What makes a good dad a good dad?

A kid better then either parent

Nailed it. Can only truly judge a male by his progeny. Everything else is unfounded unless you've recorded the traits and what they passed on across multiple generations.
Few of the seed sellers today even do this. . .

I look for the things listed. Mostly smell , node spacing and cluster. A good dad really depends on what youre looking for though. Wether its resistance, potency, or structure.

Something that only recently got through to my old brain was that you should probably flower out your males before selecting one.

Even when overveged and the sex is clearly to see from preflowers, it's just not enough info it seems to make a good selection.

My next go around I plan to flower the males (maybe only for a few weeks) and look for one with strong/noticeable resin development.

I have come to believe that next to strong odors from a stemrub, quick and strong resin production seems to be very desirable in a male. Might be wrong though.

The whole node-spacing, clustering early vs late flowering etc. etc. I feel is a bit secondary to the resin development and stemrub when looking to breed for potency and terps.

Honestly, It's truly luck of the draw in my opinion. You could have a male that smells super good and crystals up and it could produce undesirable offspring and vice versa. We've all seen cute parents with ugly kids. :D

I have recently bred with a male that had no smell, stretched more then I would have liked and didn't seem overly special... But it did have a few traits that were powerful. It flipped over to flowering super fast, was the most vigorous plant I'd ever grown and really had a powerful rooting system. It also had a nice color to it and was very far removed from the strain I was breeding it with. The mother had none of those traits.. She was slow, not very vigorous in comparison, etc... but very beautiful flowers and stoney. Well, the plants that come from these two pairings are the sweetest smelling, most lovely plants I've ever grown... Mouth watering flavors. Most people would have thrown this guy out, but I gave him a chance and it paid off big time!!!

So I think you really need to breed with males (undesirable and desirable) to truly find out if they are "good" or " bad" for you... Which could take a long time. There's too many variables in the mix to just throw out a male because you thought it was too tall or not smelly enough or whatever else...

A lot of people go for visual traits, which is important too, yes, but I think more of the beneficial traits lie in some of the traits I described above. Things like roots, vigor, coloring, nute sensitivity.. etc.
