Cloning in straight Coco?

Anyone do it or is it all Jiffy Plugs and Rapid Rooters for you guys?

Putting together a sticky of clone techniques and want to cover as many basic methods as possible.

Ive done it in straight coco but it isn't my preferred method. It definately takes longer than an aero setup. My method was to wash the coco thouroughly, and keep it very saturated going into the dixie cup. I only use one small flourescent bulb over them as we all know too much light on a clone ain't good and this method is slow. Around 5 days or so the coco in the cup will be close to drying out so any light cups get watered but not saturated like the initial fill. The next time the cups dry up a bit I'll water and then invert the cup and check for roots. From there it's repeat the last step until you have a clone or a dead cutting. Average rooting time is 10-14 days. I've never had roots within the first week and suggest not inverting the cup and checking during the first week.

just get some rockwool plugs and IBA cloning gel....cheapest easiest...fuck a 300 dollar machine

I use coco for clones works great. Dont saturate it, i get get roots in a week most of the time...peace

I just tried it and it worked for me! I didn't really keep track of how long or anything, just threw a bunch of cuts in there, in canna coco with EWC tea poured through it.

I put em in a 5 gallon bucket with saran wrap *mostly* covering the top (don't want humidity too high),
about 6 feet from a 400 watt MH and also the vegging plants blocked a lot of the light.

this is probably one of the easiest ways to clone....its great and cheaper than buying rockwool cubes.
just take some cuts and stick them in beer cups that have been soaked in half strength ph'd solution. depending on your humidity u might have to cover them for a couple of days. DONE!!!

always. Ive been cloning into strait coco and theyre blowing the rapid rooters away, its the way to go.


do a couple experiment clones to c for yourself, coco takes the win.

Firstly,
Even a retarded baboon can clone.
That said, if you're having trouble, don’t feel bad-it can be tricky.
Here's a simple solution for cloning that's cheap, easy, and actually works 100% of the time-as long as you follow the E-Z-Bake directions.
I'm only posting this once, so pay attention.

-Grab some 16 oz. beer cups, and drill drainage holes in the bottom.

-Fill cups with coco coir, dampened with 50/50, one-half strength GH-based veg formula.
(From "The Recipe" - 6ml micro,9ml bloom per gallon at 6.0 pH,cut in half with already-balanced 6.0 pH water @ as low PPM as possible or distilled/RO-)

-Cut clones 6"-8" long, let soak in rooting hormone for two minutes.

-Stick clones into cups, as deep as possible, tamp coco firmly.

-Mist all clones, ONCE, lightly, with 6.0 pH water.
Do not, not, not cover.
(No need, the stems hold more than enough moisture for rooting-)

-Set in trays under floros, keep room temps at 77f-81f, and your lighting direct>indirect is fine....


In about a week, (+/-,depending on environment) you'll have thick white roots, and some giant fucking clones, all rooted and ready for another week in the cups, then on to your main potting session before flower.
It saves time and money (which = more time!) by not having to transplant starter R/W cubes into cups, and not dicking with humidity domes and all that PITA ancillary shite.

You have now been enlightened on how to clone, Reservoir Style.

i have, turbo...and nothing beats cloning in coco....its just too easy. i like not having 2 different types of medium. the only thing i havent compared it to is aero, which im pretty sure blows any method out of the water.

I clone in 100% vermiculite and plant the plug in 70/30 coco/pearlite once the root plug is established.

I have had my best success cloning in coco. Faster than my aerocloner without worrying about keeping cloner clean. I use it with Olivia's Cloning solution and get roots in 7 days.
The coco is soaked in Olivia's cloning solution, and the cut is dipped in the solution for a minute before placing in coco.
Works every time. Works better on larger cuts with thicker stems, if available.

i root in strait coco...

Just got done taking clones in Coco. First batch wilted quickly, but some still had roots in 7 days. 2nd batch did not wilt at all, but has only been 2 days...so we shall see how they root. Just like cloning anyother way, temps, lighting and humidity all will effect success. I would suggest soaking stems in cold water for 10 min or so, then rooting gel, powder or hormones used also. It has been 10 days for the 1st batch and a couple have a massive root system already. So if done right, it works really well. BTW the clones that wilted were under too much light and did not get pre-soak in cold water. Since using 26 watt cfl, heat pad set to 79 they all look great.

I used to use coco to root cuts in but constantly had wilting problems unless I kept the humidity way up by pouring water in the bottom of my propagation tray and closed the vents on the cover almost all the way. I went to rockwool cubes and have never looked back - just soak your rockwool in RO water, pH'd to 5.7 for an hour and then just cut, dip, and stick... cut the clones, dip them into a diluted solution of Vita-Grow, and then stick em into the cubes. Set those in your propagation tray and dome em - vents half open - set the tray on top of your heat mat, set the thermostat to 75F and relax....... in a few days, re-wet the cubes with the 5.7pH'd water, and after doing that a couple of times, you'll see some fat roots shooting out the bottoms and sides of the rockwool... then just take the rooted cuts in their cubes and put em in their veg pots.

I've even gone the gro-clone water-cloner route and had only marginal results - shit rooted but it took 2-3 weeks and I just needed to be able plan better than that would allow me or my trays were gonna stay empty for a week or so. Hope this helps...

I have done both aero and coco, aero seems to show roots sooner, but the sucess rate isn't as high as when I go straight into coco, but stright into coco takes more time, so it all depends on what your goals are, and my cloner didn't cost 300... but then again I have a really handy husband that likes to tinker and build things.

For coco, I do use coco that's relativelt damp, but not soaking, I like to feed the bonsai moms well, but make them hungry for N, then I take cuts with a razor, scrape the bottom of the stem slightly and put the end of the stem in hormex, then it can go either in the cloner or a cup of coco, floros about 14" above.

Some strains take a bit longer than others to clone. I also like to cut the leaves on the lowest part of the cut, it seems that the cut makes roots faster and the growth is more vigorous than if I didn't cut the leaves on the bottom of the cut.. just what I experienced with trial and error.

Rockwool and the pucks are just more stuff to buy and increasing expenses and resources, so stick with what you have.

want to mention.......always use scarification!

I use jiffy pellets or a mix of 60/40 coco/perlite. Same strike rate. I'm pretty close to 100% with bottom heat.

I propagate plants as a profession and the 60/40 coco perlite mix is the one we use at work. It is pretty well standard in the propagation industry. We also use Clonex purple and high pressure mist jets to keep the foliage cool while the roots develop.

I watched someone who had never cut a clone before, butcher 12 cuts and stuff them into coco in a humidity dome. 10 days later they had roots bursting out of the bottom, that showed me something right there..


I pre-soak the cuts in water, apply clonex gel, then stick em in moist coco, cover with dome, DONE.

works every time under 10 days with a 95% success rate.
