You're right. Usually the ruby's dominate the feeders.
I only saw the ones with the iridescent green-backs & grey's.
That guy has got to be nutzoid or something...
If those hummers had felt intimidated by him blinking his eyes, those little birds woulda had that guys eyeballs laying on the porch....
and there would have been little he could have done to have stopped it in time...
buddy used to hang a little feeder from the bill of his hat. crazy little fuckers would fly between it & his face...
good year here in the desert for hummers this year. Little guys buzzing around the backyard the last few days.
One was feeding at a aloe vera flower and another came over and flared his tail and buzzed him from about a foot away. the one feeding took off, and the tail flaring guy took over feeding on his flower.
never saw that before.

saw a male rubythroated day before yesterday. I have read that the males come up first, stake out a territory, then head back south to meet the ladies headed north to escort them home. time to fill my feeders I guess...
hummingbirds don't usually show up around here until May, and then stay 'til about Oct..
But we have tons of other birds in my yard in the woods..
Redheaded and Redbreasted woodpeckers are in my yard all year and a couple weeks ago we had 2 visits
from the Piliated Woodpecker who lives in the woods, about 100 yards away from the house..(I hear him all the time)
He was on a tree just outside my window and he was HUGE, about 15 inches tall... All black with a fiery red head...
But we have tons of other birds in my yard in the woods..

I seen a Redheaded, Doublebreasted, BedThrasher, the other day.
oooh, the doublebreasted bedthrasher is one of my favorites! with my eyesight, and at my age, I don't see them as often as I used to...
Always have to watch for the D.B bedthrasher, red headed or otherwise.
I use to put suet out on the front porch for the pileated woodpeckers at the last place I lived, got a lot of good pics I should dig up. Impressive birds, they seem a little prehistoric somehow, like a little raptor. Luckily they are also at the new place and the suet is out but no takers yet.
Hated to leave the old hummers at the last place but they are showing up strong with several different kinds. Some of them are brawlers, twice I've seen a pair on the ground briefly fighting. Lots of mid air jabs with beaks when fighting.They make an audible "thwap" when they hit each other mid air. I've found two dead ones and one might of hit a window but the other was too far away, just figured he was killed by another hummer.

some species on west coast do not migrate. have seen pix of a dozen or so crammed into bluebird nesting boxes for warmth at night in cold weather. found a picture on 'net of hummers feeding at a heated feeder (light bulb keeping solution from freezing).

I was looking for a bird thread.
I got 6 birds trained to sleep about 10 feet off the ground.
They are back outside with the predators.
I hope a few of them (the birds) start sitting on the eggs.
There's one tiny mother bird, about the size of a Quail, that takes on this burden.
And there's one heavier bird who doesn't fly so well, she sleeps in the garage.

Called "Anna's" hummingbird's after a member of the French court that never got to see one.
They stay all year around, and they deliver nonstop entertainment.
Had one that was stayed on my porch as the temp dropped below freezing. The bird fell to the ground. Figuring it a goner, scooped him up and put him in the sun, the bird flew the coop.
I keep a couple feeders going, and the numbers sure do very. At times the population
is so dense that they feed 3 layers deep. When they are like that, I go through about a quart every two days. Right now, that lasts about a week.
They stay all year around, and they deliver nonstop entertainment.

Birds outdoors. New roost 9 or 10 feet off the ground.
Hopefully, mountain lion resistant.
Put some debris in front of the roost, so if a predator tries to climb up, they just get a clawfull of metal mesh.
The small Bantam rooster is on the far left, sitting down.
The smaller black Silkie rooster is on the far right.
The 6 birds that can fly all roost together.
The Cornish cross, a little heavy to fly, finds hiding places at ground level in the garage.
I moved the pet food out of the garage. After walking in there and coming face to tail with a skunk checking out the food goodies. Didn't get sprayed but still !!

There was a baby bird in the driveway this morning.
Brought it inside, put it in a box with some hay and some bread wetted with water, next to the indoor Cannabis cat. In the past he has been a great nurturer of baby birds.
Now I can't find the baby bird. I'm not sure if it started feeling better and jumped out of the cage to start exploring the living room.
Or did the Cannabis cat eat the little baby bird ?
So now there's a Baby Bird hunt going on.
