination with the Y chromosome, but it does occur with the X. Wouldn’t this mean that the information on the Y chromosome would remain constant throughout the pedigree? I’ve also heard it said that there are not any valuable traits (for cannabis) linked to sex chromosomes, but what if there is?

On another note, all mitochondrial DNA comes from the mother side.

What's wrong with you Harry? Got no sleep cause the kiddos were crying all night long? Or do you have difficulties reading posts longer than 4 lines? I really-really don't get you... no matter what I say, you're against it. :nono:
Go and self your males for what it's worth...

I've come from there just lately... got my PhD in natural sciences, more precisely pharmaceutical biology, and a post-doc after that. Those thing got to be good at least for something, like talking people into the ground with logic :D (cause sure as hell, they don't help getting rich and famous).

Clarke's criteria for male selection is counterintuitive, yet makes a bit of sense.

He surmised that historical human intervention in cannabis breeding involves culling of males that show early vigor i.e. fast growing, tall, and shows sex early.

In nature, these males win; but according to Clarke, left to nature, cannabis plants would more readily revert to their hemp-for-fibre form, and not for THC production.

So if there was a list of the top 5 things to help select a male what would they be?

Some things im going to look for.

No early flowering males

Significant stem aroma

Healthy vigor and flowering structure

Significant trichome production?

What do u guys think? Im gonna start reducing some in the next few weeks.

Not sure if its worth it but maybe smoke test the males.

Goal is to try and reduce the males to 2 of them per strain, then cross them to the favorite female, and run 20 or so offspring of each different male cross, to see which male made better offspring?

Does this sound like a decent plan to select a male?

I have a noob question ... slightly off topic , but I cant start threads yet (not enough posts) I am new to breeding ,but have made a few crosses and have grown them out with success. I am currently flowering a male from a cross I made (Flo x Ox). This is my fourth time flowering a male. I flower males seperate, collect the pollen, then hand Pollinate the ladys during another cycle. My question is how long do you normally flower your boys for ? The last time I flowered em for around 4 weeks then collected the pollen ,didnt get a ton , but it was viable. I am aware some peeps just put a boy in with girls and let nature do its thing, the timing just hasnt been right for me to do it that way.

Doesn't matter. Pollen from the first flower to open is the same as pollen from the last one standing (rather hanging from an axil).

I understand that u wont know if the male is a good choice until u test the offspring. But that shouldn't take away from the value of selecting for traits that u want to see in the next generation. If it doesn't work so be it, back to the drawing board. But if the cross does work at least ur that much closer to hopefully some of those traits passing on. Does that hold water?
