Light Rails VS. Stationary Lights

Greetings all:

I was wondering what thoughts and experiences people have had with Light Rails as compared to Stationary Lights.

Do you have experience using both? How do you think it compared?

Does it make a big difference to your plants?

Was one better? And why?

If you had a linear room [ long and narrow] would you get 2 lights? [ which would provide enough coverage] or one higher power light on a rail?

Etc..

Thanks for reading and especially posting.

interesting

interesting

Why do you think that is?

I am sometimes concerned since the light would be about 6 feet away every 2 minutes [approx]

I use a light mover with 1000W cool tubes, and it works great. I can get the same yield from 1000W that I used to get from 2000W.

I use an el-cheapo mover. It takes like 10 min to move 4ft. Used a timer on my 400 bulb.1hr on and 1hr off. Only has 1hr increments. Got to get 1 with 15 min increments for my 1000. 15 on an 15 off. That way I think all get good light and not too hot. And light hits the plant from different angles as it moves.Don't have but a couple of grows under my belt. So from a noobs point of view I like the mover because I don't have to shuffle my garden as much to give all of my little darlins good equal light.
I do not need the mover now but use it anyway. 1hr on 1off :joint:

I wonder if you could set up a rail system to simulate the sun rising and setting everyday for the plants :chin:
Probably wouldn't have any extra benefit, but it would be cool to watch. :joint:

If you could get it to move that sloooowwwww. :lurk: That's at lot like it works. the light intensity increases and decreases as it moves. It just never sets till 18: :2cents:

i havent used movers for flowering yet but i dont think they double the yield. I'd say 30% or so. They are great for veg though i can put the 1000 close to the plants without burning anything

a little cheaper idea would be get just interchange light times so you dont have to bother with rails. for example have 2 600s side by side just keep flipping one on and off interchanging times every 2, or more hours. Just make sure the second light is on and fully lit before you turn the 1st off to interchange. Same results as a light mover and actually a little cheaper.

Great responses everyone!

This is what I really like different experience and ideas from everyone!

I like that idea about the Sun coming up and going down, you are right , it would be fun to watch, but I am sure impractical.

Thanks Trichome!

It works then thats all that counts my friend.

Thanks Diego

Thanks all, my memory is bad so if I forgot you sorry

Its interesting that the plants leaves turn and follow the light as it moves back and forth on a light rail.

not if you count the wear and tear and additional electricity - the load to start a 600 is about 3 times the operating load - and to have a 600 system that is only being used 6 out of 12 hours - combined with the multiple off-on cycles - it's not only inefficent, it's hard on the equiptment.

I will be finding out about light movers - I just installed a Light Rail 3.5

If the light remained at the same heighth , but the light will be 1/2 to 1/3 closer to the plants - increasing the "solar dose" by over 400% when the light is closest

In addition - penetraition to the lower bud sites should benifit also. I think movers are helpful to a working grow and offer higher yeilds with the same lights. If I'm right - I may buy another

I actually used to have 2 rails with 2 1000 hps per rail in a 14x10 flower room...was trying to pack my entire room and keep the plants healthy....well, I switched to four stationary lights hung in a square and have better yields now than before...I dropped down in the number of plants, but now my plants just seem to produce bigger, better buds...maybe southwind was right when talking about the time it takes the lights to travel, the other side isn't getting blasted as with stationary...who knows, all i know is that stationary works best for me...stay safe

Perhaps you could limit the distance the light travels on the rail, gaining the benifit of cooler lights and being able to cover a bigger canopy without losing so much light.

Just ordered one myself....not going to use much of it tho.....total of about 2-2 1/2' of movement...just need a "bit" more.
