Another basement grower here... we didn't build a room...just set the light up in the corner. exhaust fan running from the lights to an old chimney. We have three 1000 watters over ours right now.
The lovely thing about basements is how cool they are.

I usually grow 7 plants under each 1000 watt HPS and veg for no more than 6 weeks from clone. With a large producing strain you should get anywhere from 4 to 8 pounds, the later if you really know what your doing. I don't use a hood and position the plants around the HPS that is hung vertical. This way I find utilizes the most light and you can spin the plants around daily to get even distribution.

As for power, I would try to run off the dryers plug 240 volt and purchase a heavy duty timer from Home Depot. I think they run like 40 bucks or close to it. You'll have to set up your ballast for 240, but with instructions that can be found on the net you should be able to accomplish this very easily. I always worry powering 1000 watt HPS through wall wires. The wires in the wall are much thinner gage and are more likely to heat up and cause a fire. If you use the 240 the wires are much thicker gage and you won't have to worry about them heating up and causing a fire. Some old wires are brittle and the insulation could be cracked off with age. I have seen this many times with the renovations I have done. Just a scary thing to think about so I would go 240 so you can sleep well at night.

This is just my opinion and I am sure some will disagree. 120 isn't always dangerous, but from the old wiring I have seen in the past I always feel better with the dryer plug and I am sure it is safer even if marginally. Another bonus is regular outlets can be used for everything else and there is no worry of popping a fuse or worse.

Another thing I should mention is that I use 3.5 gallon pots and fill each one with Promix soiless mixture. It's okay to use on it's own, but you might prefer to mix in some perlite also and dolomite lime for good measure. The dolomite lime is not nessasary, but I have noticed marked improvement using it in the past. Another thing to keep in mind is ventilation. Make your ventilation as good as possible and use fans to immitate regular wind to strengthen the stocks.

I could go on for hours, but this is the basic set up I use. Usually I use more than 1 - 1000 watt HPS, but 1 is fine and you will be happy with the finished product. Hope this helps and good luck! Keep us posted on how it goes for you.

So, TGT, tell me more about this heavy duty timer. does it plug into a 240 socket but accept 120 plugs on the other end? is that the deal?

Also I found out that the basement outlets are on a 20w breaker, and the dryer one is much more, 30 or 50 I think.

If it's as easy as buying this timer to get power from the dryer socket, then I am in business!

I was hoping to do a sort of sea of green set up, but my cuttings are growing tall under the flouro tubes while my construction guy has been busy with other work.

I've got 23 cuttings in soil, in different stages of development. 6 just got put into the dirt, 11 have been in soil for 2 weeks (looking great!) and 7 others are the oldest aside from the mums, measuring in at 12 to 16 inches. also about 15 more in the humidity tent, either just cut or a couple weeks into initial rooting(some of these are likely to be culled, considering not all root perfectly or efficiently) I wanted them to be flowering already, or at least vegging under hps instead of the flouros...but what can I do, my friends got all the tools to put up the walls and it looks like he's coming tomorrow.

yipee.

and a local feral, just for kicks.

most are in 5.5 inch pots which are extra deep. since I had originally planned on flowering them while still short statured, I thought this would be a suitable size, though now a transplant may be necessary. some are also in 4 inch pots, just so I can take note of how their performance varies per container.

gonna sprout some Menage A'trois and red eyed brides upon moving the current cuttings under HPS.

By the way, thank you all for your input. The strength of this community played no small part in convincing me to have a go at this project.

The timer can be purchased at Home Depot and I believe it is called a t-140 timer. I'll have to double check though. What you will need is a board to mount the timer and then some receptical boxes. The power comes in from the dryer plug and goes directly into the timer and from the timer to the recepticals. A plug that fits the dryer plug can be found also at home depot. Then all that is needed to do is purchase a length of wire long enough to go from your dryer plug to the board mounted with timer and recepticle. I run 4 - 1000 watt HPS with my system. Below I have taken a picture of my timer set-up. If you want to make one up yourself I can post detailed pictures to show you how to wire it. This I believe is the best way to go. Let me know and I'll give you a list of what you need. I think in total you will need to pay about $100.00 for everything.

Thanks TGT, I could really use some sort of instructions. I went to the hardware store yesterday to get ventilation supplies and saw the timers you speak of. I held off on buying it and the other parts, because I can only afford so much at a time.

I ended up buying an 8 inch duct fan that moves 500 CFM, it was under 40 bucks!

I may end up being disappointed by this purchase, becase as they say "you get what you pay for", but thats more then enough CFM and is great considering my budget.

I also picked a variable fan speed controller, that looks like a dimmer switch for indoor lighting. I know it is designed, or at least marketed to be used with cieling fans like you would see in a typical home.

Has anyone attached a duct fan to one of these variable switches? will it work?

When you are ready to get your timer let me know and I will post or PM you instructions on how to do it yourself so you can save a few bucks. I'll take closeup pictures of mine so you can see. Pretty easy as the wires are colour coded.
Good luck and let me know when your ready if you still need info.
