What fan speed controller should I use with a 12" Phat fan?

Title says it all. I'm getting a 1708 CFM 12" Phat fan (https://www.hydrofarm.com/p/PF3012) from Hydrofram. On their website it says it uses 489 watts of Power. It also says under FAQ that the Activ Air Fan Adjuster (https://www.hydrofarm.com/p/ACSC) works with all Hydrofarm inline fans. However, when I go to the Adjusters' link, it says rated up to 350 W max.

So their website contradicts itself, and I have not been able to get a certain answer. I've basically only gotten "It should work" and that was even from the first person I talked to at Hydrofarm.

So I need a speed controller for the fan, can someone point me in the right direction of what to look for?

Variac makes solid, well respected speed controllers.

No hum, no fuss, they just work.

I'm not too knowledgeable with electricity and amps and what not. I don't know which one would be strong enough to control my fan properly.

That unit is rated at 4.1 amps, so get this Variac:

Will I not need one that can stand more than 4.1? Since the fan is 4.1 itself. I'm not knowledgeable on any of this electricity stuff like I was saying, but to me it seems like you wouldn't want to constantly be running the controller at full force? Or am I missing something/over complicating it?

Ideally, I don't want to spend another $100 on a controller, but I don't want to get the wrong controller and mess up my new fan also.

I got one like this and it works very well and for the price you can't go wrong.

The ones like that have terrible reviews on amazon I see...

I almost want to buy a variac because I've read they control your fan more appropriately, VS. some of the dimmers, apparently the dimmers turn your fan off and on a lot of times really quickly and consecutively and that is how it slows your fan down?

I've been using the <$20 speed controller for a few years on a 6" h.o. can fan with no issues. What would the >$100 variac controller do that the cheap one won't do?

I have no issues slowing my fan with it.
