Saw Ruby Starr with Grey Ghost & Black Oak Arkansas together at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids Michigan about 1975.
Despite a normally relatively sharp memory, I can't recall if it was the same show we saw Mountain at, where I reconnected with a 3rd grade crush, Sally F., with feathers in her rainbow-streaked hair, held in place with a bandana. (I looked her up on Google the other night for shits and grins). Things had definitely changed since 3rd grade when we bumped into each other at the Mountain show... (lapses in memory now can either be blamed on age, or a product of the mid-1970s culture and substances; pick one.. or both).
IIRC we went to see BOA at the Masonic in Detroit in '74 (?). Still in HS and just mad for that half clad wild man "Jim Dandy" LOL Went to see him strut, sweat and 'growl' and while that was certainly exciting... this is when I became enamored with Miss Ruby Starr. What an effing powerhouse, just blew me away then and still does today. Wish I'd have seen her in GR for sure. Sadly so under appreciated and recognized for her talent. About 20 years ago I found the Ruby Starr and Grey Ghost album at a thrift shop, it didn't look as though it had even been played... then... it has some wear now though.
Thx for the memory... think I'll pop that old vinyl on now and reminisce a bit longer
