Whats Wrong With This Picture

Ok. Im using Miracle Grow potting soil with moisture control ( cant under or over water supposedly ) 21-7-14

No Nutes

Tap water, that goes through a water softener ( might be why plant is having problems.. salt = acidic )

Temps run around 78 degrees F with light on mid to upper 60's with light off

Alot of bigger leaves have brown spots.

Also noticed a "slime" trail around the inside of the pot just on top of the soil, almost looks like slug trails.

cannot use softened water as it swappes cal/mag for sodium. Posion for
plants.

MG is bunk, and I think your best bet is to repot into some peat mixed with a little lime and some pearlite. The MG likely has time-release ferts that cannot be flushes, and f-that mositure control. You want to have wet/dry cycles.

hrm ok. ill have to get the water from the outside tap. which isnt soft water. its hard water.

and yeah I get a check on the first. the MG just seemed like a good idea, but im new to all this so didnt know

Looks like nutrient lockout causing problems, the yellowing and upward curling usually say magnesium deficiency.. you need to find out the ph of the water you are watering with,, too low and the plant will not uptake certain nutrients, likewise if it is too high.. seriously check the ph of your tap, before you go looking at individual nute deficiencies, cause if the waters ph isoff, it doesn't matter.. when you know you are using the correct ph water(5.8-6.2 in my opinion) then you can begin to diagnose the individual lockout or deficiency..

and like the good doctor mentioned, softened water is a no-no :)

Thanks that helps alot. from the looks of the guide, and what you guys have said. looks like combination of soft water and Mn deficiency

RO water is best (IMO), or 5-/50 mix with the tap. My tap has cloramine which does not evaporate. I hear there are ways to remove like carbon filter, or to add checm like peroxide that convert the cloramine.

I went with a RO unit, and the ladies and I share its output to great health. To my RO water I add 2 ml cal/mag per G along with 1/16 t spoon/G epson salt to help buffer PH and add back what is good in nature that the ro had to remove along with what was bunk. That brings my base up to about 100 ppm and a ph of around 6.5.

And seriously, I know its hard to find non-mg stuff. But If you go to a nursery you can get a bale of spagnum peat pretty cheap. Get some chunky perlite (non MG is possible), and some garden lime. I use 2 t Lime per galon. Mix it up about 60/40 peat/perlite. Draines well and an inert media you can have fun with and easy to obtain with non-hydro.

That said, I switched to coco and will never go back, but that is another story. Rember, flushing in MG can make it worse due to time release fert. Transplant as per above, very light nute (an inert media), then plain pf water until you see recovery. PH to 6.0-6.3.

Do you water with softened water?

Do you use MG moisture control?

I do not need much info for # 1. There may be other issues, but why not start with the obvious?

Yeah, I guess I should have first tried to clarify what the ph of his salt water was. ;)

Meanwhile the details are still lacking, and unlike you I feel i've provided specific advice that will certainly help, and which poses little risk to both his plant and wallet..

So far your advice seems to be "keep watering with salt while you go back and fill out the sick plant questionare."

That strikes me as odd, but whatever.

Best of luck OP, I hope you get those details in, I'm out.

Ok I got a pH tester for free. the PH looks to be ( after flushing with non-softened water ) about 6.5 to 7.0 in that area

Plant looks better too.

I also found a little friend that was curious to see. looked like a clear tiny worm, could see its innards.
