Whats Best Soil

undefined I'am now germinating some nirvana papaya seeds and in the past I have had trouble with my soil. I plan on putting them straight into a small pot and then under the light once the tap root is long enough. I was wondering what would be the best soil to put them into and where to get it here in east cost of the US. :abduct:

In the germinating 1st pots I usually mix 50% seedling starter soilless mix with 25% worm castings and 25% perlite. I look for great drainage at that stage. You dont want a barky mix or added nutes yet. I use PRO- MIX some thats what works for me. GL

for starting seeds you dont want to add anything in the way of ferts (well worm castings arent too bad). you could burn tender seedlings

try a seed starting mix amended with perlite for good drainage then transplant into a fortified soil when they are old enough. i usually do this by 2 weeks old

jiffy mix is available anywhere that has a garden section.
promix is a good mix that is readily available on the east coast.

something else i liked using when i was back east was "chesapeake blue" though i'm not sure if it will be available in your area.

ill use fox farms ocean forest soil from seedling til harvest and it works great for me. It has lots of diferent kinds of things in it from the ocean and forest that are all organic and gives your plants great nutrients. Ive never had a problem with this soil burning my seedling. All of my plants seem to love this soil, but it is a bit pricey.... $20 bucks a bag (40 lbs i believe? Its the big size bag) at the local hydro store. Try it out, ims ure you'll love it.

im not to experienced growing, this is only my second maybe third attempt at it, but by far my best. and i honestly think it has to do with the Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil that i mixed with extra perlite. ive only added nutes (Fox Farm Grow Big and Superthrive) 4 times. i dont know if thats too little or what, but my plants arent showing any signs of letting up. :)
when i flower, tho, im not sure if i should add bone meal, what do you all do?

g'day everyone.. :joint:

I'm going to have to drive an hour to find the pro mix. From what I hear on these forums it will be a small price to pay....

I like pro mix.. sometimes I add to it, sometimes I use it straight out the bale.. If pro mix isnt avail close and perlite, vermiculite, perlite, moss and limestone are, mix together your own...

The foxfarm ocean forest is the bomb there is alot of good ingredients in it i don't add perilite or coir to it and it works great but I am switching to larger containers and I am going to add some extra perilite or some coir and my yields should improve after that .the fox farm ocean forest soil is already ph adjusted for you and the ph does not fluctuate in it that much I think thats because of the oyster shell in it

deadheaDohio is dead right! That ocean forest potting soil in blue bag with worm castingseaweed, bat guano, fish.limestone, forest soil compost etc in it already will cost ya a pretty penny 20-30$ abag fox farm soil mix in the red bag is 15.95 a bag its good 2 imho though but it's the best hydrostore dirt imho foxfarm or promix bale always mix perlite & vermic blood /bone meal most marijuana plants like (light) airy soil to cut down on price(expand the amount of soil) mix in wal mart continuous feed dirt,MG coconutcoir dirt, or jungle growth organic potting mix or pro mix.Good Luck ;)

ff ocean forest is a rips off.

if all that ocean crap is your gig than get a bail of promix or sunshine mix, get a bag of fox farms marine cuisine soil amendment and some extra perlite and castings and BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Foxfarm Oceanforest soil is the best. You do not need any nutes for the first 2 weeks at all. I do not add perlite or any other medium to the soil and I have great results.

Everyone is going to have a different view on this one.If you are a small space grower then you can use one of the specialty soils like the one listed above. If you have a bigger garden you will need something in bigger quanities that is affordable to use which makes the specialty soils impractical.

I use a simple mix of Pro-Mix BX and add Wiggle Worm worm castings(pure castings)(15 lbs.per bale for growth and 30 lbs. per bale for flowering) and I always add a bag of perlite for extra drainage.Very simple yet extremely effective.I add my organic ammendments through waterings with Original Pure Blend which is like an organic syrup. This is easier for me on the scale i grow to use water in organics. The worm castings are the best thing for flavor you will ever find so that is taken care of from the start. It's also one of the main ingredient( 3rd or 4th highest percentage) in the Original Pure Blend also.
I use Flora Nova Products with my pure blend in grow and at least half way through flower when the Pure Blend takes over alone to finish up with good flavor/odor.The use of the Pure Blend enables me to use my nutrient at about 1/5 strenth.
You can check my gallery for health of plants with this system.
Hope that might help a little.
Take care and be safe...................................CC

i use the exact same cap crip. just too damn simple.

greenthumb, do you know what marine cuisine is?? its all the same additives in ocean forest. just add to promix and you get instant ff ocean forest for a tiny percent of the cost.

but imo promix, perlite, and castings is screw up proof. just too easy. supplying nutrients through water is the ticket.

I agree allmanbro

I agree allmanbro

Once you get your water in nutrients dialed in you are set, just take away 1/3 to 1/2 for light feeding sativas and add a little more for the heavy feeders.
The real key is the awesome consistancy of the Pro-Mix and they addition of Worm Castings, they rule!!!

Pro-Mix also has their product with Micorriazae already in the mix :yummy: :canabis: !!!!!It is in an opposite colored bag/wrap.It's grey with Black writing instead of Black packageing with the grey writing.I was getting it for the same price for about a year but now it has gone up some.Oh well it was nice while it lasted, and yes i spend a little extra for the benefit.
Take care all.........................................CC

Here's a pic of Super Worm,,he's coming to a planter near you!!!! :biglaugh:
