What tool to use for cutting?

will a 12v drill have enough power for a hole saw to cut through a wooden cab? I think I am going to go with the black and decker 4amp jigsaw and I am going to order a set of hole saws on that website. I think its rediculous paying $20 for just 1 hole saw at home depot.

Foil, the greater the thickness of material and diameter of the hole increases the need for a more powerful drill motor. Battery powered tools have their place, "light duty" applications work best. Try putting a 3/8" hole through a 3/8" piece of steel with a 3/8" battery powered drill motor. It will seize up in the work more often than not. I have a 7.2V Makita that I bought for my cabinet shop back in the late 70's, it still works like a champ (for drilling pilot holes and screwing screws in hinges and pulls).

I wouldn't recommend hole saws for the occasional user. Too easy to get it stuck and get whacked/pinched, especially with the bigger (4-6") saws. They certainly have their place, but I think either the jigsaw or rotozip is more suited and more versatile. I've been using hole saws most of my adult life, but get into a 6" and get it wedged while it's chucked in a big drill, you could really hurt yourself. Good luck and be safe.

I'd use my router and jasper circle jig. In case you even need a larger, or more specific hard to get sized hole, see if you have a buddy with this setup. Perfect circles from 1"-18" every time at 1/16" increments if you have both the big and small jig.

If you have a decent drill the Harbor Freight hole saw kit can't be beat. They're even on sale (the whole kit) for $5 once in a while. Coupled up with my <$20 corded Harbor Freight drill I can cut perfect ducting holes and holes for netpots and bulkheads in reservoirs all day long. I love my jigsaw but when it comes to cutting a circle I'm always going to reach for the holesaws first.
