When a State Becomes Legal

Hey everybody! I’m just doing some thinking about the future of cannabis in my state and thought I’d ask a few questions I have from others in Legal states.

When a state first becomes legalized, and markets are opening, and regulations put in place, for a person who wants to brand, and create a product for sale, where do you go to get lab tested? Obviously it’s been illegal this whole time, so there aren’t any dedicated labs to cannabis yet.

In the beginning, how do you go about getting product brand out there? I’m just thinking of ideas I have for a brand and product when and if legalization ever comes to my state.

Would love to hear from those in legal states who have seen the branded products in dispensaries etc

I have watched Colorado go legal Medical -- Rec

Most growers hire a "Compliance Specialist" to deal with the massive amount of regulations and hoops to jump tru. It is literally a full time job keeping up on that stuff and it changes often.

Every state is different that is how it is in Colorado.

I get what you’re saying. I’m more asking where does that person go initially to get product tested for sale? Do independent labs that once did pharmaceuticals all of a sudden start testing cannabis?

In Massachusetts for recreational cannabis it's going to be the same labs that exist now to test medical cannabis

Not sure, each state is different but generally you can't just take stuff in for sale. It is an entire process "seed to sale" they track and monitor all clones, plants, harvest, waste, on and on....... so their is a lot of hoops before you even get to the testing phase in most states.

When Med was first legal in Colorado growers could just sell to the dispensaries for a short period of time, before massive regulations came into play. Growers would walk into dispensaries with back packs and duffel bags, go in the back and sell a few units.

Never know but if their on no "seed to sell" regs they will probably not require testing.

before you can use a certified lab in Colorado, you must be licensed. No license means no testing.


Previous to applying for a license you oughta have all your ducks in a row.


and capitol... you need lots of capitol to get started because licenses can be prohibitively expensive.
