5 Strange Cases of Accused Animal Spies

Squirrel-spy-ppcorn-1074x636-1-1024x606-1.jpeg

In April, Norwegian researchers apprehended a beluga whale that had been harassing local fishermen. According to Insider, experts at Norway’s Institute of Marine Research have come to the conclusion that the whale is likely a tool of the Russian military. The article reports, “[the whale] “had an attachment that could fit a GoPro camera and was likely used to hold surveillance equipment like cameras or other marine sensors.”

If this aquatic mammal is indeed an asset for the Russian government, it wouldn’t be the first animal trained for or accused of espionage. Here is a list of the five strangest cases of animals accused of being spies.

(1) The Bionic Shark

remote-control-shark.jpeg

In 2006, the BBC reported on a supposed plan by US researchers to use sharks to track underwater vessels by implanting microchips in their brains. According to the article, the program, which was funded by the Pentagon’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), intended “to build on latest developments in brain implant technology which has already seen scientists controlling the movements of fish, rats and monkeys.”

The chip would essentially allow military personnel to “steer” the sharks from remote locations, using the animal’s natural stealth and heightened unwater senses to keep tabs on underwater vessels. As of today, it is unclear what results the research yielded.

(2) Eye In The Sky

FTK-Eye-in-the-sky-1024x962-1.jpeg

Pigeons have a long and illustrious history in modern warfare. They were famously used to pass messages between battalions in World War I, but apparently, their military service does not end there.

According to the Smithsonian, B.F Skinner, a forefather of modern behavioral science, wanted to fit the birds with homing devices that would allow them to steer missiles toward their targets. The idea ultimately proved fruitless.

(3) The Cat That Came In From The Cold

FTK_Spy-Cat-1024x576-1.jpeg

The CIA got up to a lot of strange business in the 1960s. One of the strangest was an attempt by the organization to surgically alter household cats so that they could pass along audio recordings taken from Soviet embassies. The Smithsonian reports that “the team turned the cat into a transmitter—with…a wire running from the cat’s inner ear to a battery and instrument cluster implanted in its rib cage.”

The program was eventually scrapped because researchers couldn’t control the cat’s movements. It tended to simply wander off for its own mysterious reasons. How did they not see that coming? It was a cat. That is kind of what they do.

(4) Squirrelling Away More Than A Few Nuts

In 2007, Iranian officials rounded up more than a dozen squirrels around a nuclear enrichment plant and accused them of spying for the Israeli government. According to the state-sponsored Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), “The squirrels were carrying spy gear of foreign agencies, and were stopped before they could act, thanks to the alertness of our intelligence services.”

The squirrels could not be reached for comment to explain their actions. However, National Public Radio (NPR) did interview wildlife professor John Koprowski on the air at the time. Koprowski said that it was unlikely that a squirrel could be trained to carry out complex intelligence gathering techniques — unlikely, but not impossible.

(5) They Called Him The Chameleon

spy-chameleon.jpeg

Apparently, there is a long history of accusations lodged against Israel using animal related espionage. In fact, there is a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to documenting them. One of the most recent involves uranium sniffing chameleons.

According to The Times of Israel, Hassan Firuzabadi, a senior military adviser to Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that the West had smuggled chameleons into Iran with the intent of monitoring the country’s nuclear program. He said they could detect uranium mines.

Scientists have since refuted chameleon's uranium detecting abilities.

According to that absolute shitrag NY Times, Edward Koch, one of
the most popular and colorful (but also totally ineffectual) mayors in New York history, endured a 'silent pain' that - according to the 'news'paper - only those in his inner circle knew.

He was described as a 'master showman with plenty of chutzpah' who rode the NYC subways, would often ask New Yorker's 'How'm I doin?

and who had a great tenacity for the city he loved during his three terms in office from 1978 to 1989. The New York Times delves into the former Mayor's romantic relationship with Richard W. Nathan, a 30-something Harvard-educated health care consultant, that was based on on-record interviews with six people who knew about the pair.

