Deputies seized more than 50 marijuana plants from a Laurinburg man's residence, according to Investigator Scott Jacobs.
William Alexander Jones, 40, of Aberdeen Road, was arrested at his home Friday morning and charged with manufacturing marijuana.
"We received a tip about marijuana plants at the home of Mr. Jones," Jacobs said.
A deputy was dispatched to check for the illicit plants, finding 56 individual plants in front of a storage building in Jones' back yard, according to Jacobs.
The sheriff's investigator said the estimated street value of 56 mature marijuana plants is around $67,000.
He also said that illegal drugs are taxed at a rate based on the quantity and variety of drug.
Jones was placed in Scotland county jail under a $20,000 secured bond. His first appearance will be Friday, Jacobs said.
"This is the time of year we receive a lot of tips about marijuana," Jacobs said. "We as a department encourage people to call us with any information about someone growing marijuana."
"We're receiving tips in reference to citizens growing marijuana in their homes," Sheriff Shep Jones said. "We're following up on these leads."
The sheriff added that the plants will be destroyed once they are documented and photographed.
The department will have the plants burned, a process that is videotaped to ensure drugs are disposed of in a proper manner, Sheriff Jones said.
