white or mylar?

You can get mylar at any hydro store.

Sometimes the backside of christmas paper is mylar.

Emergency blankets are cool for smaller areas (Wal-Mart etc)

Not true about reflective property of Mylar versus flat white.... at least not regarding efficiently reflecting over the entire space... Mylar, like a mirror focuses points of light while flat white reflects evenly, thus more efficient at bouncing usable light around the whole space... I used Mylar and foil for years and years but after switching to Panda Film have noticed much better results, plus far more durability, easy to keep clean and lightproof!

2mil mylar is the best for reflection and ease of use (as far as mylar is concerned). Space blankets are a waste of time, you need to double them up to get good reflectivity, they come folded, which creates creases, which further create hotspots. Stick with 2 mil mylar , or white elastomeric roof coating. Reflectex insulation (Lowes) is also very reflective, inbetween mylar and white paint, but has the added bonus of being extremely durable. It is the same thing many car window shades are made from, the silver ones for across the windshield. Here is a link for a 54" x 25' roll of 2 mil mylar

In the end it is worth the extra $10.

thanks, i just got back from the hydro store too, damn. Im probably going to lowes cause its closest. Anyone ever try using a parabola shaped reflector to concentrate the light at one point. Im thinking since its at one point it wont work well when the ladies get bigger

1 mil mylar sucks bong water. It rips too easy and is a bitch to work with ....

The brother is right - 2 mil mylar is the ticket and the thickness I use in my grow room.

Lowes / Home Depot do not carry mylar -- not yet that is ....

white paint will reflect better than 90% and mylar at the hydro shop costs 100 for a roll, so I vote for white paint. also as aformentioned white paint does a better job of diffusing the light

Mylar has a reflective index (98%) which is above white paint (90%) and is considered superior for grow areas. This stuff basically lays waste to anything else you can place on the walls.

It is all about reflecting lumens to your ladies. Foylon is right up there in reflective index with mylar but is generally more $$$.

Mylar does NOT create hot spots as will aluminum foil.

$100 a roll? You need a new hydro shop. Look for smaller lengths, most people don't need a 100' roll, I'm guessing the thread starter needs less than 25' feet, which can be bought for less than $40 in most cases. The cheapest way is white elastomeric roof coating, found at Lowes and other home improvement stores, stay away from aluminum foil, it isn't very reflective and creates way to many hotspots. You get hotspots when the surface is kinked or creased some way or another. The reason it is so important to keep the mylar wrinkle free. It is also a good idea to give it a good wipedown with a clean lint-free cloth after hanging.

addtl problems with mylar include: it gets dirty if you foliar feed a lot and it is more work than just leaving white paint on the walls....

i live in an apt and am concious of how quickly my grow can be dismanteled in a worse case scenario, so for me white walls require no take down

good thoughs fellas

I'll tell ya which one is more durable and easier to clean.....white paint.
A couple of % in reflectivity won't make bugger all diff. As long as your starting with a decent amount of light.

I do like Mylar, but you are going to lose much of that 98% efficiency when it gets dirty. And it does get dirty fast. My vote is for Flat White Paint. There are even scrubable flat paints out now. If I were to get specific, I would recommend an outdoor flat white house paint. The reason being is that it is more durable and it has mold/mildew resistant properties. There will be a slight odor at first and it will take a bit longer to dry, but that’s about it. Good luck.

I agree with ya timtim... except for the easy to clean part... i had a mold prob last spring and nothing could have been easier than to take down the Panda carefully roll it up and take it outside for a cleaning... then put it back up... but what I really find advantageous about it is the light proofing it provides ... like a darkroom tent ... and its thick enough to install zipper doors or Velcro flaps ..and the dimensions of your space can be changed to fit size of grow in a few minutes... but yeah i will take paint over Mylar but Panda over paint.... imho