‘Narco-tunnel’ connecting San Diego and Tijuana found during $25M drug bust

U.S. law enforcement discovered a massive drug smuggling tunnel — the length of six football fields — running under the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday.

AAXnJbY.img

The sophisticated passageway connected Tijuana, Mexico with a warehouse in San Diego, and included a railway, ventilation systems, electricity and reinforced walls, according to authorities. The tunnel ran 1,744 feet, around a third of a mile, and was 61 feet deep, about six storeys.

Law enforcement is unsure of how long the tunnel was operating but seized almost 2,000 pounds of cocaine, 165 pounds of meth and 3.5 pounds of heroin in connection with the investigation, valued at around US$25 million.

Six Californian residents, ages 31 to 55, were arrested and have been charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine. If found guilty, they face life in prison and up to a US$1 million fine.

In the last two decades, more than a dozen well-equipped tunnels have been discovered in the Otay Mesa border area in San Diego, where this most recent tunnel was found.

This area is one of the most fortified parts of the border, illustrating the limitations of Donald Trump's border wall.

U.S. law enforcement discovered the massive tunnel after staking out a nearby home that was used to stash drugs. Officials began making traffic stops of vehicles that had been to the house and discovered they were also connected to a warehouse called Amistad Park, according to a federal criminal complaint.

"In a span of a few hours, agents watched five vehicles come and go from the stash house and this warehouse, we allege that the defendants were driving into the garage and loading or dropping off cardboard boxes full of drugs to further the movement or distribution of drugs throughout the United States, the federal agents were watching the whole time," U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman told ABC affiliate KGTV.

Authorities raided the properties and discovered the opening of a tunnel carved into the cement floor of the warehouse.

"There is no more light at the end of this narco-tunnel," said Randy Grossman, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California. "We will take down every subterranean smuggling route we find to keep illicit drugs from reaching our streets and destroying our families and communities."

By federal law, U.S. authorities must fill the U.S. side of tunnels with concrete after they are discovered.

The type of drugs seized may signal a shift from the multi-ton loads of cannabis that were often found in discoveries before California legalized pot for recreational use in 2019.

Hard drugs, such as heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl, are typically smuggled through official border crossings from Mexico because their small size and lack of odour make them difficult to detect. But tunnels give smugglers the advantage of being able to carry huge loads at lightning speed.

These cross-border passages date back to the early 1990s and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said in 2020 that they are generally found in California and Arizona and associated with Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.

You can have a vanity plate. It just can't say 'bite me'... in Florida

_192143309833667_7382480433610210414_n.JPG

If anyone wants to get a personalized license plate from the state of Florida, it’s best to be creative and avoid vulgar language - and don’t try “WANKRR” because it’s already been rejected.

Florida drivers have a lot of leeway when it comes to personalized license plates. They can be used to describe oneself or a vehicle and can sometimes be humorous to other drivers on the road. But in large part, it’s a crapshoot for those who don’t know the rules.

Over the last three years, Floridians have applied for more than 1,000 personalized license plates, records obtained by the Gainesville Sun show, a vast majority of which were rejected.

Plates like “SXY GRMA” got the green light from state officials, while “FARTMAN” was left
in the virtual dust bin.

Offensive or objectionable plates are often rejected by the state. “DOO DOO” and “UID IOT” didn’t make the cut, while more revealing “I GOTA P” and “MO STIKY” requests did, the state’s list shows.

Plates with phrases like “GET SOME” or “MCNASTY” made it through. While “OH FARTS” and “MR POOP” got blocked.

“Personalized license plate requests received by the department with obscene or objectionable words will be rejected,” said Jessica Kelleher, the deputy communications director at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle.

The state rejected 275 personalized plates from 2013 to 2018, The Gainesville Sun reported in 2018. But over the past three years since, the state rejected 790 requested plates, according to data from a public records request.

_192143309833667_7382480433610210414_n.JPG

The coronavirus pandemic coincided with a large drop in requests, the state’s list shows. While more than 1,000 plate requests were received in 2019, only about 250 were submitted in the following two years combined. During that same time, just four personalized plates were approved.

