Ten tons of cannabis is 20,000 pounds, which equals 320,000 ounces, which equals a little over 9,000,000 grams per month.
Man that has to be the most stupidest sentence ever in a news article.
Ten tons is 10,000,000 grams. That's not a little over 9,000,000 grams. It's one ton over!

That depends on where you are. You are describing metric tons and you would be right. However if they're talking U.S. tons (short ton) then the story is correct, 9,120,000 grams.

Americans Spent Nearly $150 Billion On Illegal Drugs In 2016

The U.S. opioid crisis has been making headlines again this week after pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson was fined $572 for fuelling the epidemic in Oklahoma in a historic ruling. Last year, drug overdoses claimed more than 68,000 American lives and 47,000 of those deaths involved an opioid. Even though heroin, prescription opioids and synthetic opioids like fentanyl are receiving most of the attention, deaths from other drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine are inreasing. A new report from the RAND Corporation has shed light on just how many people use illicit drugs across America as well as how much they pay for them.
In 2016 alone, people in the U.S. spent an estimated $146 billion on cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine. Adding RAND's figures together from 2006 to 2016 would mean total spending on illegal drugs over the course of the decade was nearly $1.5 trillion. Out of all four drugs in 2016, users spent the most on illicit marijuana - $52 billion. The market for the illegal green stuff is around the size of the cocaine and methamphetamine markets combined. Heroin has the second highest financial outlay ($43 billon) followed by methamphetamine ($27 billion) and cocaine ($24 billion).

‘It’s only a matter of time’ before homeless leprosy outbreak: NYU doc

‘It’s only a matter of time’ before homeless leprosy outbreak: NYU doc

Homeless conditions are so dire, diseases associated with the Middle Ages could soon re-emerge, according to a new report.

Dr. Marc Siegel of NYU Langone Health, writing for The Hill, warns that infections thought to be stamped out by modern medicine could make a comeback in communities with poor medical access.

About 95% of the US population was thought to be naturally immune to leprosy, despite occasional cases, but Siegel argues that such “diseases are re-emerging in some parts of America, including Los Angeles County, that we haven’t commonly seen since the Middle Ages,” Siegel reports, naming typhus and leprosy specifically.

The diseases, both treatable with antibiotics, can cause irreversible disabilities — including blindness and skin lesions — and turn deadly if not diagnosed or handled properly. Impoverished communities like the homeless are especially vulnerable.

“[It] seems only a matter of time before leprosy could take hold among the homeless population in an area such as Los Angeles County,” Siegel writes, citing the fact that 75% of the city’s 60,000 homeless people lack temporary shelter, hygiene and medical treatment, resulting in a “perfect cauldron for a contagious disease.”

There are more than 200,000 new cases of leprosy reported annually, the majority occurring in India but a number happening in Central and South America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Leprosy appearing among the homeless in LA is a sure recipe for instant public panic,” Siegel concludes his essay.

Underpopulated Italian region offers visitors €25,000 to move in

Underpopulated Italian region offers visitors €25,000 to move in

nmmz1wldloisvvkdsu8i.jpg

An underpopulated region in southern Italy is offering newcomers €700 per month for three years to live in one of its villages.

There are a few catches, however: the village must have fewer than 2,000 residents, and the newcomer must pledge to open a business.

“If we had offered funding, it would have been yet another charity gesture,” Donato Toma, the president of Molise, told the Guardian. “We wanted to do more; we wanted people to invest here. They can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant, anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the population.”

Toma also announced that each town with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants would receive €10,000 (£9,000) with which it would build infrastructure and promote cultural activities.

“It’s not just a matter of increasing the population. People also need infrastructure and a reason to stay, otherwise we’ll end up back where we started in a few years,” he said.

According to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat), Molise, with a population of 305,000, is among the regions that has lost more inhabitants in recent years – in excess of 9,000 have left since 2014.

In 2018, more than 2,800 inhabitants died or moved to another area, almost 1,000 more than the previous year. Not a single birth was registered in nine of its towns.

For the first time in 90 years, the number of Italian citizens living in Italy has fallen to about 55 million, according to Istat.

In 2014-18 the number of Italian citizens resident in the country fell by 677,000. Two factors are behind the decline, according to experts: a decrease in births, which is at an all-time low since the unification of Italy, and an increase in the migration of young people to other European countries in search of job opportunities. Nearly 157,000 people left the country in 2018, Istat said.

Italy is the only major European economy whose population is expected to decline further in the next five years, the UN has said. It ranks second – behind Japan – as the country with the greatest proportion of older people, with an estimated 168.7 over-65s for every 100 young people.

In an attempt to resuscitate these towns, several mayors, such as the one in Sutera, in the province of Caltanissetta in Sicily, have opened the doors of their vacant homes to asylum seekers who have crossed the Mediterranean from Libya.

