I would be curious who the last tenant was...sometimes mail continues to come in their name ..a records check aint hard to do from there...landlords gen do a check of their prop when tenants move out..so you can bet they know..something is fishy or ya hit the lottery...

Not a legal State, He never grew B4 this,,, I'm leaving this alone.
Resinryder made some Gr8 points. Given these facts, I think I might write the landlord an Email telling Him I was concerned about lighting a fire in the FP cause there's some jankey shit going on in the attic with the chimney. Don't even let on that He suspects that it was an illegal grow room. The email is evidence that Your Friend made the landlord aware of His concern's. Afterall it IS a CYA World We live in.

Simple. Hey landlord, we were going to put some of our stuff up in the attic and saw some type of alterations. After we inspected it further, we found that someone had tied something into the chimney. We need you to check it out because we DON'T WANT TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES.
It is easier to cover your ass now than it will ever be to prove you didn't cause the damage yourself later on. He can prove the damage is there and say it wasn't before you moved in because he inspected the house before you moved in, than it will be for you to prove you didn't do it later on.
