What genetics led to modern cannabis insane trichome coverage?

Some pictures show lots of hairs with no caps or glands, I attribute these to extra cal mag and led's, as there are calcium carbonate crystals at the base of each one. If you breed for these it just makes sense there would be more over each generation. But there could be other reasons the buds are obviously different.

This question has multiple answers, but the biggest one is selective breeding. With enough selective breeding you can narrow down potency quite a bit. Cannabis because of the massive amount of seeds you get finding a unicorn can be pretty easy. There are a few land races that where potent, but I'd go back before og kush, or chem and say afgani, especially skunk x afgan.

Potency and trichome coverage are not always correlated...

anyway i remember that white widow was the first plant where i saw that crazy trichome cover, medium long stems and sticky resin. I also remember shark shock as one of the first strains that consistently produced crazy frosty specimens with those typical trichome tunnels. Before the widow i think NL was the undisputed queen.
Regarding new things, i often see trichomes with very long stems and with lots of barely sketched heads and i always, always find soapy resin.
