Who grows in plain jane potting soil and just adds liquid nutes during feed?

If your are just starting out you may wanna give miracle grow moisture control potting soil a try. It is a pretty good mix if you want something easy. Its a mix of soil peat moss and coco fibre with nutes and water crystals already added. And when it starts to get dry it turns a red color letting you know you need to water. Real good for beginners. I used it for awhile until getting rid of used soil became a prob. and I switched to hydro. hope this helps

coco is great stuff, neutral ph and sterile. But the price has gone up alot since the tsunami in 04' i guess alot of coco husks come from there. Although a $20 block does expand quite a bit.

You do transplant from smaller to larger pots using coco just as you do soil, correct?

Correct.

Just ordered canna's coco specific two part fert system

You might want to add some Cannazym and Rhizotonic to that order,,, both excellant additives for any method of growing.

If you go to canna.com they have a coco grow guide. I dont usually take much notice of such guides as different strains require different doses but i stuck to their guide throughout my first coco grow and the plants thrived. It could well be worth a quick look at just for the amounts of Rhizo and Cannazym to use at various stages.

Good luck

Already played around with their site some. I will be sure to get that stuff too. I'm not too concerned about if the medium went up in cost a litle or if i need an extra $15 bottle or not....I just want easy, healthy mj plants!!!!

Thanks for steering me in this direction. Hope to see you on the coco forum soon!!!

stoned teacher;

be careful with switching mediums so frequently also. It is hard to establish and determine the problem when conditions are for ever changing.

Coconut coir and Promix are great mediums, I have seen both in action, however they require additional supplements to be added to their mix. This is where it can get confusing because everybody swears to their own mix as the one to use.

Potting soil such as Whitney's farm and Fox Farm's ocean forest are ready to go right out of the bag. No hassle no more SPENDING MONEY on additional supplements no mixing and matching and calculating.
It's like the chia pet; add water and let dem grow!!!

good luck.

Fox Farm Ocean Forest contains Earthworm Castings, Bat Guano, Humus, peat moss, Crab meat, Shrimp meal, vermiculite compost, perlite, granite dust, kelp meal, oyster shells.
Whitney's farm has the same ingredients but add bone meal and blood meal.

I PM'ed you back, and thanks....

I will likely try some foxfarm as well as coco and see what I like. An extra $100 to try different mediums is worth me finding method that works best for me....

I also like trying new things. This hobby is really fun for me, especially when it's going well.

If this isn't doable I'm going to hydro. I don't want to have to make teas and mix 4 different things (some not found at local stores) in soil then blend 4 things together during feeding. I just want to use soil (bagged promix), maybe add some peerlite for drainage/aeration, and feed.

I read sproutco's post that said the floranova nutes would work this way, but I haven't read of anyone that is doing just that wih success, and later read a post that said that Sproutco hasn't even done this himself (no offense to anyone...I just want experience from growers).

So can you just use plain potting soil mix and one of the hydro system nutes, and just mix that approprietly for watering and thats it?

If so, what nute system do you recommend?

I already have the BC Grow/Bloom/Boost 3 part nute system and have just started using that after mixing more crap in soil and mixing crap for feeding has again left me with plant problems. I'm sick of it. Haven't been doing it long enough to notice the plants getting better, but they haven't gotten worse eiher.

Come on someone...gimme your SIMPLE SIMPLE potting soil and simple feeding advice!

I have done exactly this. As plain jane soil as you can get, Walmart $.96 potting soil. I used FloraNova Bloom only, at 5ml/gallon in veg and 8ml/gallon in flower.

Check the 'In the Den - TRC Sweet13' link in my sig if you want to read more in depth. With that particular strain, I did have to add some Cal-Mag Plus in flower, but that seemed more strain dependent. The grow did not go as well as it could have, but that was due to equipment failure, not nutes.

Hope that answers your question!

I'm a proponent of the simple as pie method: I use FFOF right out of the bag and fertilize with Peter's (a veg formula and a bloom formula).

i use pro mix... add perlite (30 percent perlite.. 70 pro mix)

and i use Flora Nova ferts

thats it, thats all... cant say if its better/worse then anything else because its how i grew my first grow... and my second... and now my third...

I use both coco and soil for my grows. I like to keep it simple and get good results with what I do. For my coco I use AN A+B veg and AN A+B bloom to straight out of the bag coco. For soil I use Ocean Forest and the FF line of nutes (grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom)accoring to the schedule on their site. I run a lot of tasty strains and use soil for best flavor and stop flowering nutes and flush at 6 weeks.

tried a bunch of dif soils 2 i found to be better then the rest sta green moisture control and pro -mix bx if sta green didnt have fungus gnats in the peat i would def recommend it over the pro mix but since switching to pro mix havent had 1 fungus gnat. i also have tried the 3 part gh line up and found it worked good went in to hydro store to get refill owner suggested trying flora nova works great simple the most mixing is early flower when u mix 7.5ml grow with 5ml of bloom i have since added kool bloom to the line up with improved bud size thats it all they get u can look at my gallery for bud pics
keep it growing green!!!

I just get whatever soil's on offer at my local surplus store. Don't even add any perlite anymore, didn't makemuch difference. I use Plagron nutes. Nothing special really and the results are fine. :joint:

I've heard Plagron (soil and nutes)works well, however, it is not available in the US. I don't know what product, in the US, would be comparable to the Plagron line.

Simple soil & nutes

Simple soil & nutes

I use WalMart Expert soil with added perlite. If I have to mix a big batch for large pots to put outside I add bone and blood meal and pelleted dolomite lime. I also add composted cotton burrs I get from a local nursery. If Expert soil is good enough for Bog it's probably good enough for me. I have also been reusing my soil after it has been in a compost bin for several months.

Nutes are Peters 20-20-20 & 10-50-10 used with Pure Blend Grow and Bloom. This has worked pretty well and the only change I'm thinking about is going with Pure Blend Pro.

let em keep it simple for you.

60% fox farms ocean forest, 40% chunky perlite. calmag in ro water during 3 weeks of veg, the use your prefered nutes at 50% strength for 2 weeks, then 75% thru harvest. its easy and fool proof. Dont worry about all that other shit. dont add amendments or additives. use miracle grow bloom formula as your nute if you want.

keep it simple till you get to know your girls better, dont switch strains every grow either. lots of noobs do that and cant figure out why they cant get a consistent grow. learn your girls.

speaking as someone who has been a soil and hydro guy...dont do hydro until you understand your girls habits and you can recognize and treat the basic nute and pest problems in your sleep. the probs just happen too fast for a noob to deal with and usually cause major disappointment

best of luck,

SS

I used to work in hydroponics in one of Canadas green meccas and practically all soil type growers(promix is technically soiless) would use straight up sunshine #4 or pro-mix(some added perlite and/or lime) and then fed with a hydroponic fert. You have to be careful you don't over do it when the soil is fresh because of its own nutrient charge but other than that you just feed em with a hydro regimen of your choice. I feed everytime at a mid-high rate and just make sure I get a good 1/4-1/3 run off to insure I don't get any buildup. Wastes some fert but depending on the size of your show who gives a shit if that helps insure a sucessful and more worry free crop. If you monitor the ppms of your runoff from specific plants you can further insure nothings going wrong. Your plants are getting everything they would in a hydroponic system. It works great.

same here, had really good results with regular cheap potting soil with plagron fish emulsion.
