Id recommend mixing at least a bit of sand in with your growing mediums, you dont have to go all out like me, but its really stepped things up for me by adding sand. I prefer growing landraces and sativas and they always seem to prefer the sandy mixes
Perlite offers the same affect which is what I use for more aeration. Usually around a 70/30 mix for coco/perlite. I wasn't aware sand was good at wicking up moisture compared to other alternatives.

Well, i dont know how it compares, techjically id say organic mediums are "better" at wicking, at a price, unlike organic matter, sand does not wick up more water than it can really hold, so overwatering is less likely, as sand allows water to also flow freely once ag capacity. I stopped using perlite because i found it to actually be too much aeration, the medium was drying out unevenly between waterings aswell, with the surfaces and sides being dry, but the bottom and middle stahing soggy but a sandy mix dries in a more uniform fashion. I could probably go on for ages. When it comes to a good soil, it is around 50% air, and thats without the perlite!! But yes i just found perlite and coco to be too...Open? Not sure how to describe it. But sand keeps the rootzone HUMID, and i have seen over the years that water vapor encourages better roots than the ones that wrap around the pot in search of puddles of water if you get what i mean. sorry am not the best at explaining

I topdress every pot or even my houseplants with sand as it really keeps most of the gnats away aswell
I could see the sand being helpful as a shield for the top layer more so than perlite will offer. I've always grown in coco, and I've been very lucky to not have gnat or bug problem #knockonwood. I purposely won't keep houseplants for that very reason. Bug hotels.

I'm familiar with the root wrap around on pots which is why I have Incorporated using Fabrics for some time now

Lol. Do you reuse your coco and stuff, or get new each time?

Yeah, if you ever considered the surface of your soil to be a bit too porus, an inch layer of sand will seal all the gaps, it can help in certain situations at least.

I really hated using fabric pots and coir inside, but like using fabric pots outdoors for veg and stuff.

I have reused it before but it's just easier to start over fresh coco for me every time. It doesn't last forever anyway as It adsorbs.
Aw i see. Do you bin it or try and compost it? i always wondered what people would think if they saw perlite in one of my garden beds 😅🤣

I ended up giving all mine away, one of those massive ikea bags full of heavily perlited mix. "What did you use it for" and all i said was tropical houseplants...Wasnt lying 🤥 technically...

No composting or other gardening over here. I knew people who did both gardening and grow weed, they had regular infestations. I'm sure I'll run into that thing eventually, however I choose to roll the dice less than most 😂. I'm far from perfect though. Just trying to do the best I can and keep learning through the efforts of myself and others.

If your plants are healthy, pests will always struggle to take hold, so it seems you are already doing great...Im sure i would be jealous of your results!

Part of what i do is look for the insect resistant strains, as for me the growing and and gardening are the same. But i also have to contend with deer and bands of feral teenagers who will take the plant before it has even flowered aswell... So insects are just low on the hit list🫠

Although even insect resistant strains will get infested if they are sick, so again, kudos to you

When I first started growing It was soil, but that was lettuce and other microgreens . This was before I grew weed and I had quite the battle with fungus gnats. I switched to growing them in coco and all the gnats went away. During summer I've seen one or two a year that try to survive in my tent but can't, or I just swat it right away and save it the time 😂 🤦‍♂️.
I've never grown outdoors before I'm sure that can be a battle with animals bugs and poachers. Huge plants though!

You are clearly blessed because gnats loved the coir i used 💀☠️

Some people just have the gift i suppose

Put some yellow sticky traps in you tent I can guarantee if you're seeing them you'll have lots. Put them real close to the medium.. post results

I'm not seeing them but I have in years past, very very rarely. However when I grew in soil it crawled. They flew like Sentinels busting into Zion in the movie Matrix Revolution. I'll probably never grow in soil again

I'm sure I still have some of the yellow stickies from when I used to use soil, but I haven't had to use them in years because I just don't have problems anymore

I've had them for years. Got rid of them once took about a year. Now I just put various measures in place at times. Did the stickies a couple of weeks back and yep, shitloads of them. Got dunks in the res too. Probably order some tanlin too as that seems to help a fair bit. This is all in 75/25 perlite/coco with an inch or two of hydroton on top

Don't expect to eradicate them it's more population control for me..

Maybe I'm just too high but the way you talked about stickies having shit loads and dunks in the res cracked me up..Can't you just neem those bastards, or some h202 flushes perhaps?. Stickies is not a solution imo it's like putting a newspaper over a puddle of piss to stay dry. You use Diatomaceous earth ?

Could give floranova a go. I think that was it's name. Single part feed, for just about any media. Small white bottle that's pretty concentrated. Bit gritty, like white clay was used in it's manufacture. No problem hand watering though.
Krome got me into using floranova for awhile back in the day..same thing id always stay about 1 ec or no more then 1200 ppm . easy one bottle got some humic n fulvic i think in it to add a bit of flav so you dont get a boring salts only smoke.

Advanced Nutrients Connoisseur. Its that super simple, aint it? ;)

Sure thing. But show me a company that has a patented perfect PH formula, what works with the worst ever tap-water, what brings with ease superb quality and quantity with ease. :)
My friend and I ran the same deathstar cut. I ran cheap salts and he ran the full an line. My flower didn’t even look the same as his and had way more smell. My yields were also much higher.

I’m sure there were other issues, his plants appeared healthy, they just didn’t make a product as good as my salts.

I’m sure their product works for some people, but like I said, I’m paying under $20 per dried pound of flower in nutes, and I’m getting 2lbs + out of each 4x4 area.

This flower is just Florapro late bloom and ca + micros. Nothing else.

Many minerals are in better concentration growing with traditional formulas like Jacks, Masterblend or this new Florapro.

You get higher and better concentration and range of Calcium to Magnesium and higher amount of iron compared to AN. Cannabis almost need as much Ca as N in mid to late flower.

You get away with AN's formulas in traditional amended peat soil mixes with added Ca/Mg from lime and gypsum and in pure water cultures like Aeroponics or DWC were both Calcium and Magnesium have higher bio-availability and uptake at lower concentration.
