what sites do you guys use to get your torrents?

Here is the log of the bittorrent i am downloading... at a snails pace :/

I only started using bit torrents last night.

I downloaded a movie and an album last night at decent speeds, +-20kbs each but now a.scanner.darkly is downloading around the 7kbs mark and will take around 24hrs at current speeds...

I have utorrent and configured my LAN as explained to portforward...

Is there anything i can do to improve this speed???

How will limiting the speed make it faster Space ghost???

Wow, I usually pull around 200kbps, minimum.

Limiting the upload speed limits the amount of bandwidth used for uploads to other users.

I have mine set to limit uploads to 75 kbps, but I'm on a 8mbps burstable cable connection.

Try dropping your to about 40 and see what happens.

Here, this'll give you an idea what torrents are capable of once you get them dialed in on the right connection. This was before they upgraded my cable speed, as well

Hmm, thats real fast Nite tiger... i only have a 512k download here but should be around the 45kbs mark which is obviously way better than 7kbs... :/

Could my firewall be the problem? I have pc cillin by trend micro for security...

The tutorial for utorrent is good but warns opening up a port will make my pc very vulnerable to mal ware...

I'm unfamiliar with utorrent, though I've heard of it.

If you've done the port forward, you should be okay. i'm willing to bet you'll have more luck tweaking you up- and download rates.

One thing you can try is setting you DL rate to about 60% of your max and your upload rate to about 20%. Sounds odd to limit the DL speeds, but some BT clients respond well to some direction.

In the screenshot above, I actually had my DL rate set to 1 mbps out of a potential, at that time, of 1.5mbps

But my number of seeds and peers have dropped way back to 1 and 2 respectively...

O well, i am going to bed. Maybe it will have finished when i get up... still got 87% to download... nite Nite tiger

But, not gonna matter much with only one seed and 2 peers. Notice the number of seeds I have in that pic

When you're searching for torrents, try filtering it so that results are ranked in number of seeders. Get the one that has the most

Now i am confused... i thought a 512k download means a max kb/s of around 50???!!!

I chose the healthiest torrent with loads of peers and seeds but i am only connecting to a handful. Right now i have seeds 0(680) and peers 0(643) !!!!!!

My firewall is not allowing a port to open... would you advise me to let in traffic and possible malware???

Yeah, you're not getting a connection.

I open my firewall when I'm torrenting, but then again, I've got plenty of safeguards in place. I'm not sure what AV or protections you have, but if you're fairly confident in them, I'd go ahead and open the port.

heh, i started using bittornado and i have decent speeds...let 9 ports open... the only security i have is pccillin... and regular scans with spybot and adaware.

Only thing is its not uploading... o well.

What AV etc do you have?

Don't worry too much about not uploading, probably just means you don't have any parts of the torrent others need.

I actually am using two right now - Avira and AVG
