when crossing 2 autos wouldnt the recessive genes make non autos in the f1's

Easy answer,

When crossing 2 varieties together that share a Recessive trait that is dominant in each variety then your resulting offspring will have a Dominant recessive trait aswell.

just because it is recessive when crossed in to a NON AF parent, doesnt mean it can't become dominant.