Others, such as Sambuca, which are determined do anything it takes to survive, have adopted a strategy that has become fashionable in the south: sell, or practically give away, abandoned homes to anyone willing to move in. The symbolic price of a house is just €1.

America may soon find out if there are limits to how much money talks these days.

BangBros.com, a Miami-based porn website made a $10 million bid for naming rights to American Airlines Arena — the arena is home to the NBA’s Miami Heat franchise.

The porn site said on Twitter if their bid is successful they would rename the venue BangBros Center, which would be shortened to BBC.

“We’ve officially Submitted our $10,000,000 bid for the naming rights to the Miami Heat Arena. We wish to thank American Airlines for their past support of the @MiamiHEAT. We intend to change the name to the BangBros Center aka ‘The BBC,'” the tweet read.

The hashtag #BangBrosCares” was included.

Black panther casually strolls along city rooftop as shocked residents flee

Residents were stunned to spot a black panther taking a casual stroll along the window ledges of a building.

Video shows the impressive cat prowling the roofs of the residential building in Armentières, near Lille, in northern France, on Wednesday.

The majestic animal, at about the size of a small Labrador dog, walks along a second-floor ledge and goes in and out of an open window for nearly an hour.

Witnesses told local media that the black panther "would stop to watch a nearby train go by or to stare fixedly at a cat running down the stree

Eyewitnesses aFire services and a veterinarian were also called to trap the animal in one of the homes before tranquilising it with a dart.

Kader Laghouati from the Animal Protection League organisation in Lille said the panther is about five or six months old and weighs about 20kg (45lbs).

He added that the animal had been domesticated by its owner and was not aggressive.

Its claws were clipped and it was in good health in general.

Once captured, the panther was put in a cage and handed over to animal protection organisation called The League for the Protection of Animalslso snapped these pictures of the huge predator walking past the windows of their 1930s brick houses.

Local media La Voix du Nord reported the panther had entered an apartment where a 15-year-old girl was present.

She then fled upon seeing the animal walk into the room.

Police responded to the scene and set up a cordon as soon as they received reports from nearby residents.

U.S. invokes state secrets privilege to block American journalist’s challenge

U.S. invokes state secrets privilege to block American journalist’s challenge

.U.S. invokes state secrets privilege to block American journalist’s challenge to alleged spot on drone ‘kill list’

TUHI3EC4GII6PG35CRLW3QHTTU.jpg

A U.S. judge Tuesday dismissed an American journalist’s lawsuit challenging his alleged placement on a “kill list” by U.S. authorities in Syria, after the Trump administration invoked the “state secrets” privilege to withhold sensitive national security information.
U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer of Washington, D.C., last year had opened the way for Bilal Abdul Kareem, a freelance journalist who grew up in New York, to seek answers in his civil case from the government and to try to clear his name after what he claims were five near-misses by U.S. airstrikes in Syria.

Collyer in June 2018 ruled that Abdul Kareem, who said he was mistaken for a militant because of his frequent contact with militants linked to al-Qaeda, was exercising his constitutional right to due process in court.

But after talks between Abdul Kareem’s lawyers and U.S. authorities broke down, the government tapped the rarely invoked state secrets authority, saying Abdul Kareem sought information revealing “the existence and operational details of alleged military and intelligence activities directed at combating the terrorist threat to the United States.”
In a 14-page opinion, Collyer said she was bound to agree, saying the government’s right to withhold information in such instances is “absolute.”

“What constitutional right is more essential than the right to due process before the government may take a life? While the answer may be none, federal courts possess limited authority to resolve questions presented in a lawsuit, even when they are alleged to involve constitutional rights. This is such a case,” Collyer wrote, adding, “Despite the serious nature of Plaintiff’s allegations, this Court must dismiss the action pursuant to the government’s invocation of the state secrets privilege.”

Prosecutors said that disclosing whether Abdul Kareem is on the “kill list” could permit him to evade capture or further U.S. action, and also could risk revealing or compromising intelligence sources and methods.

Collyer at a May 2018 hearing in Abdul Kareem’s case questioned whether national security concerns trump individuals’ rights in the U.S. *targeted-killing program, a question left open by courts since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks . On Tuesday, the judge credited the government for engaging “in months of consideration” before providing “reasoned declarations” supporting its views.

Collyer noted that if Abdul Kareem were to face criminal prosecution, the government would be required to disclose classified information important to his defense. But she said that no such requirement applies to offset the state secret privilege in a civil case.
The judge also said it was not up to the courts to adopt Abdul Kareem’s attorneys’ proposal that people placed on the “kill list” should have the same due-process protections as organizations designated as terrorists by the State or Treasury departments.

