YOUR WORST/DISAPOINTED/OVERATED STRAIN(S)

G

Guest

There are a lot of conditions that can lead one to believe that a strain is bad and many of them don't have much to do with the actual seeds, but i have a hard and fast rule. If i pop 10 seeds of any variety from any breeder and there arent at least a couple of good females that perfom well and are a good representation of the line, then i know what the score is. If you get something of value from these type of seeds/strain it will be out of sheer luck.

I want to agree whole heartedly with JoJoancer. Too many varieties is a clue to potential problems.

"The Jugglers Rule" applies to the cannabis seed industry. Without ever an exception, a juggler's talents decrease as the number of balls he tries to juggle increases. The worlds greates juggler is an unmitigated failure if he keeps adding balls to his act. 4, maybe 5 strains is all that one breeder can appropriately develop and refine. Legitimate, trained professional seed companies,(not cannabis) assign as many as 20 team members to variety/seed development projects and the effort may take the team several years.

Its my beleif that unless the company is a cooperative such as Nirvana or Dp, or unless the company is large such as sensi, there just isnt any capacity for quality development. I tend to avoid companies with 25 strains unless there is some special circumstance that allows them to be competent. I feel its a preety good bet to conclude that a significant number of the varieties result from the simple act of dusting a female with a male and putting the seeds out the door with a mouth watering description. A few groupies later and the seeds are the hottest thing on the market.

Petrola Headstash was a god awful strain for me. Im not supprised though, reeferman should be the posterboy for the strain-a- minute philosopy

Hi Silverback,
great post:yes:, i sort of both agree and disagree with what your saying (if that makes sense),
it's true that it's easy for a grower to place bad judgment on a strain by only growing a few beans (i agree with you this isn't large enough #'s to get an overall view of a strain),
but the thing about the seed buisness and the numerous strains that are being released is there's no doubt as time goes by strains are gonna get weaker and less interesting in every aspect:
eg: taste, high, aroma, duration of high etc,
eg: say for example Sam Skunkman when he first bred Skunk, obviously the pinnacle of breeding, the next breeder from the next generation uses Sam's Skunk crossed to 1 of their varieties to produce something new is also most likely gonna produce something outstanding, but as the generations of breeders pass there's undoubtedly gonna be mistakes made along the line by a breeder(s) who'll make poor selections, so that 1 breeder's poor selection will affect the next breeder in the next generation who's gonna use his work, skip a few generations again and the next breeder may also use the breeder's who used the breeder's poor selection/work, and so it continues like the domino effect, resulting in a dramatic overall quality decrease,
an example of this would be Green's - i'm not in any way trying to slander his work as i've never grown any of his wares but there's no way in hell he can release around 40 strains putting each line through proper selection, testing the progency etc etc , not a chance man, so there's definately gonna be lines detrimental to the future breeders in there (if anyone takes the chance of using his lines),
1 poor selection by 1 breeder from 1 time may not show any bad results anytime soon, but 5, 10, 15 or 20 years down the line when the dust settle's those poor breeding decisions can catch up and affect the strains that's gonna be available to us or the next generation of growers in the future

peace

Hazeseeker, I think you're probably right on every count and in fact, you've probably hit upon the true nature of this problem: That would be breeder strain description/info and grower expectations of the outcome of his efforts.

If Green's,( or any other breeder, he's gonna be pissed at us- no harm man), stated in his description which of the 40 v arieties really are a work in progress along with those that have been developed into fairly stable, quality strains the number of unrealistic expectations from growing the trains would be reduced along with the negative reports about growing it. Instead, breeders often present their wares as equal in quality. They generally arent. I think this behavior causes the breeder problems as well in that a grower achieving less than they expected is on the forums running down all the stock the breeder has, even though some of it might be very high quality.

I think that many grows that were reported to be disappointing are the result of unrealistic expectations by the grower. Every time Ive been disappointed, I didn't get what I expected .

I feel there needs to be 4 categories of seed varieties:

1. Premium Quality varieties. Quality stable strains, resulting from talented, experienced breeding programs

2. Standard Quality varieties. Varieties that hold good promise, good genetics but are generally unstable, have numerous phenos, but all the pheno's are good

3. Economy class. F2's, 2 dominant strains crossed, most pheno's are good, some may not be.

4. 2nds. Self describing, may be old. mixed, left overs.

This would allow for much clearer expectations for the seed purchaser and the grower

until breeders stop worrying about quantity over quality general blandness and inferior product ie. mutations hermies and so on and so forth will be produced, resulting in your disappointment ..that being said you can find keepers in every strain but as time goes by they will become less and less..bagseeds grows of shwag have turned out better dope than most mass producing breeder seeds i have spent good money on..no matter how well you trhink you can grow you are really only as good as the genetics you are growing..period!!

