where in California should I move to?

M

Hey all. I'm looking to set up shop in california for a year while I apply to various grad programs. Just kind of a year to hang, grow my herb in peace, etc.

Money is an issue: I'll have to live on about 25-30K during this year. I know that's pretty broke cally standards, but it's what I have.

Any recommendations for financially reasonably places to live for a young male looking to garden? I looked in Humboldt but all the landlords say "no grow clause in contract." They seem to know what's up...

Thanks in advance.

I've been looking to all I know is I'm avoiding San Diego and Oakland. I was looking in Oakland at their houses and there's a ton of holes in the walls there. I don't know why, I don't think I want to know but there are a lot of them.

Yeah most of Oakland is a shithole of epic proportions. San Diego just isn't for me; pretty conservative in many parts, expensive, and a lot of people don't speak english.

A lot of san diego local pigs claim to not recognize prop 215, either. Not exactly cannabis friendly. I would be all about humboldt but there is no god damn apartments listed on the net at a reasonable price that don't have a no grow clause.

Isn't weather kinda crappy around Humboldt since its pretty far north?
Theres a lot of gated communities in Cali it seems like they enjoy having a false sense of security. I hate dealing with condo laws and other b.s.

It's colder and foggy, yeah. I don't mind that so much though.

I agree.

If I were young again and had a year to burn with a little change in my pocket, I would be on a Surfing Mission throughout Mexico & South America. I would start at the Cannons in Mazatlan Mexico and finish my adventure at Santinho & Mocambique Brazil.

Good luck & have fun on whatever you do!

Try Oakland to be in the center of the community and meet people. Sure the city is shitty, but it is also awesome. It's not for all, but don't hate.

If you are planning on moving here to grow, then you shouldnt have to live off that budget for the whole year, just for the first three months. Remember to budget out all your equiptment and power bill, and you should be alright.

If I could live any place for my first year in Cali, I would check out Treasure Island. It's under the bay bridge, half way between Oakland and San Fran. Awesome view, island living, and POWER INCLUDED! That's sweet.

California is huge . What kind of weather do want to live in? I went skiing on Mt.Shasta last weekend "steep and deep and cheap" and there was snow patches in the town of Mt.Shasta city. Rain and fog in Humbolt . Sunshine and perfect weather in San Diego. I like the ideas about out of country where the weather is nice and the herb is cheap.

Nuff said.... Who would want to risk their house and property renting to someone involved in a (federal) criminal enterprise? That's right.....NO ONE! Get a grip! If you want to do your thing, then just do it.... on your own property! in another state!

Find yourself a nice cozy trailer park in Modesto... they'll love you there!

Better yet, move to Nevada... I hear they've got lots of cheap land and plenty of sunshine!

And nobody here says "cally".....well maybe in Oakland!

Yeah I was considering that general area...

I'm not really much of a traveler

Right on. Not my thing, but a lot of people I know have suggested stuff like that.

hehe, yeah. Seems expensive!

Can you point me in the general direction of affordable but somewhat safe sectors of Oakland? I keep getting conflicting info.

I don't care about weather, frankly, at this stage in my life. I'm not exactly wealthy as I mentioned, so it wouldn't be rational for me to be excluding places based on weather. I'm all about California for Prop 215.

I've got a grip, dude. The reality of the situation for many people, particularly young people, is that they don't have massive down payments and a lengthy credit history to satisfy lenders. I can't afford a house right now. I appreciate the perspective of landlords. No need to be a dick.

The cheaper areas of Oakland to search are East and West Oakland. East is the more violent area and further from downtown area. East is the ghetto, west is the hood; closer to downtown. Still, If ur planning on running more than 2k, plan to spend more on electricity than rent. Then again, if ur not, You'll never make it a year in Oakland on that budget. Oaksterdam University is a good place to start for info.

Sacramento? Anyone?

Some good info in this thread. I'm coming this summer also, like it or not. Bringing my own job, income, and another job with me, so no worries Merman.

But what is this about making it with 2k in lights and the bank for the bills for a year? lol Dude, that would just be FUN to run 2k in lights, sign me up.

do you think a 2 bedroom is possible in Oakland for under a K a month in rent?

I'm not looking to become pablo francisco. Just maybe a little here and there dropped off to the clubs when it gets tight. I'm looking for a legit job in a safe part of town. I'm much more concerned with living in a terrible/shady neighborhood and getting shot than I am making tons of money selling to clubs.
