When to say Stop?

A hypothetical question:

Lets suppose that you were a commercial grower. You've been in business for several years and had an excellent system all dialed in and secure. You have always kept your mouth shut and only sold to one person who you trust. You have also made a sizable amount of money. Not enough to live the rest of your life on, but at least the next ten years. Now when all these things are just rolling along, would you tell yourself to quit? I believe the saying: "The unexpected has ruined the best laid plans of mice and men". When to say STOP!?

quitting while ur ahead isn't the same as quitting ;)

it really is up to you bro...i would say it depends on where ur located, mostly...if ur in cali i think u could continue within the med guidelines and still do pretty well...if ur in an area that takes a dim view of bud then i would recommend relocating to cali and enjoying what you have been doing on a basis that is, for most intents and purposes, pretty legal...

the key is cleaning and protecting the nut u have risked so much for but i'm sure ur aware of that...congrats on ur prudence and success thus far :canabis:

Invest it somehow. Did you know if you build your own home and then sell it after 2 years, and repeat that two more times (total 3 builds) you can build and own your next home straight up, zero mortgage?

that would be TOUGH these days...

seems logical though in a good market

I agree with bounty29, Invest it somehow to make you even more money. Like lilwayne said, the house idea is a good one, but the market just isnt there these days.

when to stop...dont know?...but after hearing about busts i feel there biggest mistake was to have all that hard earned cash in the same place as the grow and to loose it all.HH. =]-~

The question here is: does that person think he can keep going like he's going for the next 10 years without incident?

Now, if he's been doing fine for the last several years, I don't see why not. No security leaks, no close calls etc he could probably keep going for decades.

The problem is when you introduce new factors into the plan: a girlfriend/wife, kids, a new partner, etc.

Any of those can bring added risks (girlfriend gets pissed and tells on you, kids need a babysitter, partner gets busted and rats on you, anyone of the above tells other people who then tell the police, etc) that can bring his op down.

The odds that he'll be brought down by accident (fire, random police investigation) are slim to none, like millions to one. It's very very hard for police to find out you're growing if you're stealthy, that's why most busts happen because of snitches...

Then again, if one has a really good feeling that it's time to get out, I'd say follow your intuition. 'Always trust your gut' is a saying that has some truth to it...

The questions is not so black and white there are many things you can do. For instance you could always scale way down and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Or you could quit now and enjoy what you have earned, you can always get started back up again. Mistakes and curiosity are what will get you if you are being safe about things. I am by no means commercial but I would think taking a break in general will open your eyes to your options. I would wrap things up for now and see how you feel and go from there, follow your gut.

If this hypothetical commercial grower has a substantial amount of cash or assets, and a clear enough head to worry about ongoing risks, it seems like a good idea to plan for the worst. Aside from the obvious, I would worry about asset forfeiture associated with a bust. Many, many good tips on this are scattered though the almost-dead-then-renamed thread 'Massive Outdoor Grow'

Its a great time to build a house but not such a good time to sell. The price of materials are down and so is the price of labor because theres not alot to build. Do as much as you can yourself and you could come out of it great! By the time you get it done the economy could change for the best ... if not then live in it till things swing the other direction

I agree with Babba, real estate is definitely a buyers market right now. Ultimately, IMHO, your hypothetical grower would have to ask himself 2 questions: How screwed am I if I take a bust? and How screwed am I if I stop growing for profit?

There's no universal answer but you have to trust your gut. I've been growing for 35 years and have never even been questioned about it, so I've been doing something right. Understand that some paranoia is normal and helpful, keeps you on your toes. Too much paranoia creates its own problems. It's important, at least for me, to keep my smoking way down, especially when harvest is getting close.

For about 10 years I did part-time working doing tower climbing on big communications towers because the pay was awesome. Sometimes I'd clear 5K for a morning's job. On the other hand, in the course of almost every job, at some point a little voice would say "you've been up on this tower long enough for today, it's time to get down." I always listened to that message and I'm still alive to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

My suggestion is take a weekend and go on a "retreat" to a hot springs or other favorite quiet spot and just listen to your heart. If you think you're pushing your luck you probably are.

risk/reward...if you can show where all of your assets came from totally separate from a grow you obviously have less to worry about so keep rollin. if the pigs can tie your assets to a grow then i'd think about it harder.

location matters too. cali isn't bad with forfeitures or first offense sentences.