Rezdog's Sour Diesel IBL. Popped 2 seeds, got 2 females.

It may take a little more than 2 to find the target with any strain imo.
the Sensi Star doesn't look close to finished from what you have posted. Most weight comes late, but I hear ya though; didn't go as well as you expected.

Dont be fooled into thinking all desirable traits are het dominant. Recessive alleles produce crazy things as well.

I believe before I bash any strains I should first give the Breeders the credit they are due. Many hours of labor and love go into even the sorriest strain and it is all in the pursuit of the perfect creation. Some of these creations are incredible and others not so...

Thanks to all the breeders out there and keep up the good work... Without you I would be stuck not getting to experience some of the finer things in life... Thanks for the flavors and scents that will linger a lifetime...

Nirvana-SUPERGIRL...
Tried this strain after a friend of mine grew it and had awesome results (production wise). My findings were not so great... Big Heavy plants most grew uniform.
Low resin with a lot of pistils. 1 plant was different then the rest and yielded 12 ounces.
sorry smoke and very soft high.
Some hermed 3 weeks into flower no stress no light leaks just herm...
note also that these were fem. stock seeds.

Nirvana-NL5xHz bright lights
Not that i didnt like it, Just like the Original better.

Greenhouse-El Nino
Popped all 10 and got 8 females not bad. Plants grew well handled nutes well. overall it was actually a pleasure to grow. plants were also very heavy yielders. average of 5 oz plant. I say bad because of the taste and high. The taste was hashy at first but ended like a bitter almond almost leaving my mouth chalky and dirty feeling with a waxy texture of smoke.
The high was instant and then faded within the hour...

I give these opinions in the perspective that i gave these plants everything they needed for a perfect growing enviroment starting with water and ending with a perfect cure, these were my findings and not a bases of what the end result is. I didnt even put a dent into the phenos that may be out there. These results and opinions are based off the plants I have grown.

Very nicely said...Bravo.

Yeah, but if some folks had hit that pussy, and later got genital warts, I'd like to know.

Also a great point (in a hilarious way) and I think fair-game as long as the info given is taken with a grain of salt.

Just given the law of averages(subtracting out operator error) will give one a decent overview of a given strain, but it would seem that the quantitative numbers needed to get an average would be much too high to get a baseline before the "next batch" hit the soil (so to speak).

What do I know .....I just wanted to take the time to read everyone's input and say thank you.

Peace,

iGro

you keep on growing and trying different strains..i have more fun making crazy crosses than anything else..honestly other than mutants and hermies i don't think i have ever really had a bad strain...some plants from the same pack were just better..but honestly i love them all...peace out!

I forgot to mention another strain I wasn't happy with; Mandala's Kalichakra!

Decent high(nothing special) but the worst thing is it is major headache weed. A few hours after I would smoke it I would get a bad headache. I GAVE AWAY several oz's to some friends in the end. Then they told me they had passed it on too.

I ran it alongside Satori and Hashberry which both turned out great(especially the satori) but for some reason the KC had this effect.. I wouldn't recomment it to anyone especially med users.

Nirvana Big Bud. Or Big DUD as I liked to call them. Loved their Northern Light and White Rhino, but the Big DUD was a DUD. That was some bland, weak weed.

I was disappointed with Legends L.U.I., it grew nicely with big buds, but the smoke was very bland with almost no flavor or smell.

The most disappointing growing experience I had was Dj Short's Blueberry.
Bought 2 packs for like $300 out of 20 beans 18 germed, 5 were males, 3 runts, 4 mutants, 2 hermies. Remaining plants grew ok, but no blues and no berry smell.
Was an ok smoke, not as advertised, though. Had better results with way cheaper beans.
Later I read DJ saying that out of 30(!) plants of premium seed source (i.e. his $150+ beans) 1 spectacular keeper (i.e. a plant that actually is like advertised?) can be found. Well, 30 females? That's like 8 packs of beans for $150 a pop...

That being said, I've seen really nice looking Blueberry plants here on icmag (how many of those are DP, homemade FNs, etc?) and maybe I'm just unlucky but I sure as hell won't shell out another $300 bucks to try again.

I was debating with myself whether to put in all the strains that where mentioned once or
just those that have been said twice or more. In 5 or six pages I will redo the list continuing
from this previous one but only using 2+ counts. In addition I will only count those strains
that come with a good reason.

This thread is thought to be informative and a "itz crap cuz it iz shit" isn't enough, so
appologies in advance.
Thanks basilfarmer good post and to everyone:friends:
