Where to take clones from?

Is it my imagination, or do I get better plants from clones taken from the top of the plant vs the bottom?

Does it matter where on the plant that I take the clone?

You can take clones from where ever but ones from the top are going to be more vigorous when rooting and when they take root.

I think you are right. I learned this by accident when I took a few cuts from below the canopy and one from the top.

The lower ones grew spindly by comparison and didn't have nearly the same number of bud sites even though they were the same size when taken at clone.

The clone taken from the top grew more robust and very similar to the original plant I had from seed.

It sucks that I have to loose some of those big tops but if I want big plants, I need good clones.

Maybe I should make that one good plant the mother and just use it for all my top clones?

the best place is a healthy plant, the woody stems will have a slightly slower time but if every things healthy it really shouldnt matter that much, always take more than you need its easier to trash some than to wait for new ones. once you have your method down you should be getting close to 100% rate.

I have 99% rate 100% of the time now.

I didn't think it would matter either but I'm starting to think I was wrong.

I "think" I see that the higher on the plant you take the clone, the more vigorous the plant will grow. It really isn't even close.

Woody stems causing this? Well maybe, but all these were tender new shoots.

Sure, it's the same genetics but I think I see that the growth rate is different depending on where I take the clone from. Am I crazy?

Here are side by sides. The larger plant was a clone taken from the top of the mother plant and the smaller plant from the bottom.

imo its more of having popped roots first so its going to have a larger root mass thus grow faster. that doesnt mean the lower one wont be that size when the root masses are the same, it just means it takes longer of course to work roots through the woodier stems.how much time will vary depending on cloning method/hormones used/over under watered etc.

its not going to keep out growing the lower one it just has a head start. thats my experience

If you tune into HashChurch, last episode, they were talking about genetic drift and how/where you take clones could potentially have an effect.

My studies have shown me that there are more rooting hormones in the lower branches, and more auxins for vertical growth in the new growing tips. It also depends on how you clone. If you scarify the stem as opposed to leaving it alone, or whatever you do. What you clone in. Your light.... But I always take my clones from the bottom, the ones that will never become tops, so I'm not wasting my canopies.

But that's just my newbie two cents... Hope I helped.

Tips of all branches on one fine mother plant.

Once adept, then you can cut other parts from stem. Even had roots grow from leaves much the same way you take African violet starts.

Always take more cuttings than you need.

A growing tip from your cannabis plant 3" to 6" long with at least one leaf internode, two is better but not always possible. (A leaf internode is where the leaf connects to the stem).

Not sure about "always take my clones from the bottom"Sure, why not?

I agree, always take more than you need. Even when you get the hang of it, you'll be able to pick the healthiest ones to transplant. I always have had better stronger more vigorous plants when taking big cuts from the tops. You CAN propagate basically from any where, in the middle bottom so forth. There is a lot of great threads on here anout many topics. I find using the search function helps. Look for people that have stickies or that lots of people agree with. It doesn't mean that people that agree are always right. Use common sense and if it makes sense its probably your best option. Peace hope you have great success bud.
