I had a similar situation.... My dog bit someone & got taken by the police and put in their kennels for 7months while I went through the courts to get him back, he was on death row...well the doggie equivalent...

When the police came with the warrant for his arrest, I told him to be a good boy & I will see him soon, I gave him a big hug and a kiss then took him to the police van...

7months later when he walked into my flat again....he went straight to his bed and curled up for a nap, just as he would after a long walk

There was a time not long ago, you could have buried the sheriff and no one would have cared. We've got two big family farms in the line, one Civil War era and I can't ever imagine asking for another man's dog, especially at his home.
