when do you know your plant is not a seedling anymore and enters Veg

When do you know your seedling is not a seedling anymore and enters the VEG stage . The reason i ask is my wife threw out my logs so no i dont know exactly how old from seed my plants are and i dont want to over fertilized them and i want to top them . they are about 6 inch tall , very squat and bushy. they had some nute issues with yellow tips and spots and i found out they needed to be flushed because the ppm was too high and the ppm needed to be lowered , and ph adjusted a bit lower. since i flushed 2 days ago they grew atleast 2-3 inches more . but i still need to resume nutes tomorrow and soon i need to top them , when do i top them .

#1 so when do i say they are veg plants.

#2 when do i top them .

Thanks

I really don't understand your question. There are only 2 stages in a plants life, veg and bloom. Veg starts at sprout and ends after the strech. So your plants have always been in the veg stage. I consider a plant to be a seedling until it is mature enough to reproduce.

You can top them anytime you want but I prefere lst over topping. There is less stress and faster growth.

Plants are in veg when they get their first real set of leaves, ones after the seedling leaves. They then stay in a vegetative state till nature or indoors the daylight is cut back to approx 12/12 (Depending on strain and autoflowering). They then go to into a flowing state. If you asking how long before you can flower it is best to wait till you see pre-flowers in the nodes of the plant.

A seedling is an immature plant, a plant that hasn't reached sexual maturity. You can still veg a seedling. You can even flower a seedling to force it in to sexual maturity (where the term 'force flowering' comes from). It's really just a term to differentiate seed plants from cuttings/clones wouldn't get too hung up on it.

I call anything that hasn't been put into flower a seedling personally but basically if you don't see pistils at nodes and alternate branching and you grew the plant from seed then it's a seedling.

Your plants are in veg when you say they are (as in what light cycle you put them on).

You can top from the 4th node without problems.

The cotyledon leaves...

This hits the spot for me.....

I think the best way to look at when a seedling stops being a seedling is when it stops being a seed embryo and begins photosynthysis....

this is generally when the first leaves come in....

But don't they begin photosynthesis as soon as the seed opens? The green colour of the cotyledon leaves comes from photosynthesis. Cotyledons are the very first leaves that come from the seed (the little round ones) not the first proper set of leaves.

I think technically you're right though that the veg stage starts after the cotyledons.

i count veg as when the first 3 blade leafs appear (thanks Blimey)- but its just down to personal choice.

topping - with plants from seed you need to leave at least 4 pairs of nodes/leafs or otherwise you risk stunting the plant, and when you top you should go down to a mature set of leafs rather than try to take a tiny bit from the growing tip.

It may have to do with the fact that the plant is still living mostly on seed stored energy for a while after it greens up....

I suppose you could make a case for its a seedling until the cotyledons dry up.....

I generally feed when the first set of leaves are in..... thats why its a convenient place for me to say its no longer a seedling.....

VG nailed it. there is nothing complicated about this question.
First set of real leaves = veg
4+ nodes = top

Yeah somewhere along the line I got mixed up with botany, which we're talking here, and what I do in my garden :tiphat:

I totally agree this isn't a complicated question lol

When do I flower???
In a few weeks when the alternating phyllotaxy starts, it's time to flower. That's if you have the head room for plants that large.

Thanks for everyones imput. The reason why i asked is im using Advanced nutes and they have a feeding mix chart that is for seeding and veg . my plants are at least 6 inch high and i already had a issue with my ppm being to high and burning the plants tips , but i was only using the nutes for seedling stage . when it is in the veg stage on chart the PPm is way higher . so im wondering why i already had a issue with the ppm at around 500ppm being to high for th stage my plants are at . I also had a ph issue being alittle to high . i set it at 6.0 and it should have been 5.8 so maybe i was seeing yellow tips on my plants not because it was over fert(ppm to high )but because my ph was off and cause a lockout issue ? am i making an sense ? Or am i confusing as hell.. I am so new at this i dont always know how to talk the talk yet .

Thanks for all the imput !

What are you growing in?? Coco, peat, rockwool? Advanced nutes seem to be complicated, there are much simpler nute regiments to use.

I use the coty's as seedling sign, when they wither, it's not a seedling anymore...

I don't like to top until after 6 sets of true leaves have grown, then I top back down to 4 sets...

You can top branches back to 4 as well - top twice, you get a bushy plant w/ lotsa bud sites...

Good luck...

Nute bottle proportions are not based on plant health. They are based on how much abuse the plant can take before bursting into flame. The faster you waste food, the faster you need to replace it. Start at 1/2 the bottles rec and see what happens.

No pics, and you haven't mentioned method but, pH 6.0 as "high" sounds like hydro. No one number allows absorption of all nutes and thus, guarantees lockout. You need pH to swing. 5.8-6.0 is too high and narrow a swing. Drop the low end at least to 5.5 (many will argue for 5.2)

i regret using advanced nute , it is tuff and very $$$ . But i have it now and have to deal with it atleast for this run

I am using a soiless called sunshine mix advance#4. so it has coco ,peat ,perliet and more .. I started off with wrong ph of 6.3-6.4 and then i was told to lower it to 6.0 and then told to lower it again to 5.8 after i had yellow tips and other issues. so i flushed with plain 5.8 water becuase of a possible burn issue, my ph was 6.0 at the time and ppm around 510ppm I was told by a grower at a hydro store to lower my ph and lower my ppm to around 250( he said ppm510 was too high for 6 inch tall plants at maybe 5-6 weeks from seed) then every week after raise ppm 75 more each week. but im just not sure if my ppm is too high, too low or if my ph was the culprit of my yellow tips( ph causing a lock out issue). That is why i ask when is a seeding is a veg plant . then maybe i would know what my ppm should be at this stage . but maybe its a worthless question and im just not sure about ppm and what the ppm should be and when it should be raised.. I guess im just plain confused.

Thank you
