I used to be able to get FF OF at $10 a bag... it was the only soil I used!!! I simply added a little perlite and FF Fruit and Flower dry formulae as it contains all the shit I use now... but its at damn near $20 a bag and making my own is just good exercise... :badday:

yeah, 15 to 20 a bag for me... but it's worth it in my eyes. ;)

OF should be ph'd around 6.5 due to the crabshell content. I never had to add any lime unless I added extra peatmoss or humus to it...

I use a this mix:
1/3 spaghnum peat moss
1/3 vermicutlite
1/3 composted humus and cow manure
also 1/4 cup of blood and bone meal.
and some dolimite lime to balance ph

I get great great growth rates with this mix.

I'm a simple dude... and this mix has never done me wrong.

Fox Farm Ocean Forrest with tons of extra Perlite & Dolomite Lime

See. Simple. :) I even start seedlings in this mix with ZERO burn issues EVER. I also use RO water for "cooking", as daltron puts it. I cook my soil for a few days 'til I get that rich smell I'm looking for. I'm wierd like that. Peace.

Yup, just keep'er simple....

Sams Choice(walmart brand) potting soil, miracle grow potting soil, earthgro, or whatever, add perlite and D. lime...

My 'balls get pretty big too...

22 liter bag of Jungle Growth Pottin Mix (Manufactured by Peidmont Pacific)

1/4 cup of Dolomite Lime to buffer and stabalize the pH (mix is comprised of 60% pine bark and also has alot of sphagnum peat moss in it)

No nutes added, haven't gone that route yet..right now it's just good ole' Fox Farms GB TB BB and their additives OS BB and Cha-Ching!

My mix is always changing, presently Ocean Forest/ProMix Seed Starter 40/60. I use the seed starter becuz its just excellent for keeping soil from compacting. I like to control feeding so reading my plants and ferting with a high nitro guano, seems to keep them pretty happy in Veg..maybe ill try something slightly different for Flower. :chin:

A few excellent amendments haven't been mentioned by anyone on this thread so far:

Soybean meal
Alfalfa Meal
RAW HUMATES (why pay lots of $ for watered down humic acids when you can put 'em right in the soil)
SOFT rock phosphate (has over 70 trace minerals)
molasses meal (food for beneficials)

In many people's opinions, these 'green' additives make blood and bone meal (which are good but tend to attract insects) obsolete. I don't use mushroom compost but I've heard great things.

You simply cannot go wrong with this recipe. :canabis:

Seedlings, Rooted Clones:
Foxfarm's Ocean Forest
wormcastings
perlite

Bigger Clones, Vegging Plants (per 10gal):
9gal Foxfarm's Ocean Forest
1cup of wormcastings
7oz Whitney Farm's Blood Meal
7oz Whitney Farm's Bone Meal
10% perlite

Flowering Plants (per 10 gal):
9gal Foxfarm's Ocean Forest
1cup of wormcastings
7oz Whitney Farm's Blood Meal
7oz Whitney Farm's Bone Meal
10% perlite
1cup of Budswel Bat Guano
2tsp of crushed dolomite per gal

Tips & Tricks:
*2/3 cup of Foxfarms BigBloom per gal of water; Water atleast 1cup if growing in a 5gal container, or 7oz if in 3gal container. Water with this only once during the first or second day in flower, and then continue on regular watering schedule.

*cO2 during mid-flower/till-harvest, use bike pumps that use cO2 cartridges, spray 1 or 2 cartridges a day, helps get the bud fatter.

Loving this discussion about organic soils. I used to grow hydro using purely liquid nutrients. The yields were great, however, I definitely noticed an improvement in the flavour and effect of the pot grown in organic soil.

A few questions as I am still new at the game. Please help me if you can.

1. I have heard that molasses is a good addition. If so, how and when should it be added? During veg or flowering? In the soil or added with water?

2. I have heard that the use of lime in the soil will stop the composting process. Is this true?

3. Where I live (in a far-off land) I don't have access to these wonderful organic products I read about on this post. I have access to and am using black soil, cow manure, perlite, peat moss, chicken manure, bone meal, lime powder. How does this sound? Is there anything else I can add to make it even better? Keep in mind there are many things I cannot easily find in the gardening section of the local home supply store, but I can perhaps find things in their natural state or in other markets or sections of the store.

I humbly await your advice. Thank you!

i start with a bale of sunshine mix and 2 bales of fox farm of 1bale of ff light warrior(mostly for seedlings) and dolimite lime...1/2 bale of mix 1 bale of ffof and 1 gallon of the light warrior.mix thouroughly let set overnite at least..no need for nutes for 3weeks or so because of the ffof(preferted)off we go!!!
very simple but, could be rather expensive..the ocean forest aint cheap on the other side of the rocky mountains.i pay 30$ a bale!but its great shit!

aussie soil mix.

here my mix if you can get all the materials give it a go and show everyone ur results...

1/5 worm castings
1/5 fine grade vermiculite(the stuff you use to grow your shrooms)
1/5 fresh cow droppings(the wetter the better)
2/5 cactus potting mix(already has a great mix of perlite and nutrients)

now add another layer of the vermiculite around the top of the pot to retain moisture for you out doorers or for looks in your indoor.

I used to try a lot of different mixes with promix and such, now I simply use ocean forest with a little perlite and dolomite lime,it works perfectly for me.I dont understand why folks are so concerned about having exactly a 6.3-6.5 soil ph its definately going to change over time, using dolomite is the best way to deal with soil ph problems

Everyone seems to love fox farms but when i started it was oct and there were hardly any growing supplies around in my area. At a local nursery i found this stuff.

Master Nurserys Gardeners Gold

All natural rich blend of Fir bark fines, forest humus, sphagnum peat moss, perlite, worm castings chicken manure, bat guano, kelp meal and pH balanced to 6.5 with oyster shell and dolomites limes. For use in all indoor/outdoor potting containers and raised bed applications.

With seedlings i cut it with 50 percent promix and lots of perlite and when they were big enough just perlite and this stuff... I would feed peridocally with mex bat guano, mollasses, sea kelp and occaisionally epsom salts but maybe once a month. I just finished my first week of flowering and have also done to indo bat guano feedings.
The plants have thrived and always appeared healthy and look great now..

I will never use anything else.