“GETU5UM,” “FREEAZ” and “POOBLIX” were first rejected, but after a further review was overturned and approved. “SATN LVS” is the only personalized plate since 2020 to be approved on initial review.

A Florida woman, who was performing oral sex on the driver, nearly bites his penis off when they get into head-on collision with FedEx van...

_10207617405a.JPG

A Florida driver nearly had his penis bitten off by a woman giving him oral sex after he 'lost control' of his car in a head-on collision.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to an accident on North Ocean Boulevard and 19th Street on Thursday after the unidentified man crashed his vehicle into a FedEx van. Authorities said that the man 'lost control' of the vehicle around 7pm after becoming distracted by his girlfriend's sexual acts. The couple was found half-naked in their SUV and can be seen in photos laying on the ground.

_102076.JPG

The men appears to be in pain as officers gather around him while he laid on his back. The woman, who had her jeans around her ankles, laid face down on the pavement in nothing but her underwear and a white tank top.

The driver sustained injuries in his groin area, but otherwise was fine. The woman was said to have sustain mild injuries on impact.

The two passengers in the FedEx vehicles were said to be fine and sustained mild injuries. In photos, it appears the two were casually lying on the sidewalk as they waited for authorities to deal with the crash.

So far, no one has been charged in the accident and police have not released names. Photos of the crash show significant damage to both vehicles, with black SUV's hood complete crushed.

The white commercial van also had significant damage to its hood and it appears the airbags were deployed. It is not know how fast either driver was going at the time of impact.

This poor woman obviously bit off more than she could chew.

Thailand's 'Joe Ferrari' cop jailed for life over death of suspect

A flashy Thai cop nicknamed "Joe Ferrari" for his taste in fast cars was on Wednesday jailed for life for torturing a drugs suspect to death during a brutal interrogation.

A Bangkok court found Thitisan Utthanaphon guilty of murder by torture in a case that caused public outrage and shone a rare light on police brutality and corruption in the kingdom.

Leaked viral footage showed Thitisan and six other officers wrapping seven plastic bags around 24-year-old Jirapong Thanapat's head while questioning him and trying to extort $60,000, leading to his death.

The judge at Bangkok's Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases sentenced the 41-year-old to death, but immediately commuted it to life imprisonment.

"I felt helpless during the ruling, and my wife was crying," Jakkrit Klandi, the victim's father, said outside the court.

"All seven officers should learn their lesson and pay for their crime," he said.

The court reduced Thitisan's sentence to life imprisonment because he had attempted to revive the suspect, and had paid for the funeral expenses for the family.

But Penh Thanapat, the Jirapong's mother, was not satisfied, telling reporters she never wanted to see Thitisan's face.

"I want (the death sentence). I want things to happen to him as it happened to my son," she said.

Thitisan looked healthy and was seen chuckling with guards inside the courtroom before the verdict, but closed his eyes as the sentence was read.

Five of the other six officers involved in the case were found guilty of murder and also received life sentences. A seventh got five years and four months, following his testimony.

Thitisan and the other officers have a month to appeal against the verdict, according to their lawyers.

The victim's parents said they were unhappy with the officers' offer of 600,000 baht ($17,000) compensation, with Jakkrit telling reporters he would consult lawyers.

They had initially asked the court for 1.6 million baht.

After the footage leaked in August last year, the officer -- a former district chief in the northern province of Nakhon Sawan -- surrendered himself to police, who raided his Bangkok mansion and found several luxury cars.

In a press conference after his surrender he said Jirapong's death was an accident.

- 'Exceptional case' -

Analysts and human rights observers cautioned that this verdict was not indicative of a wider shift in policing in Thailand.

"This relatively light sentence tells us that legal impunity for police is alive and well in Thailand," said Paul Chambers, of the Center of ASEAN Community Studies at Naresuan University in Thailand.

He said Thitisan and the other officers would likely have their sentences reduced on appeal.

Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch's deputy Asia director, told AFP it was an "exceptional" case.

"For every case like this, there are dozens more where police torture is covered up, victims and whistleblowers face retaliation, and police impunity to commit abuses is alive and well," he said.

"This case may have put a temporary dent in the culture of police impunity in Thailand, but you can be sure that the overall system has not changed."

McLaren 600LT Split by Guardrail, Abandoned in Washington State

The damaged $250,000 sports car was found on State Route 512 near Tacoma, Washington

f5d0b0553438443ac86aabcbd0ae20bb.jpg

Someone’s reaction to crashing a quarter million dollar sports car is going to be largely based on their annual income and their blood alcohol level. Though, I’ve never seen anyone abandon an expensive road-going missile on the roadside. This changed earlier this week.

An unattended white 2020 McLaren 600LT was found on State Route 512 near Tacoma, Washington by the Washington State Patrol. The longtail McLaren was discovered wedged under a guardrail. Photos posted to Twitter by one of the State Patrol’s public information officers show the car’s greenhouse violently split by the barrier with the lights still on and the driver’s side door open.

According to the State Patrol, the McLaren wasn’t reported stolen and was still fitted with dealership plates. The vehicle does have a registered owner in Washington, but it’s still unclear how the sports car ended up under a guardrail. The 592-horsepower McLaren could have been too much for a new owner to handle, or maybe the driver wasn’t the car’s owner.

Trooper John Dattilo told The Oregonian, “This kind of crash happens all the time, where people don’t want to get in trouble so they leave the car behind. But it’s not necessarily common for it to be a $200,000 McLaren, though.” In Washington State, leaving the scene of property damage as a driver can lead to a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge. The exact wording in the state’s legal code:

Chapter 46.52.010
(2) The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to property fixed or placed upon or adjacent to any public highway shall take reasonable steps to locate and notify the owner or person in charge of such property of such fact and of the name and address of the operator and owner of the vehicle striking such property, or shall leave in a conspicuous place upon the property struck a written notice, giving the name and address of the operator and of the owner of the vehicle so striking the property, and such person shall further make report of such accident as in the case of other accidents upon the public highways of this state.

Though, the McLaren 600LT’s value makes it seem more likely that the driver was fleeing legal consequences more severe than a misdemeanor.

Man with the 'world's largest penis' is registered disabled because of his 19-inch manhood because he can't wear work uniforms or get on his knees

  • Roberto Esquivel Cabrera, 54, from northern Mexico, has an 18.9inch penis
  • He stretched it using weights and it is now thought to be the world's biggest
  • Government has officially recognised him as disabled, and he gets support
  • That is despite him refusing to get a reduction because he wants to work in porn
A Mexican man believed to have the world's largest penis has officially been registered as disabled.

Roberto Esquivel Cabrera, 54, from the northern town of Saltillo, has an 18.9inch manhood which he created himself by stretching it using weights.

But he is now receiving government handouts despite refusing to get a reduction because he hopes to find work in the American porn industry.

Roberto Esquivel Cabrera claims to have the largest penis in the world but a radiologist has questioned whether it's true

477BC53C00000578-5199369-image-a-1_1513796949311.jpg

Roberto Esquivel Cabrera is registered disabled and receives handouts from the Mexican government because his 18.9inch manhood stops him from working.

He said: 'I cannot wear a uniform like anybody in the companies and also I cannot get on my knees.

'I cannot run fast and so the companies think badly of me. They say that they will call me, but they never do.'

Mr Cabera has been offered work in the adult entertainment industry by the man behind YouPorn and the FakeTaxi series.

Medics have urged him to have a reduction so he will be able to function normally and have children, but he has refused.

'He'd rather have a penis bigger than the rest of the people,' Dr Jesus David Salazar Gonzalez said.

'In Latin culture whoever has the bigger penis is more macho. It's something that makes him different to the rest of the people and makes him feels special.'

Mr Cabera added: 'I am famous because I have the biggest penis in the world. I am happy with my penis, I know nobody has the size I have.'
