Why not just use soil?

this is a fine example of how multiple factors can change what the correct answer might be

take a look @ eliot coleman; his garden soil is his potting mix is his garden soil ~its a matter of soil-building

like clack pointed out dark rich soil from remote areas can be well suited too

there is an old thread in the organic soil forum 'should i use local soil' or some such where the OP indicated he was having great success employing *some* local soil in his potting mix ~many other forumites chimed in similarly

the correct answer for you will vary depending on your particular circumstance and materials available to you ~not the least of which is pot size

theres lots of reasons to go hydro. cleaner. no soil to mess with, faster growth ,slightly higher yield and the list goes on . I myself have tried just about every form of hydro. I prefer soil myself.i don't need pumps, chillers, meters, hydro mediums, and the list goes on

that would be messy

:dunno:messy is kind of a funny term ....... i know i make a hell of a mess mixing dirt

FWIW you can contain the mess from transplanting from dirt to hydro in a 5 gallon bucket and it takes less time to clean up than it does after brewing a tea in the same bucket. i've done it dozens of times ....... it is not that difficult.

rinse all the dirt out of the root ball by soaking, swishing and teasing it in a 5 gallon bucket of water (at room temp), repot with or without some hydro media,go easy on light and nutes for a day or so. done

some things are easier than they seem

I suppose possibly clogging some filter element would be the only concern...

very true. it is impossible to get all the dirt out of a root ball no matter how hard you try. i was always a fan of ebb and flow because there aint much to go wrong ........ rinsing a root ball off and then putting it in any kind of recycling drip system would have it's own set of problems

but thats a hydro thang, and this is about dirt. i was only pointing out possibilities, i didn't want to derail anyone thread
