What is your best soil, and for what? Yield/Potency? Taste?

So lets here it, what soil recipe is the best that you have personally used. is there one that produces a better flavor? better looking bud? more resin? smelly buds? what recipe has given the biggest yield?

just curious as there are so many recipes out there which ones have worked for you guys and in what ways

40% Canadian Sphagnum Peat
30% homemade compost, EWC and/or Farmer D's Biodynamic compost
30% lava rock pieces

Amend with Espoma Garden-Tone, kelp meal, neem meal, arragonite, crab shell meal, and glacial rock dust. Add a little water and allow it to rest in a ventilated container for a month, being sure not to let it completely dry out. Give it a turn every now and then.

That's my exact soil recipe right there. It could be used as a "water-only" type of mix, but I use dynagro pro-teKt at half the recommended rate with every watering and homemade fermented plant extracts once a week. A couple of times a year I make aerated compost tea and apply that to.

I use it for growing not just that one plant, but almost anything that grows terrestrially aside from cacti. I mix the finished soil and a mixture of aeration components at a rate of 50/50 for that. The lettuce, basil, oregano, morning glories, marigolds, pineapples, cryptanthus, poppies, thyme, yarrow, coleus, parsley, cilantro, radishes, and yucca have all loved that soil recipe. When I would prune my little potted basil hedge on the back porch, my wife could smell it in the living room.

It never gets thrown away either. Just keep on top-dressing and roll with it.

FFOF works wonders for me in the indoor and outdoor gardens
amended with perlite and dolo
sometimes i add some coco.
I love it indoors, check out my album for results

my basil, sage, thyme love it.
the rosemary does well also with tomato's okra.
I save my cana grow soil and amended it with bone-blood-kelp meals and also use that for herbs-n-spices :smoke:

awesome thanks for the feedback. i too was hoping to go more for organics and taste. Looking more into Subcool's super soil...seems..super! only question is when he said to layer the bottoms 2/3rd of the bucket and fill rest with base soil such as roots organic where as you are saying base soil during veg and switch to subcools recipe for flower. Do you transplant from seed pot to veg then to flower, pot or is ur seed pot the same as ur veg and wait to transplant once it is time for flowering to begin? Only reason I ask is because I was under the impression that using subcools method (lining bottm half to third with hot soil and rest with base) would work throughout the entire plant's life cycle. Let me know if anyone has any experience either way n which worked best for you.

One last question I has was concerning the composting of the soil. Once it is all mixed does is literally have to bake in the sun. What I mean is if its sunny all day long in winter and I bake it then will It be fully functional after a month compared to leaving the container open during the summer months? Is it a matter of sunlight or temperature when leaving your mixture to sit?

Espoma Organic potting mix is one that I like using, as well as custom blends of peat moss, compost, perlite, and dolomite lime.

I don't do the layering thing so someone else will have to comment on that, but no, cooking soil does not mean leaving in the sun. Keep it moistened, but not soaked and turn it every now and then. A container with a bunch of holes in it works best. Again, not in the sun.

i can gladly answer the question about subcools super soil.

I take take the seedling, and stick it into a medium for seedlings. Roots might be a bit hot for this. Roots 707 might be ok, but I have not used it. There is a number of things you can do this with. I put that seedling mix in a cup with the sprout untill it roots well.

From there I put it into Roots Organics Soil in a 1 or 2 gal. pot. I veg in there for a while. During this time i mostly feed just water, and maybe a bit of Nitrogen once or twice, maybe a drop of superthrive. 2 Weeks before flowering you transplant into your baby into the 7 gal. with the Super Soil in it. Let it veg for 2 or 3 weeks to get a nice root ball going. From there just water, and a bit of sugars on days 30 and 45.

It works wonders I tell you. Jaw dropping results!

OK cool note on cooking soil check. ONe problem I was having is the yield for Subcool's recipe. Has anyone tried it with half the ingredients, or at a different ratio that does not produce so much. If I will only be using it for the flower stage I won't have a need for that much soil.

And thanks for the transplanting tips, really appreciate it.

Conversion factor: If you want 1/5 of the recipe, multiply all ingredients by .2, for a half batch multiply everything by .5, .75 for a 3/4 batch, etc.

On transplanting-- I wait until I can see some roots out the bottom of the pot and make sure the soil is moderately moistened before doing the deed, so that everything comes out in a nice clean lump. You'll get a feel for when a plant is ready after you've seen a couple of rootballs.

yes i make a half recipe everytime. a yeild of 24 zips off of 2 600's is very good, especially using water only.

That is very good I am interested in hearing about ur setup if you'd like to share as it sounds like a lot of what I'm looking into. Getting 24z off 2 600w would be ideal for me, and very well could be a reality after some time.

Ok so it is just like converting any other cooking recipe nice. I wasn't sure if all of those element in bulk just worked better together or if making it in such was possible.

Thats what I have heard, water night before TP and then right before to ensure that the root ball is wet in order to minimize the stress on your plant. Is that correct seems to make the most sense to me from what I have read. Also you say you wait to see roots coming out of your pot, at ur seedling/veg stage what size pots are you using, just curious.

I don't bother waiting untill I see roots coming out the bottom of the pot, I would honestly be concerded with my pots if I did. Water day of or night before a transplant will be fine. I do know that after you TP they would like to sleep for a while to deal with the stress. My set up is just 2 600's and fresh air intake and outtake. Nothing too complicated. Sometimes with this hobby less is more.
