WHICH fan for SIS DIY Pro-Style Carbon Scrubber?

Any thoughts on what type of fan should be used for the carbon scrubber designed by SIS?

JNugg, I got the design from you suggesting it in a couple posts, thx for keeping the FAQ alive. But man, if it really needs a $170 fan then it might not be as alluring as I once thought it was... Lemme know, I am really curious.

Does it have to be an inline fan? Because they seem to be really pricey... Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

$170 for a fan , I was stuck w\ the same dilemma.

Check out the Vaportek 4000. For $170 its easy, kinda cheap, quiet and it works. I dont know first hand (yet) but theres lots of threads that give it major props. Oh yea, and besides changing the filter once every few months ($50) set it and forget it.

Good Luck & keep that smell down!

Where the heck do you buy these Vaportek products? The website only has a catalog, and I have no local stores carrying such things.

Also, the vaportek 4000 is a little overkill for intents and purposes. But the $20 Ionic Pro at Walmart seems like it wouldn't do the job. Hmmm...

Like $230 with a cartridge after shipping.

Thanks for the reply. ;D

Now I've read that booster in-line fan's are not the same as a regular inline fan... That must be accurate, because I just found a 6" fan that is only $27ish on ebay, but in the image it says "booster fan"?

I'm not sure, it seems that it is rated at 240-250 cfm, which is accurate for 6" fans... Have I just found the right deal? Or junk that will waste my time?

"Booster" Fan, rated at 240 cfm

6" Fan

Comments? :chin:

Junk that will waste your time.

Booster fans are meant to work with air that's already in motion to achieve thier CFMs, when they are the sole airflow force, you can halve (or more) thier CFM rating.

From Suncourt's website (relevant statement in bold):
Model DB200

In Line Duct Fan™
Duct Diameter:................. 6"
Unit Weight:..................... 2.50 Lbs.
Max Boosted CFM:........... 250
Free Air CFM:.................. 160

Free Air CFM:.................. 160

So, could that be enough to power the SIS carbon scrubber? 160 cfm for that price is much more justifiable to myself.

Yeah, but you don't really get 160 CFM from that little guy, once you throw in some flex duct and the scrubber. These little guys really degrade under back pressure.

Of course, you team it up with a 90 CFM comp fan for $5-$10, and you'll see much better performance, more than enough to handle this task, I'd think. Just put your comp fan inline ahead of the booster.

Just for the record, I'd like to state that a good inline fan is one of, if not the best, investment you'll make in your room.

zolar's scavenged carbon filter /air filter

zolar's scavenged carbon filter /air filter

parts : about 8 in long 2in dia exhaust pipe flange [ Ever fix a broke tailpipe on a car]
about 6 ft shop vac type hose

Dayton blower " shaded pole blower looks like mini of squirrel cage blower in bottom of furnace [ grainger industrial supply $ 30--90 ? size]

cotton/ poly quilt stuffing

old plywood shipping crate about 8in x1 ft by 2 ft

flange from vac hose to 3-4 in round in side on blower

the blower has square out with mounting flange 4 holes

open old ship crate long side horizontal on one end cut square hole for blowers out drill through flange premade holes into plywood blower bolts here i used 1/4 inch mach screws and wing nuts

before bolting blower turn crate on side and drill bunch of 1/2 -- 1 in holes for exhaust both sides away from blower end

turn crate up right line box with quilt battinng like a cradle with blanket hanging over sides fill with charcoal and dry vent sheets fold quilt batting over and put top side of box back on its good to have some batting hanging out all aroud seam { helps seal ] screw top back on
use screws so its easier to change out char &dryer sheets

screw flange to blower intake --- you may have to custom make use sheet metal thin and duct tape a big funnel makes a good form for creating a shape

attach hose to flange and blower

drill 2 inch hole near top of grow room wall stuff exhaust pipe piece through wall and seal -i used a piece of rope covered with foam wedged til tight and zip tied foam and added another other foam and zip tie inside wall attach vac hose to exhaust pipe hose clamp

i found every thing around the house am pack rat total cost dryer sheets and hose clamps about 10 $

i put the whole filter box on a sturdy shelf on top of old squishy thick foam it really absorbed the noise and vibration

my room is 3x4x 6 ft 6 is height with two 4-5 inch intakes one with muffin fan one passive and 400 wt MH temps about 80 to 85 with circ fan inside room it works well to eat the smell of 4-5 insence in grow for test and smoke visibly moves toward out vent with circ fan off

hope this inspires or helps i check shop dumpsters regularly great source wood boxes lumber etc

Nitetiger, Blackfin, Zolar, thanks for the replies guys.

What I really need to know is what is the cheapest option for a fan to power the SIS carbon scrubber? It has a 1 inch thick layer of carbon and is about 24 inches tall. I need to find the cheapest fan possible.

Zolar, you mention the Dayton blowers. Looks like the prices are competitive on ebay. Maybe

Gotta run so I can't reply anymore, but thanks for the help guys, I need a cheap option for a fan for this SIS Carbon scrubber.

If it helps, the affected area is 3ftx3ft, and isn't really that much area... a cheaper solution possible?

how big is the area misterclub..you have given us the width and the depth but how tall?

I replied to your PM Misterclub, but I will state here that it can be done with a dayton but inlines are better becuase they simply run quieter and more efficiently/effectively move air.

Check your PM's.

The Eco Plus 4" 170cfm models can be had for $140 U.S. and the 6" 449cfm Eco Plus models can be had for $180.

Can Fan 6" 265cfm runs for about $180 U.S. and the 6" HO 440cfm runs for $225 U.S.

Vortex 4" 172cfm runs for 170 I think and the 6" 449cfm for $220.

Thanks for the response and messages, Jnugg. The area is about 6 or 7 feet tall. Not much area at all.

I am down to buying an inline if that is the only solution, the carbon scrubber., but do you think it would be a better out to get a cheap air filtration ionic dealy from wal*mart, for such a small area? I saw one for $20 I think. Or maybe moth balls or the can gel scent things? It just isnt that huge of an area, but would rather be over prepared than under prepared...

I've got the elicent 150A and the 100A both rigged up on the sis Diy scrubber and both pull enough (alone or in tandem) air and only get the odd whiff if I've got the fan turned done to low. Noise is the only issue. Air blowing continuosly into my air ducts. In the summer I might vent to the sewers and this issue will go away.

I wouldn't trust those things.Carbon filter, vaportek, thats the way to go.

The scrubber can be powered by a Dayton,I am just telling you to get an Inline becuase they are worth 5 times what a dayton or "blower" are worth. They are quieter, and move air more effectively....trust me dude, you'll be happy.

Well, being a poor student with little money, I had to cave and consider a blower per your suggestion that they WOULD do the job, just not as effectively. So, how loud are we talking anyway with the blowers? I wasn't able to locate any information on that.

If this doesn't work out I think that I'd prefer getting a vaportek over spending more on a fan for a carbon scrubber. I'd hate to have to tap into savings for that, though.

So how loud are blowers? Is it gonna sound like I'm mowing the lawn or something?
