Whats wrong with germing seeds under 600watts?

A little late, you probably got this same exact response. More than CFL's or simple flouros is really over kill. I use a dual tube flouro for the first 2 wks of life and it saves $$ on electricity. Using HIDS for the first week life wont really make much of a difference if any.

There's no way you're going to get the results you would from a 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight with the lamps 1/2 inch above the tops,it doesnt matter how cool they run either.Nothing particularly wrong with it except its a waste of electricity and you'd get better results with a shoplight

wait, i read your post wrong initially.. are you saying that you think i would get better results with a flouresent/cfl over an hid in pure growth?

btw, i forgot to mention that i am using the 600 to veg other plants as well.. i have the seedlings raised up to the light now about 4 inches away from the glass

Exactly what i was thinking, because theres no way in hell a fluro will give better results. I've Put fluros less than an inch from the top of the plants, and some of them would still stretch towards the light. With my 1000w right now, i have the light 2.5 feet away because they are very young, and no signs of stretching, they love the light.

BTW frozen, i'm assuming your light is aircooled to keep the 600 that close? My 1000w is air cooled as well, and i can keep my light about 4 inches away as well. I can touch the glass on the reflector which is about 2 inches from the bulb and not get burnt.