In a statement, Abdul Kareem’s attorneys said, “We are very disappointed in today’s decision,” which they said “renders the right to due process effectively meaningless for Mr. Kareem.”
“For the first time ever, a United States federal court ruled that the government may kill one of its citizens without providing him the information necessary to prove that he is being wrongly targeted and does not deserve to die,” attorney Tara J. Plochocki said. “The U.S. Government could have provided this information but chose not to and the Court found that the Government’s assertion of national security trumps his right not to be killed.”

Guy Takes LSD at Disneyland Paris, Has Quite the Adventure

After first falling, appropriately, into the Adventureland lake

A Swiss tourist took LSD at Disneyland Paris, fell into a lake, then disappeared for hours before turning up naked more than a mile away. It must've been quite a trip, though the 32-year-old engineer's memory is faulty. Indeed, he couldn't recall the events of Friday evening when he was found walking naked, with scratches all over his body, in the town of Chessy early Saturday, per the Washington Post. The Swiss man, who admitted to taking LSD for a bet, was barefoot "in the middle of the road" and "did not have a centimeter of clothes on him," according to the resident who found him.

The resident gave the man clothes and drove him back to the park around 1am, per the Post. By that time, police officers, firefighters, divers, dogs, a helicopter, and some 80 Disneyland employees had spent hours searching for him. His 30-year-old girlfriend, who reportedly gave him the hallucinogenic drug, had sounded the alarm around 8:30pm. She reported that her boyfriend had fallen into a man-made lake in Adventureland and failed to surface. Both were eventually arrested for narcotics use, per the Orange County Register. However, they were released with a warning on Saturday afternoon

Study suggests hemp batteries are more powerful than lithium and graphene

Study suggests hemp batteries are more powerful than lithium and graphene

Hemp is an incredibly versatile crop. Not only can it be used for industrial purposes, clothing, food, and paper, but new research suggests hemp batteries are even more powerful than lithium and graphene.

The experiment was conducted by Robert Murray Smith and was discussed on his relatively popular YouTube channel. Smith began by observing a Volts by Amps curve of both the hemp and lithium batteries. Surprisingly, the power underneath the hemp cell was a value of 31 while that of the lithium cell had a value of just 4.

Smith doesn’t claim to have proven anything. Rather, he says the results of the experiment simply show the performance of the hemp cell is “significantly better” than the lithium cell.

[YOUTUBEIF]7K4eIOmiJL4[/YOUTUBEIF]

This discovery isn’t new. In 2014, researchers in the US found that waste fibers — “shiv” — from hemp crops can be transformed into “ultrafast” super capacitors that are “better than graphene.” For those who are unaware, graphene is a unique synthetic carbon material that is lighter than foil, as well as bulletproof. The main limit to using it is feasibility. Fortunately, hemp costs one-thousandth of the price of graphene.

“People ask me: why hemp? I say, why not?” said Dr. Mitlin. “We’re making graphene-like materials for a thousandth of the price – and we’re doing it with waste.”

In the 2014 experiment, the team, led by Dr David Mitlin of Clarkson University, New York, “cooked” leftover bast fibre — the inner bark of the plant that typically ends up in landfills — into carbon nanosheets. The process is called hydrothermal synthesis.

The fibers were then recycled into supercapacitors, or energy storage devices which have changed the way electronics are powered. Conventional batteries store large reservoirs of energy and drip-feed. Supercapacitors, on the other hand, rapidly discharge their entire load. As a result, the latter is ideal in machines that require sharp bursts of power.

“People ask me: why hemp? I say, why not?” said Dr. Mitlin. “We’re making graphene-like materials for a thousandth of the price.”

According to Mitlin, “you can do really interesting things with bio-waste”. With banana peels, for instance, “you can turn them into a dense block of carbon – we call it pseudo-graphite – and that’s great for sodium-ion batteries. But if you look at hemp fibre its structure is the opposite – it makes sheets with high surface area – and that’s very conducive to supercapacitors.”

After the bark has been cooked, “you dissolve the lignin and the semicellulose, and it leaves these carbon nanosheets – a pseudo-graphene structure.” The resulting supercapacitors operate at a broad range of temperatures and a high energy density.

The peer-reviewed journal paper ranks the device “on par with or better than commercial graphene-based devices.”

“They work down to 0C and display some of the best power-energy combinations reported in the literature for any carbon,” Mitlin explained. “For example, at a very high power density of 20 kW/kg (kilowatt per kilo) and temperatures of 20, 60, and 100C, the energy densities are 19, 34, and 40 Wh/kg (watt-hours per kilo) respectively.” When fully assembled, the energy density is 12 Wh/kg, which can be achieved at a charge time less than six seconds.

In 2018, the Texas-based electric motorcycle company Alternet announced that it would be joining forces with Mitlin to power motorbikes for its ReVolt Electric Motorbikes subsidiary. Clearly, hemp is a valuable and versatile resource. As the crop is decriminalized, perhaps other companies will follow suit and help transition our planet to run on sustainable energy.
