What does it take to start a small seed company?

Just from reading what the breeders go through, it seems like it takes growing to another level. If you think about the " Haze Bros" and how many years they spent developing haze, it's really quite an accomplishment. But remember many gardeners come up with new roses or flowers all the time. But that is legal and so easier for them. I could spend 15 + hours a week in my garden ( real garden with roses, fruit trees etc.) just on maintainance. Breeding is a job. Or it would seem something that would take years.

I am sure Rez would chime in. How many years did he work on the SD IBL?

Can't wait for my Williams WOnder...

Cuzin_Dave, I agree with what you are saying. If i were to make seeds for sale i would obviously put something out that would be considered stable, spending years crossing, selecting, back-crossing, testing...ETC until i have something truly worth the moolah so to speak. My knowledge of breeding is basic, and the grows this year will be my first with a specific goal in mind i.e. planned pollination/selection. I would most definitely be happy with anything i produce because i will be personally selecting parents i like, therefore it would be to my taste. If i were breeding for the purpose of selling my seeds i would grow larger populations and do it the right way, and spend several years on it. If its for my own stash i certainly wouldn't/couldn't go to those lengths needed to truly stabilise a strain. Also my personal strains/crosses/varieties call them what you will, do not need to conform to anything to justify the purchase...there is so much better gear out there why bother with something that everyone but me may consider un-spectacular?

:fsu: What a load of waffle that was lol....for some reason i just went into one, what was the question again????? :deadhorse

c-ray, Thanks for the link man. Ill keep it in mind... :sasmokin:

Kmarpa, Thanks for dropping in man. It would be a massive achievement to create anything close to some strains/hybrids on the market, let alone such a household name such as haze. :yeahthats

Just for the record i don't actually want to start up a seed company, i just wanted your opinions on how you think the market should be, how breeders should go about things ETC ETC...I simply don't have the time or the money lol. :violin:

....Oh,and with these recent, horrifying events,a set of stainless steel balls certainly doesn't hurt.

....The SD IBLs been an ongoing Project for about three years, and I'm still working on it.

Hello peeps!

I agree with most of your findings here, but you must see what the market wants. A lot, maybe most of the people would be pleased with VERY GOOD F1 hybrid. Take a pure legend and cross it with something fresh & popular and you got a winner!

This is not looking from biological side.

Peace and love,
Agnes

With any luck Suzy CremeCheese, our doyenne of plant breeding and genetics will recreate an advanced breeding forum here on IC.
The illegality of cannabis pretty much circumscribes even the best breeding programme and leaves the pros just as hamstrung as the closet breeder. In terms of effective breeding populations (Ne) virtually all cannabis breeders are "closet breeders". Period.
Don't be too hypercritical of your own efforts either. None of the "breeders" working for Emery ever wrung their hands in anguish over their shabby and shitty products. Most of them would probably find a 1:2:1 Punnett square mathematically overwhelming. So give yourself some credit.

Hey Agnes, thanks for dropping by. Everyone has a different opinion of what is good bud, and what is a good strain. But i agree, most people would just be happy to have cannabis seeds from an elite clone cross...or whatever.

Rezdog, Its a risky business considering the legal issues. Also having to move to a safe country so to speak...such as Holland, Switzerland, Spain ETC would be a massive change to accommodate for breeding work. If i were to ditch my job and decide to grow/breed for a living, i would have to re-locate to a more tolerant country.. :sasmokin:

Cuzin_Dave, dude i was trying to say (hypothetically speaking) that anything i create in the way of hybrids, i would be more than happy with. Simply because it is made of my own blood, sweat and tears so to speak. But if 99.99% of growers that grew it thought it was shit for whatever reason, that is irrelevant because they were not meant to appeal to anyone but myself. Somebody might think that a mongrel dog is but ugly, but the dogs owner loves him to bits...If i ever made seeds, they would never be sold by me, given away but never for money. Simply because a million people may not like exactly what i like, so i would have to change what i am selecting for to appeal to the masses. do you see what i am saying?
Good luck with the Suzy CremeCheese, i shall keep my eye out for that one.. :joint:

The actual breeding value of elite clone stock is a very moot point among breeders. If the clone is poly hybrid and represents a rare combination of infrequent dominant and recessive alleles, the resultant phenotypes will not likely resemble the MUM plant, nor have a higher basic fitness level. Another point to consider is that the reason such alleles are so infrequent is because there aren't many of them in the overall population group. Small populations are prone to sampling error and the results may not be exactly as anticipated.
You are right about the whole thing being fun though, especially when freed of the tyranny of the market place. Can always smoke the failures and try again.

Selling seeds is way more profitable than selling weed. Why do you think they grow for seeds? An oz of dope is average $250 an OZ..An oz of seeds IMO is about 5,000 seeds. At $10 a seed you know where the money is at!5,000 times $10 = $50,000...Need I say more, its deffinately an empire to some, with minimum work...

The market wants a strain that has good bag appeal, consistantly turns purple, has nice resin production, is potent, yields well, and finishes in under 8 weeks. good luck. Oh, it should have a catchy name, too.
