What is an idiot proof way to germinate seeds?

~fvk~

the Lion is going Guerrilla...
Okay, I am like the master at popping beans for some reason. I've gotten beans that shouldn't even sprout to make it above surface, just to sit there with nothing but cotyledons. I probably take too much credit for their will to survive though.

I soak for 24 hours in a cup of tap water, in a bowl on top of a heating pad set on low. Then I cover the top with a lid or something and throw a couple black t shirts over it. After 24 hours, regardless of whether they crack or not, I put them in coco and then let them do their own thing under some fluros. I've never had a problem doing it this way, usually get at least 9/10, except with one breeder and I'm pretty sure that they just all around suck... But we'll see...

Fluorescent lighting is satisfactory with cool white or higher color temperature tubes being preferable.
Seedlings have a tendency to stretch under most floroescents.

I have to disagree on this one. The most dense growth I have ever had was under fluorescents. Stable temperatures helps, but also they emit light from more than just one direction. Lights the plant way more uniformly.

I've had about a 90%+ rate of germ within a day or two with the moist paper towel method. I like to put the paper towel in a sealed ziplock bag to prevent contamination from outside sources, and I place the bag on top of my CRT monitor under a hand towel. The monitor provides enough warmth to kick the seeds into gear and the hand towel keeps it dark. Once popped I go straight to soil. It's pretty fool proof to me.

welcome.
i get really good results by taking a paper towel, get it good and damp, throw in your beans between a fold, put that in a plastic baggie, close it. and put it in a cool dark area. and wait. as soon as you see a little sprout come out and its about 1/8" long, its ready to be planted. i usually get sprouts within two or three days. but as stated above, i dont think there is a "best way" either, its just what way works best for you. so experiment around, see what you come up with.

The 3 trusted germination methods in no particular order.

#1)Bury 4th of an inch in soil
#2)Place in cup of water
#3)Place in moist paper towel/sandwhich bag

Me, I put water in a cup, and dump seeds in and leave be. 1-2 days later, seeds break out a taproot. Also I use baby wipes sometimes instead of the paper towel method. I always have 90-95% germ rates.

I prefer the paper towel and ziploc method. Wrap with a dish towel (something to block all the light), and put on top of something warm (I usually use a cable box, PC tower, or a heating pad on low). 24-36hrs. and I have super sufficient tap roots.

Bury those in whatever medium no more than 1" deep. Another 24-48hrs. they should have all broken soil. Again, I use a heating pad on low under my tray for seedlings..

The heat seems to speed things up a bit. Try not to go over 78-80F.

For a couple beans....

Soak 12-18 hrs in RO water (Don't let it crack)
Moisten any "Seedling-Mix" and put a 7oz cup about halfway.
Put the seed 1/4" deep and put a light pat of dirt over it.
Tape another 7oz cup upside down over the first.

Important: Put it in a 75F place until it sprouts and sheds the seed hull.

After the hull drops off, immediately untape the cup and take the lid off.

The sides of the cup will keep enough humidity in that the seedling should be able to harden off without wilting. I've taken seedlings that just sprouted under 55w PL-L lamps and put them directly under 1K HPS lamp and they've hardened off and grown perfectly. If you keep it under fluoros for a day or so... the leaves adapt to Fluoros and you're going to have to gently introduce them to HPS.

Hope this helps. :D

Why? I let mine crack with tips coming out, it doesnt hurt anything. Been doing it for years with no problems. People can talk about disease and whatever all they want but fact of matter is, it doesnt matter how you germ, as long as they germ.

On a side note, i took 100 seeds from a cross I made and left them in a cup of water and forgot about them for about a week by mistake (it happens) and all had split and had taproots growing ranging from eighth an inch to half an inch. Guess what? I put them outside in the ground at a spot i dont care for and ALL of them sprouted and are healthy 2 inch seedlings now.

People get too anal about growing marijuana.
