For new/newer - usually the last quarter of the year

For used - anytime of the year except tax refund time (self explanitory)

I usually go car shopping just around the time the new model years are shipping. Be warned, though. Some car dealerships shy away from "cash" deals. I've had two dealerships turn down a sale because I was unwilling to finance the car.

I use to sell cars and I know that you will get your best deals on the last selling day of the month. The dealership usually has a quota to meet and if they are behind which they usually are they really start giving away good deals on the last day to meet those goals.

December 31, 2 hours before closing. Otherwise last quarter of the year, on the last day of the month. I spent too many years being a lot lizard.

Last day of the month, come early and walk away, come back 2-3 hours before close. Don't jerk anyone around at the end of the month. If you want to negotiate like a tough guy, be prepared to pull the trigger. LOL, sorry, was a 'on the strip' carguy for too long. Seriously, though don't shop for a price, shop for a car. Ask yourself before you really negotiate, "Am I prepared to buy if the price is right?" If not, don't bother because you will be wasting the salesperson's time, and he in turn will waste your time by letting you leave with an un-attainable price. Good luck

P.S. Offer them dealer cost minus ALL rebates. Usually won't make this deal, but on the last day(s) of the month/quarter they'll take it.

end of the year. always buy the previous year model and demand your own terms. you need to know what is the lowest feasible price for everything that you want including extended warranty and pre-paid mantenance. then call and visit different dealers and tell them straight up: this is what i will pay. do you want to sell this car or not? i gaurantee that someone will bite. there is a dealer out there that has your car and NEEDS to sell it. they will make that deal.
for example in november 2001 i bought two toyotas: a 2000 camry and a 2000 4runner at the same time. i said i will pay invoice, i want the factory cash back ($1500 each) and i want the factory financing, pre-paid mantenance, extended warranty.
i paid invoice, got my cash back towards the down, paid dirt cheap for the ext warr and pre-paid mantenence($1500 each).
if they did not do it, someone else will. i was just out shopping for a 2008 pathfinder and had a sweet deal going, but i was unable to sell my 4runner so i just kept it.
hope that helps.

never!

buy an old cluncker you can work on! she'll cost you 1 grand in running order (should)

an old ford or chevy will do nicely

these new cars cost a fortune and half the time you cant even do the required maintenance youself!!!! why pay them 1,000's of dollars when u can do the work yourself for a cheap part down at NAPA or some other part store.

working on cars is NOT that hard, not that i am mechanic joe but i would never buy a new car no matter for shiny the plastic/fiber glass is. someone will fender bend you and then u have to take it in to the shop because your whole REAR END fell off!

if that same person rear ended you in the good old ford or chevy, you would merely turn to your padre and say ' u feel sumthin?' while u jump down from your truck you merely realize that stupid bitches kia just bust itself all up and your bumper has a bit of character to it

"remember that one time that stupid bitch put that ding on my bumper!?? probally costed her 3,000"

my 2 cents lol

car buying tips

car buying tips

most of what is said here has some merits.. but in general.. ANYTIME is a good time to buy a car!!

A dealership makes much much much more money on service and is usually in the red on the sales side of a business. That's why you always always have the buying power with cars. Unless the car is highly sought in a limited amount.. dealers will cave on anything and everything.

Just bought a new car two days ago 08 civic si only can find one per dealer usually.. got mine for just a nickel over invoice. It's just all in not caving to the BS they will spew about how hard it is to get and la dee da.. (trust me they don't believe that crap either) It's all just metal and plastic.

-Unless your buying a special model or at a specific price dealership (think saturn or scion) the dealer Will not only work with you.. but you should be talking about a several hundred over invoice deal.

-Pricing is easy.. go to Edmunds.com.. price wi/ options.. then find how much (TMV) the car is going for in your area.

-Go into the dealer you are giong to want to have service done at (this is a very important and crucial step that cheap tight wads forget.. till there car breaks down) And drive the vehicle you want.

-let them discount the car.. and push you into a chair.. at this point they will ask what it will take to get you driving it. Then the hard part... just tell them "$100 over invoice" ... hah.. they'll come back with something else.. and you stick to your guns.

-if you don't get the car at your tmv price.. just leave and they'll call in about ONE hour.

- don't sign anything till you see financing offers based on your credit.. and if everything's kosher... go for it.

But Most of the stuff you read here is bullshit.. sorry but I sold cars and was a manager of service.. Like say.. buying an 07 right now seems like a good idea.. but your buying a product that has already been devalued thousands of dollars from sticker.

if a 07 car is not sold by 12/31/07 it will be a USED car whether it has been titled or not on 1/1/08.. and will only get used financing. this has commonly been the reason why last quarter was the best time to shop... but now a days everyone buys cars discounted.... so getting an 08 last quarter of 07 for the same price or within even a 1000 makes much more sense.

and you guys with the old clunkers.... come on :) your kiling me. There is a reason why they don't make trucks and cars like they used to.... because they are horrible for the envirment, less safe, barely cheaper and uncomfortable. with that said I own one.. but trying to compare a snow rat vehicle to a new small comfortable happy car is a joke... right?

With all do respect Alaska,

if you polled the US population..

i would guarantee that most would not have the tools/knowledge to fix a vehicle...

including myself...although i would LOVE to have the tools/knowledge

Yup...most are correct

The end of the month is the best time..September is when the new models roll out.

Took me 8 hours one time to get a new Car once...I bought the last year's model and off came about $5,000 from the cost if it was brand new. Had a good Sport package, stiffer springs, koni's,swaybar.I think it was $10,200 instead of $15,500.

It pulls over 1 G in corners ..beats the Corvettes !!

And it's a Dodge :)

On yea...the dealer sucked Big time !!!!! I made them try to paint the whole car cuz they left big swirling spider marks on the paint which is caused by rubbing into the paint with dust instead of water...Do this for 1.5 years on a dealers lot and they can fuck up the paint job.I buy the car, take it home, take it back 2 days later for them to fix a dent on the fender and paint the WHOLE car which was written on the contract. They took my car for one whole month ?? and I got my car back with just the dent fixed but the car itself wasn't painted.

So I made them install the $600.00 car alarm back on the car which was taken off when I bought the car.

One year later...Under new management and I went back and still the same old people still working there. They Still Suck Monkey Balls. When I buy a new one,I'm driving Up NoRTH 550 miles away from that shithead dealer and town

just wanted to say that by saying "old clunker" i am just referring to an older model vehicle, not necessarily a beater.

not really, cars made now days dont last as long as older vehicles, much harder to service and in my opinion no matter how your plastic's molded ITS STILL PLASTIC

and about being safer, i would rather be in a truck made of steel rather then one of plastic.

dont mean to troll though i'll leave ya'll to ur thread

Like others have said, buy towards the end of the month because salesmen have to meet their quota, and buy towards the end of the year for New Years/Christmas sale. If you like your cars new, you could usually get a couple thousand dollars off for last years model. Always check online first to see if there are any appliable discounts or rebates or deals in your state for the model you're interested in. Find the car's invoice price or dealer's cost online. Some dealerships have "online departments" where you could get a quote online without much of the hassle. Send these to multiple dealerships first before you visit anywhere and use the quotes you get as a basis for negotiations. Never buy those extra appliances from the dealership like alarm systems, etc. Those are always a guaranteed rip-off.

Honestly, you know how new cars lose half their value the moment you take them off the dealership... it just makes financial sense to just buy used cars...

I would never buy a new car. No matter how you cut it, you lose money. Pay cash, lose cash. Finance same deal. Buy a new car if you plan on keeping it for ever (7+ years) A couple year old car is where it's at. Just MHO.
