Whitefly Infestation

Car exhaust seems to keep the buggers dead. Doesn't harm the buds either, actually, they seem to "bask".

Because we also organic garden, we dumped all outdoor plants that the whitefly enjoys, and will not replant any for a year as advised by Dept. of Agriculture.

car exhaust will kill everything....

wrap your lips around that thing for more then 20 seconds and itll be a miracle you can still walk..

ive had these fuckers on my patio for the whole summer and the only thing that killed them was winter... maybe cold? i KNOW they hate wind....
ive use like 4 bottles of safer soap on my vines and they were still there till winter!!!LOL!

If you grow inside a regimen of whitefly predators (Encarsia Formosa) and lady bugs in the flower area and Neem oil in the veg area, only things to have worked so far for me.

Vash are you growing indoors or outdoors? Preadators won't work as well if you are in outdoor enviroment that is not semi controlled.

Everyone here has given some pretty solid advice about getting rid of them though too

As a Cali grower, whitefly is a huge problem here. We have 3 varieties of whitefly. The No Pest strip works great for fungus gnats, but didn't do squat for whitefly. If the infestation is small, alternating spraying Safers and Neem every three days will keep them under control. Both are safe and won't harm the buds or you. Using a Shop Vac to suck the bastards up is fun, but don't do it stoned or you will suck up half your leaves, too. The sticky traps will get a lot of them, but fly strips do the same job and are 1/4 of the cost. I would still like to find out if the CO2 will kill them as well as it kills spider mites. I will find out next week when I open a bottle of CO2 in my daughters flower room, which is covered in whitefly.

I grow inside, Stitch, so the predators will do the job for me.

I tried the predators and they didn't do shit for me. Sticky traps or fly strips, combined with the Safers and Neem that MyNameStitch suggested are still the best way to control them. I think that if you get a heavy infestation, the only way to get rid of them is to control the population until harvest, empty the room and then use Raid Concentrated Deep reach foggers, which can be purchased at Wal-Mart. They contain Cypermethrin. I might use it in early veg, but I wouldn't use it in flower. The one time I used it in veg, I noticed a few flying the next day, but in 24 hours, they were all dead.
I grow inside too, but i live in an ag area where whitefly is a horrible problem. I can go outside and see them flying around my neighbors bushes. They get on your clothes and ride into your grow room, or come in the tiniest holes or vents. I could take off my clothes and work naked, but hot 1000W bulbs and old, wrinkled skin do not go well together.

Stitch, honey, I have no idea how to kill them with the CO2. I read the threads on killing spider mites with CO2 and people differ at the amounts. Some folks say to kill the adults, you need 5,000 PPM for 4 hours and others say 10,000 ppm for 4 hours. to kill eggs, you need to do it for 24 hours. Most controllers won't go to 10,000ppm. I am just going to check the seal on my daughters room, open the valve on a 20# container, shut the door and leave it for 24 hours. I might kill all her plants and I might just kill every bug in the place. At this point, I don't know. Whitefly leave behind so mush honeydew on the leaves, and her area has high humidity, so black mold is a given. If the CO2 doesn't work, I am considering nuclear weapons.

Seriously, if you have not tried Spinosad against whiteflies you may be missing an important tool for controlling them. Monterey Garden Insect Spray is the product I used. It knocked the hell out of a burgeoning population of the critters. I live in a cotton producing region so they are cloudlike with their numbers on a still morning. Whiteflies are a recurring pest in my garden. The Encarsia were the only predators that worked to any degree and I have tried many different predators. Avid will offer some control but I prefer to save that for spider mites only. Shop Vacs are a great tool for those boring days around the house when there just isn't anything to do. I use a bamboo stake to rustle the leaves to get the whiteflies airborne. I turn the wide floor attachment upside down to vacuum the whiteflies as they rise above the canopy. I can usually avoid sucking down the tops of my plants that way. Soap spray is the standby control for me.

A cheaper alternative to store bought sticky traps is to make your own using bright yellow plastic duo-tang folders smeared with a thin coat of Tree Tanglefoot. I cut the folders into sections and hang them just above canopy level. Hippy engineering at its finest!

Here might be a good idea. Get you a shot glass fill it 3/4 way full with white vintager and add just 2 drops of dawn dish soap. Place this glass somewhere near by your plants. Watch that glass fill up with those dumb drunkards. It must be a small glass with a shallow rim works best. You can also use red wine instead of white vintager. The choice is up to you. The mix in the glass is no good after 2 weeks or so.

no pest strip is completely uneffective for whiteflies

to make sure i bought 3 of them and sequestered a few plants

the whitefly population increased undeterred

no pest strips are good for plenty of bugs

white flies however just laugh at them

This is a really old thread but I know a little about whiteflies. I have had them on my plants for ever, if you want the best get Doktor doom total realease fogger. Its non toxic and can be used up till the day of harvest. It kills all of the adults - I just haven't had time to kill the small ones. . .

We still had whiteflies after using the organic solutions and daily baths!

Someone told me CO2, which we don't have. So, we got very large heavy duty lawn bags, and wrapped and ran car (specifically, Jeep) exhaust into them a few times for about 5 minutes each. Every day. Did not see any more.

Harvested them within a week (as scheduled), except for one needing longer hid outdoors "just in case". It did have a few back, but most migrated off. So then they got my gardenias and roses.

Car exaughst is CO (carbon monoxide) a poisonous gas and it has a lot of pollutants in it. What you wanted to try was CO2 (carbon dioxide) dry ice, its good for plants.

Hi friends!

Are the corpses, eggs and excrements of the white fly an issue to human health?

I gave up the fight in mid flowering and all I need to know is how safe it is for me to smoke flowers which are a bit sticky (not as much as the leaves, but they still have some eggs and excrements on them for sure).

Thanks!

Good gardens! :)

Yeah, thanks man!

I was lucky about mold. My plants were full of whitefly but they were not affected by mold. Anyway I had to cut them some 10 or 15 days before the right time in order to avoid it, so they are clean from mold but not as mature as I like them.

Got to be more preventive next time... :bashhead:

Thanks again and good smokes ;) hehe... :joint:
